Mrs. gbm and I have recently taken a liking to Malbecs.  Agrentine Malbecs in particular, but we're still experimenting and willing to try other regions.  I am curious to know what some of you consider worthwhile purchases.

Bodegas Septima from Argentina is a wonderful Malbec and at less than $10/btl, QPR can't be beat..

There are a few wineries here in WA state that are dabbling in Malbec.. One of the more successful so far is Camaraderie, although there are a few of the Walla Walla wineries (aMaurice, Walla Walla Vintners and Reininger to name a few) that are just starting Malbec and frankly are a bit disappointing so far...

Another of the WW vintners to successfully produce a Malbec was Dusted Valley, although at better than $30/bottle, that's cutting it close on QPR...

Still it was one of the better domestic Malbecs I've tasted, although when you can get an Argentinian Malbec for under $12/bottle, it's hard to "sell" domestic...

Kaiken (Argentina) makes a Malbec for @ $ 12 and a Malbec Ultra for @ $ 18 which is popular around my circle.
Here is the link for their vintages

2006 Vina Valdivieso Malbec - Here's my tasting note:

6/9/2008 rated 89 points: Good QPR. This is a fun wine. the nose is a bit hot, but after about 2 hours it's very nice... cassis, blueberries, and other dark fruit. A medium-full mouthfeel wth nice acidy and tannins that are a bit big now, but will allow this one to age nicely. taste of blackberries, blueberries and a touch of cigar. A fun wine. Very enjoyable

Personally, I am partial to the Malbec blends from the Cahors AOC in France.

Not sure where they come on value but looking through my notes Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena and Alta came up more than once with a couple of 90's and an 88

Was also impressed with 2006 Finca Sophenia Malbec Reserve but make sure it's the reserve.

Not shure if you can call $ 35.- a good QPR, and for me as a young winelover price is an even bigger issue.
But then again I am very sure about this wine... I remeber drinking it with my Girlfriend and a nice peace of Argentinian Rib-Eye... A fantastic combination!

I am more partial to the gamier Old World Malbec style of Cahors.  This one is usually a decent buy with consistent quality, never great, but always good.  It seems to show best about five years after release.

Thanks all (particularly Paul S for getting things going).

Looks like I will need to have a tasting after I track some of these down!

After all the suggestions, I walked into the local retailer without notes and picked two bottles of Argentine Malbec.  Drank this one tonight...

Luigi Bosca.  You can read my rather simple TN - it's the only one, and so take the score with a grain of salt.  This is what I am looking for in a Malbec, though maybe a bit on the expensive side at $20.

GREAT qpr on this one, the 2006 La Posta Malbec Angel Paulucci Vineyard...

http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=383859

90 points wine spectator, 90 points wine advocate, and I myself rated it 90... the CT average (16 notes) is 87.5.  You can find it for around $17-19 in any state with reasonable wine prices.  It's highly recommended by me, but make SURE you decant it either in a decanter for an hour or two, or just with the cork off for 5 or 6 hrs, to blow off the heat that comes right when you open the bottle.

This is good stuff.

I would second the Kaiken from above on the QPR front as well worth a try. I have had the '03/'04 in the past in recall them fondly, but haven't had one of the more recent vintages.

Also I would look at this one as well. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=498249  2007 Altos Las Hormigas Malbec

Mmmm, malbec.  If you like the modern, chocolatey ripe version, it's tough to beat the Kaiken (of Montes fame) and Both the regular and reserve Pascual Toso versions.  And Altos Los Hormigas.  The Tilia, a line from Catena, is a great fruit forward version in lines with the Aussie style.  Dona Paula and my favorite, Achavel Ferrer, make great wine with the grape that have a little more tannins and rustic feel.  And while the Catena is nice, the Catena Alta, at $40, is a great wine.  As is the Ferrer Quimera for the same price in most vintages,  2005 being the exception for me.  Then of course, there are the blends...
