Always with dinner, but I always do the tasting note bit before dinner, just to get a sense of the wine on its own. If the wine paired really well with dinner, I go back and make a note of it.

Very rarely I drink wine between meals. And then it's light stuff and often whites. But I usually open the wine while cooking, pouring some in a glass to sniff and drink and play with - as Niklas said, to get a feel of it on it's own.

Only at "real" tastings do I drink "heavy" wine with nothing, or perhaps some white bread.

With Food - could be dinner (most likely) or as paired with the appetizer or dessert.  Even if it is just a chaucerie plate later in the evening.

BBQ white or rose on a hot summer day - then I might drink without food.

Even at the wine tastings I've participated in - there is always some artisanal cheese and bread in sufficient quantities.

LOL...I should start writng my TN at the start of the meal and bottle and then just add an addendum as it changes - more likely to be "unbiased" at that time.

Wine IS food.

However, I answered "with small bites" because I had to include all the pre- and post-meal drinking!

Agree with the pre and post bits.  I might have a glass before dinner as an aperitif (at weekends), then the main wine with the meal which could continue after dinner.

Definitely mostly with food, although I don't get too cranky about food/wine pairings... The obvious no-no's of course I observe (don't drink red with an acidic salad dressing or heavy reds with fish, etc) but pretty much I enjoy whatever wine I want with whatever food makes sense.

Therein lies a difference in wine-making philosphy I think. Most of my friends who started new world started dirnking wines on their own, like spirits, but got converted to old world when they started pairing and found the joy of a good match. I find some Parker wines, for instance, completely impossible to pair. Last example was the Mollydooker Boxer 2005. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=238920 I really think that this is an inpossible wine to pair with a meal!

It really depends on the wine.

Reds - with meals
Whites - some with meals, some with snacks on a warm/hot day
Sparklin wines - with snacks 90% of the time

Here's what I say to the subject:

1. Just last month, together with my Girlfriend, I had a bottle of the famouse white Rothschild (Aile d'Argent)... and made this as a little "snack" on the side

http://picasaweb.google.com/mrkuendig/FoodWine/photo#5215954049150742818

2. Half a year ago I came back from Hungary and brought a fresh gooseliver and a Tokay Azu 5 Pouttonyos. I decided to make the gooseliver in the pan, and served it over caramelized apples. Promisse you... The Tokay can not be better then this - sorry no pics

3. When I come back from Alba's (Piemonte) Truffle Market this fall... I shall make a few Spaghettis with just a bit of white truffle on top of them, open a nice Barolo or Barbera to go with it - hmmmmm....  here's a pic from last year
http://picasaweb.google.com/mrkuendig/FoodWine/photo#5215957082261831202

... Drinking a nice wine with good food is always a very nice thing. My personal secret though... open a really good wine, just before you start cooking... and share it with your girlfriend or/and other good friends

What did Fred Astaire say back in his days:

Heaven... I'm in heaven...
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek...

I tend to agree with Fingers.  Your poll doesn't allow for "all of the above".

It's about 50/50 with my wife and I.  We usually start before a meal.  Sometimes with small bites, sometimes by itself... then with meal.  If there's any left in the bottle after the meal, it may be by itself again.

Anyway... I chose "small bites" above even though it tends to be centered around meals.

That's why the poll asks "MOST of your wine". I'm sure we all drink wine without food, with small bites, and with a meal. But when is the majority of your wine consumed?
If there was a D) All of the above- everyone would choose D.

As Paul S referred to-"Therein lies a difference in wine-making philosphy I think. Most of my friends who started new world started dirnking wines on their own, like spirits, but got converted to old world when they started pairing and found the joy of a good match."

I thought it would be interesting, as there are more experienced wine drinkers on CT, what the poll would show. So far, it shows more CT users consume MOST of their wine with a full meal.(At least the ones who visit the forum).

Unlike me, I chose small bites of food also.

Not to nitpick, but MOST and Majority have two different meanings. "Majority" (usually simple majority) commonly means "more than 50%" (51% would fit),  while "most" could imply anything from "more than the other choices" to the "most of the time" or "vast majority"

OK.  I guess I'm nitpicking, but part of my job is to design survey questions.

None of the available choices fit my usage.  I agree that "all of the above" wouldn't work well, but something like "each equally" would.

Ditto.

The bottle of the evening is always selected based upon what's for dinner.  I usually only drink a glass with dinner, and have another one or two glasses afterwards.

Ditto again.
Except for the odd night when we have some people over and open up a handfull of bottles.  In this case, we have fresh bread and some light snacks.

I have found that some wines are either way and some are definitely better with little food and some are better with big food.  In the hot summer afternoon I like to mix Zardetto Prosecco with some white peach puree and enjoy a bellini with strawberries and cream.  I hosted an Italian wine tasting where one of the wines we served was Masi Costasera Amarone with walnuts and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.  Of all the pairings I've tasted, I recommend this one above all.  For a big pairing, a great steak is brought to a higher level with a Stags' Leap Winery Petit Sirah or a  Brunello di Montalcino such as Banfi Poggio Alle Mura.  A cedar plank grilled salmon really ges well with a Pinot Noir such as Ken Wright's Carter Vineyard.  I like to open a small bottle of Sauterne such as Doisy-Vedrines or Suduiraut and serve it with fois gras.  I try to always serve the wine that goes best with a paricular dish and also to serve the dish that goes best with a particular wine.  I've found that the results are worth the research.

Of course wine with food but not just any wine. I opened a '05 Neyers Pato Zin and couldn't quite figure out what to do with it - very big and rich, low in acid and almost sweet. It didn't work with anything on the table and is now in the fridge waiting for its moment to shine. May never see the light of day. Also had a Chianti Classico open so the meal was complete.

On a hot day my wife enjoys crisp white, mostly pinot gris, when gardening. Not my practice, but I can't argue with the combination.

There should have been indeed a D as for all the above, but as for my actual consumption practices, pls. be informed about my weekly routine, usually followed to the point (unless some unexcpected irregularity prevents me from it)

Friday:

2-3 Gin & Tonics (Bombay Sapphire, tonic water, slice of lime, ice cubs made from tonic water) enjoyed with pistacchio nuts, a classic combination and an essential means for recovering from a hard week at work.

Optional: wine with snacks (e.g. an italian red with parmiggiano, etc.or an easy-drinking new world red, such as carmenere - Misinones de Rengo Reserva is a good one for this)

Celebrational option: Champagne (e.g. with freshly salted salmon, or with a surprisingly good match: popcorn)

Saturday:

Close to dinner time: A glass of sherry OR campari OR dry martini (during winter time) OR  G&T as an aperitif
(open a bottle of wine to for breathing 2-3 hourse prior to dinner - taste if OK)
Cook dinner. Sip & taste occasionally the dinner wine.
Dinner is based on what's the outcome of the visit to our supermarket - lamb/beef/salmon/whitefish. Usually we prefer simple and "easy" dishes from good ingredients, and wine is always decided on the day based on what's for dinner.

Sunday: A glass of wine with dinner, usually no more.

Monday-Thursday: An occasional bottle may be opened and a glass of wine is enjoyed along with a good show on TV. My wife usually has a glass of wine, I may choose a whiskey as well.

So all in all, consumption of wine is 1-2 bottles per week and predominantly with food as a part of a meal. I wouldn't mind at all having some nice, crispy white as an aperitif either, but when only two people are drinking the wine, then a bottle of white first and a bottle of red for dinner is a bit heavy...considering that I usually like to have a small grappa or brandy as desert....

During vacation time: Everyday is a saturday...

Oh, why such a strict regime schedule-wise? For some reason even 1-2 glasses of wine in the evening disturbs my sleep .

Nice variation.

Just need to add the ocassional Margarita:
1 part lime
2 parts triple sec (or Cointreau)
4 parts tequila (I prefer clear)
salt around the edge of the glass
must be cold (put it in the freezer to avoid dilution with ice cubes.

Don't drive after a few of these.
