Hi there, I've received a couple of comments that I am posting spam. I honestly thought this forum was for anything about wine that we found interesting. Yes, I do have links to my website that sells wine online, and maybe this is where the spam comes in. I apologize if I have pissed anyone off. I am new to the blog thing and am only trying to share my passion with other people that may have the same passion for wine. Sorry.

Technically speaking, it's not spam.  It's guerilla marketing.

Amy, you are certainly welcome to our humble forum but as you peruse the threads, you'll notice that there is no corporate promotion going on.  Yes, word of mouth recommendations and personal inquiry that may lead to an occasional sale or exchange do happen, but for the most part we are just discussing the subject - not seeking any financial gain.

So feel free to inform and enlighten and inquire.  Just beware of the unexpected when it comes to Serge, as you can already see.

Welcome,

Bob

Some forums are tolerant of commercial posts, others are not.  This one is pretty much non-commercial, non-political, non-controversial.  Like a group of friends and aquaintences sitting down to share some good wine - no sales pitch, just some nice (wine-related) conversation.

Wanna see the pictures from Republican Convention in New York City when hookers stripped naked in front of the Madison Square Garden?

I think I covered all 3 "non" in just one sentence
;)

I have no problems if you want to start your own thread and have links to your website there.  Just don't spam other threads.  Maybe title you thread commercial or marketing- then other users can decided if they want to view your thread or not.  That is my 2 cents and I'm still pretty new to this forum- less than 5 months and don't fully know all the ins and outs- what is acceptable and what is not.

What do other users think?

Should links to commercial websites not be allowed in these forums?  Eric?  Should there be a forum for commercial posts?  I would be interested every so often to see marketing/ commercial posts of wines sales or deals (only wine related, none of that take these pills and make your "johnson" bigger or lose 50lbs over night bs)- but maybe this isn't the place for it.

I mentioned this issue to Eric in the CT Support forum and recommended that maybe he create another forum "category" for vendors and individuals alike who wish to buy, sell, trade, or otherwise post about deals or promotions on wine.  I thought it would be a good compromise, so that we wouldn't be inundated with this sort of marketing on the General Discussion forum, but yet people could go to that forum to seek the information out if they so desire.

My biggest issue with these kinds of posts is that if one person does it...it's only a matter of time before more and more people are taking advantage of the open-ness of this site to hawk their wares.  It just seems like a slippery slope to me, and I think it would ruin what is a really great site for people who wish to share their passion for wine, with out the constant bombardment that I am sure most of us already get from being on wine shop mailing lists or in wine clubs.

Plus I just had a bit of a problem with the blatant misuse of the forum.  I know Eric has worked hard on this and the Main CT site, and, to me, if you are going to advertise and make money by posting on this site, you should be paying for the privilege to do so.

Call me paranoid or overprotective...but I like our little community here and I would hate to see it change into a something overly commercial and impersonal.

My 2 cents anyway...

I personally think that perhaps a new Forum should be created for those who want to list wines for sale, commercial or private. I know the WS site has this, and I've heard RP does too though haven't really looked at either.

I personally wouldn't mind knowing if a fellow collector was looking to thin out their collection and CT gives a great way to browse ones cellar. I have already engaged with fellow Trackers to share allocations on mailing lists. I think in my time to date, these posts have not been intrusive as the general mechanics behind them are usually handled by Private messages and off board emails.

But to keep things genuine and non-solicitation based, perhaps a separate Forum for these posts is more appropriate than the General Discussion Forum.

Indeed, and we all have enough advertising in our lives.

Speaking of which, was there an interest in the '06 Cayuse?

WineCellar,
It would be very interesting to hear stories about your life as a wine merchant, which is one aspect of this hobby just as much as any other aspect. The trick is to balance it so that you don't come across as somebody just trying to sell your wares on us (which by the way many of us can't buy anyway). There is no need to keep it secret that you sell wine! I have seen vendors on other discussion forums doing the balancing act very well, and it looks like fun. You are welcome to post here!
/Niklas
