Two independent wine retailers publiced new prices on their 2004 1. growths this week.

Mouton Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Latour and Lafite Rothschild all had their price lowered from around dkk. 5000,-/bottle to dkk. 1200-1500,-/bottle. (Ca. 800 UDS to 220 USD).

It's still too rich for my blood - but if this is a continueing development, it'll trickle down to the other crus putting some pressure on insane bordeaux prices. Perhaps three consecutive "classic" years has put pressure on the great chateaux.

I'll be following this development.

800 seems like a lot for 04s.  I have an 04 Haut Brion that I back in March for $175 USD.

As the world economy goes into the crapper, I have been curious about changing prices (decreases) for more expensive wines, particularly classifiend growth Bordeaux. I suspect that we will see declines, particularly in sales prices for older vintages (i.e., vintages before the crazy rise in prices). For example, I just bought a few '99 Pichon-Baron for $45 (USD) each. My guess is that this is below what the wine would have cost 6 months ago, Merchants will have to decide if they want to make less money for the newer vintages that they bought at inflated prices. I suspect they will -- the mark-ups are pretty big. Moreover, I suspect that '04 was the last "reasonably" priced vintage in Bordeaux, and that the high prices these wines have been commanding represent merchants' desire to make more money. Some would use the word greed. To me, it's just business. If people will pay it, why not charge it?

Absolutely.  I've been in so many discussions about pricing and this is what I always say.  Sure some people will complain about pricing but if someone will pay for it, then why not charge it?

Was looking through prices over the weekend (using Farr/BBR in the UK and winesearcher) and noticed that the 01 Yquem seems to have dropped a lot from its high but not much movement on the reds.  So they stopped rising, I guess as demand falls so will the prices.

I've also been getting a lot more sales calls and e-mails.

'04 Grand Crus never went above $200 a bottle on release. Whoever says it went from $800 a bottle to $220 is just pulling your leg. BTW, prices in Copenhagen were very much similar to prices in USA the last time I was there a year ago.

What else did you find out about prices.  You may save me some work.

PS  I've also noticed an increase in e-mails from sellers ;)

Well, I just looked into what other retailers charge and found these prices (dkk. ca. 5.50 dkk to 1 usd):

Lafite Rothschild 2004: 2500,-
Latour 2004: 3500,-
Mouton Rothschild 2004: 4500,-
Haut Brion 2004: 2500,-

It seems that prices are at least halved. And any 2004 1. cru in Denmark at 200 USD (around dkk. 1100,-) would be a bargain. I don't remember release prices on 1. cru 2004 in Denmark.

I was only checking half a dozen wines against my personal valuation (I've used Farr where available - broader selection and less price inflation) and winebid and they were all pretty much as before, except the Yquem.

There was also good availability - another sign of a drop in demand?

Update

Now Mouton R. 2000 (!) is on sale for dkk. 2500,- (ca. 450 $US). Looking on Wine-Bid's records for this wine it's now double that price on auctions. And this is a retailer! It also seems to be on par with the CT-community average.

There's only one retailer that has this offering though, and only Mouton.

Looking at their other discounts, the 1. growths 2005 seems to be sold a few hundred dollars under primeur-prices but nowhere near the Mouton's.

I concur ... I have seen a tremendous increase (300%) in e-mails, phone calls, and direct mailings from sellers.
If we can all hold out from caving in for 6 months or so, maybe as a group we can continue to drive prices down?

TC
