As the world economy goes into the crapper, I have been curious about changing prices (decreases) for more expensive wines, particularly classifiend growth Bordeaux. I suspect that we will see declines, particularly in sales prices for older vintages (i.e., vintages before the crazy rise in prices). For example, I just bought a few '99 Pichon-Baron for $45 (USD) each. My guess is that this is below what the wine would have cost 6 months ago, Merchants will have to decide if they want to make less money for the newer vintages that they bought at inflated prices. I suspect they will -- the mark-ups are pretty big. Moreover, I suspect that '04 was the last "reasonably" priced vintage in Bordeaux, and that the high prices these wines have been commanding represent merchants' desire to make more money. Some would use the word greed. To me, it's just business. If people will pay it, why not charge it?
