I'm curious if there is a trend of CT users dropping paid professional review that are not automatically linked to CT and if so, why?

I find cutting and pasting WA/WS review to be too tedious, especially when a large number (over 10%) of my wines are erroneously marked as having professional reviews, but in fact do not.  I’m just tired of f**king with this.

Maybe I need to switch to only integrated professional reviews, although Robert Parker’s opinion moves the market more than any other professional reviewer.

I have been toying with the idea of cancelling all my paid subscriptions and relying entirely on CT content -- although so far I have decided I am not quite ready for that. But I believe the day will come.

For the time being I keep sending Bob and WS a check every year... But their business case is getting thiner and thiner, as CT content continues to evolve.

Being relatively new to wine, and also viewing the reviews of experts with a pinch of salt (comes from the job), I wouldn't even consider paying for reviews, especially with CT sitting here for free! I do subscribe to a wine magazine here in Finland, but that's mainly to read the articles about different wine regions. I guess if you are interested in investing in wines, pro reviews are crucial, but I just drink what I buy (it's even illegal for me to resell my wines in this glorious country!).

I too pay for WS and RP.  Each has something different to offer and depending on the variety and region, I prefer one over the other.

The advantage cellar tracker has, and it has been stated many times before, is that the reviews are usually based on actually DRINKING (not just tastng ) the entire bottle and most include the meal they had the wine with.  Since that is usually how I drink my wine, as long as there are enough reviews - I tend to favor CT over the other two.

BUT - it is very frustrating see a wine marked as having a professional review, and then clicking throughto find it was the wrong vintage or no review at all.

The one advantage cutting and pasting DOES have for me - is that when I am searching for a wine I don't already own - if I see the WS or RP review (the cut & Pasted text) already present - means I have usually searched for the wine before and decided not to purchase it.

While I agree that it is tedious to enter the professional reviews, I still do it for WS and WA and even Wine Enthusiast sometimes.  For me it's all part of the "addicted to CT" sickness.    I do like the integrated IWC stuff.

I just spent a week updating my WA and WS reviews that had new 2nd, 3rd or even 4th  updated reviews.  This really took a long time to check every wine (362) out and was very painful.

IWC is just so muck nicer and not time consuming at all.

5 days ago I cancelled my WS subscription after 2 years being their subscriber. I had such feeling that they haven't even seen half of wines they are describing. Computer-reviewer could do better. Since I buy wines only twice in year - in spring and autumn when isn't too hot or too cold for shipping - I will buy 1-month WA subscriptions twice per year + I have subscription to Decanter magazine where tastings aren't one-man-shows. And, of course, CT will be my adviser number one!

I have also been tempted to cancel my WS subscription.  In fact I think I will do that right now since it is up for renewal at the end of this month.

I will never get it....why would anybody need a professional review on anything but futures?

I once asked myself:
how will my drinking/buying habits change if ALL wine reviewers close their publications?

The answer is very predicatable and most of you can guessit.

If your not interested in rare wine, investing, futures or highly allocated wines and don't want any guidance in finding great wines, you don't need professioan reviews.

As CT gets more users and more user reviews, it only gets better and more thorough and as Smahk pointed out, the CT reviews are mainly based on drinking the wine not just tasting it...

I like WS as I'm still new to the wine hobby, so it's fun to read the articles and reviews but like movie reviewers, I don't put much stock in the reviewer's opinion because it's pretty much that; their opinion.  I've also found it to be a fairly good source of what's coming up, however now that I'm hooked on this dang forum, I'll likely be using it as more of "the source of all wine knowledge" going forward!

Thinking about wine only as about trading subject is in my opinion biggest evil and blasphemy thus shaming the "liquid poetry".

I've never sold a bottle of wine, but I have a number of wines that have gone up in price by several hundred percent and maybe at some point, I'll sell to people who appreciate it more than me.

I don't understand. Apple stock? I don't own any anymore unless they're in my mutual funds.   But had a good run in the past..

I rely on professional reviewers when I am considering purchases of wine from new vintages and/or producers unfamiliar to me.  I rarely purchase older wines (too much risk).  So, for me, CT and professional reviewers serve very different purposes.  I read reviews on CT of wines in my cellar that I am thinking of drinking to get relevant, current information.

That said, I have found that my tastes have diverged from those of professional reviews I trusted in the past.  For example, I was a regular subscriber to RP for many years but I cancelled my subscription early this year.  I found myself puzzled when tasting many wines he raved about and was equally puzzled when I enjoyed wines that he didn't.  Obviously, for me, his publication was no longer worth my money.  On the other hand, I found that the CT link to IWC showed my tastes and his to be more on par.  Equally so for Allen Meadows.

So yes, I have dropped some professional review subscriptions but I have picked up others, all thanks to CT.

Tom
