2001 Schwarz Zweigelt 'W' Red Table Wine (Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee)

7/19/2008: This is what I call "Living dangerously", not every day one runs into Zweigelt grape. I checked the bottom shelf at the store, right at the floor and lo and behold - I thought I recognized the label of the wine we had in restaurant in Austria in 2004. Still some oak present and in the blind tasting I'd guess this one as CdP. I bought two more bottles. I don't like CdP that much but..what is the Jewish dilemma?
- Ham on sale.
and the wine is discounted heavily as there are only 3 bottles were left.

I have enjoyed my only zweigelt a lot (2004 Heidi Schröck Zweigelt) (sorry I didn't leave a note yet, I have 2 more chances in my cellar), an appropriately light and tart fooddie wine.  I have to admit I did not feel even a twinge of Jewish guilt (well, until you brought it up), perhaps because the winemaker's name is Heidi...

:-)

Steve, did you have the feeling the wine was similar to CdP in any way?

My zweigelt was very light, in that sense I would say not.  However, the flavor profile was not too dissimilar to a grenache-oreinted CdP, albeit I try not to drink them quite so young.

The one I had today has good structure and can probably age for some considerable time. I'll throw it in the offsite storage and see how it goes 5-10 years from now.
