What wine do you recommend for the typical 4th of July BBQ with hamburgers, hot dogs, maybe chicken.  I am thinking Pinot Noir, Chard, and Chianti Classico.

My opinion (pairing suggestions):

Fireworks - Australian Fruit Bomb - Any Shiraz recommended by Parker

Meats coated with BBQ sauce - Zins, Aus. Shiraz, CA Syrah, CdR.  Chianti and Barbera go better with tomato based sauces.

Grilled Veggies and Shrimp and tomatos - Sauv blanc, semillon

Grilled Spicy food  - Off-Dry Rieslings and Gewurz

Grilled burgers and Steak - Cab, Bordeaux, Dry Zin (Ridge Lytton Springs style)

Dry Rose goes with most everything grilled

Of course, beer goes great with BBQ

edit:  I almost forgot hot dogs... Reisling, of course.  Also, Sausages go great with CdR!

Check out this earlier thread.  I like the Viognier idea

Maybe not chic, but don't forget a good Merlot!

Hamburgers: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Syrah (check out Foppiano!)  Chianti??? No...
Chicken:  Any decent white wine or Pinot (but don't forget Petit Syrah) and roses absolutely.  I must respectfully disagree about Gewirtz; way too tricky to pair for uninitiated guests.

Taking from the other thread - Gruner Veltliner may be a good choice. Absolute no brainer that goes nicely with most foods. CdPs would go nicely with the burgers. You might want a bigger, more tannic Pinot. Probably a Pommard or NSG if your are looking at Burgs, or a Central Otago if you are looking new world.

Nothing better than good German sausages on the grill with  mustard and a trocken or kabinett level German (or Alsatian for that matter) Riesling.  I'd bring home sausages from Karl's every week if my wife would let me

We're doing Cab Franc with BBQed pork ribs...

Also starting with raspberry martinis with blueberries.

OK, so here's my menu for July 5 (moved by one day because of predicted MASSIVE traffic on LI)

Whisky Brined Pork Chops with homemade apple sauce + mango chutney (two condiments)
French potato salad (no mayo, basically a mustard/vinegar infusion)
Homemade strawberry ice cream

I'm thinking a white Rhone.  Thoughts?
