It may be cold, grey, wet and overcrowded, but one of the very few (if only) pleasures of living in London is The Sampler, a wine bar that does tastings of iconic wines - you only pay for the exact amount you put in your glass.

See below for the latest mouth watering menu.  I might pop over this weekend.

How big are the samples?

I think I would have to jump at the DRC for ~$40US.  I paid $30 US for a 2oz 2004 Opus One tasting at the winery once, which wasn't worth it (which was probably more due to the wine's youth), but it would likely be the only chance I would ever have to drink the DRC, so I'd have to go for it.

Genius idea.  Wish there were more shops like this.

I think 30ml - pretty small - but you can serve yourself more and you pay for what you use.  The bottles are sealed with nitrogeon and use various pumps etc.

Bloody hell, my old stamping ground - now all I need is an Arsenal game at home next time I'm over and I'm in heaven.

Paul - meet you there in Nov?

Is this similar to the bar in Selfridges but at a higher price?

Selfridges had to close their bar.  Westminster city council insisted on wine being sold in 125ml measures minimum.

Islington belongs to another council who did not object, so hence you can serve smaller glasses.

Wrighty - we can definately meet there at some point.  I used to work around there as well.   It played hell with my finances.

cgrimes pops over to Islington from time to time to take in a Gooners game and some wines.

Are you guys talking about me?  Yes I am a Gooner, and yes, I try to get over when I can to catch a match (last one Valentine's Day 2006 at Highbury against Crystal Palace).  Doubt I'll get over this season, though, as 1) already went to London this year (wife jealous), 2) went to Seattle for the CT Event (wife pissed), 3) wife going to Paris for her 40th, and 4) the whole world is going down the tubes (I estimate that if nothing else I have at least 3 yrs supply of wine in my cellar).

BTW, what a great idea for wine tasting!  When I get back over there it will be a must event!

One loss doesn't end a season (only in the eyes of the papers maybe).  Man Utd are worse off but have exactly the same record as last year and went on to win the league.

Now, if I was a Tottenham fan I'd be worried Colonel.

Touché
Sadly got to watch the first half of both matches (TV).
So didn't get to see the Gunners let in a goal, but did see the Spurs start on down the slippery slope.
Luckily I can find other teams to support -
Come on you Giants (New York/Jersey that is)!

My next scheduled trip to London in in June 2009. May not be so grey and wintry then, but I would be glad to meet up then :)   AND drink some good wine of course!

We have a shop like the in Singapore that used to serve pretty decent wines (e.g. Pontet Canet 1996, Calon Segur 2000, Drouhin Puligny Montrachet Folatieres 2005) and one or two top notch ones (e.g. Vega Sicilia Unico 1996). Pretty fair prices too. Somehow, the idea did not quite take off, and they have replaced the good stuff with more plonkish nonsense (e.g. Clos du Marquis 2004)

Sh1t.  You must have some seriously expensive tastes if you think Clos du Marquis is plonk.

You are buying when you come to London - Wrighty, myself and The Colonel will help you through some wine that is more to your liking - maybe a 1900 Margaux?

Make it from 20th June onwards and it's a date.
Also as it's my birthday later in the month I'll find something suitable to open.

What about 2000 Clos du Marquis vs Leoville Las Cases.
There should be a difference shouldn't there?
That should be worth the trip.

Sounds great.  Do you want some white zinfandel to start with?  Maybe some Yellowtail as well?  Lambrusco?

Count me in.

Definitely not the Lambrusco, accidentally bought a sparkling version in Milan.
Just think fizzy Ribena, but much worse.
I thought you'd at least chip in an Almaviva (hint I haven't got 2006).

Okay, deal.   I'll do the Almaviva - I have a '99 stashed away somewhere.

Haha - great, looks like I will have to grab something on the way down to contribute as well. I will let you know my travelling schedule by first quarter 2009.

By the way, I am also planning a trip to Burgundy and Southern Rhone around that time. Anyone interested?

Oh yes.  We could travel in a really small car like the guys from Wayne's World listening to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Now if you go to Burgundy first we can all help you taste your new acquisitions!
May need a few days as a few themes are emerging:
1.  Chateaux and their second wines (Las Cases and Clos du Marquis)
2.  New World joint ventures (Almaviva 1997-2006)
3.  Maestro's class on the best of Italy (he doesn't know about this yet)
4.  Paul S collection from Beaune to Rhone
5.  Paul J provides the music (I'd rather have Bohemian Rhapsody than a Lambrusco* honest).
6.  Wrighty is in charge of team strip - any colour but red is acceptable.

L.

*  now I'm going too hear there are some good ones I expect?

Colonel - I did used to be a house music DJ so I can provide hard, pumping house music only.
I will need space for my decks.

One of the biggest dissapointments of my life in recent times was when I first went to Italy for a gastronomical tour around Piedmont.  We stopped off in Modena at a fantastic restaurant and the owner of the restaurant insisted on serving the best local wine which was Lambrusco.   I was gutted - I was expecting some gorgeous, earthy aged Barolo.

I felt like I was in a cheap pub in south London.
