OK...so I saw this article about the price of tickets to see Obama's inauguration in January going for 5 figures in some cases.  So it got me thinking.

Would I choose to pay for the unique experience of seeing America's first African American President sworn into office....or the unique experience of purchasing and drinking something from a fantastic vintage, such as this (let's not get caught up on the producer, I know some of you have your opinions), on January 20th in celebration of this historical event?

I say the inauguration.  While some say history repeats itself, something like this only happens once in a lifetime.  There are always going to be great wines and great vintages (I hope anyway).

Thoughts....

I'll watch it on TV, probably from the room in Las Vegas. I guess I am not very sentimental.

Best idea.

If all prior Presidents had been African, would he not be the first Caucasian?

It is a proud and historic moment, but nonetheless I think that everyone of mixed-race heritage is being slighted by the proclamation.  Perhaps we can all now be just called Americans.

buy the wine and watch on TV ... wife and I popped some bubbly and took a picture of ourselves with Obama on the TV right behind us.  We got a perfect pic!  Perhaps I'll go home tonight and get her to download the photo ... then, if I figure out how to post pic, I'll do just that.

In twenty years when perhaps there will be another or several African American Presidents, would you rather tell people the story of;

"I was there when the first African American President was sworn into office".

or

"I drank a 1945 Mouton while watching the first African American President being sworn into office".

Agreed, that was my feeble attempt at being politically correct.  Something that I am not used to being in my everyday life.

We are all Americans in my opinion as well.  I personally despise the precursor used when describing "Blank" Americans.  I think it has only worked to keep us divided.

I was watching the comedian Ralphie May last night and he was talking about  this exact issue.  He said he took a trip he took to Iraq a few years back and he realized that the people who were shooting at them and trying to kill them weren't trying to kill any "blank"-Americans, they were just trying to kill Americans.  So why should we see ourselves as any different?

Good point...

See, everyone on this site would find the latter a more fascinating story (me included), but I still see the first as being so much more historically significant.

I dunno, I think it is just the history geek coming out of me.  I have always been fascinated by the thought of the "historical event" and what makes it such.  So to witness one first hand intrigues me.

In the second scenario you have two stories to tell.

A fair point...and how much can you really say about being there?  It was cold...and crowded...and I couldn't really see him up there anyway.

As opposed to the description of the Mouton...

It was cold, crowded and someone bumped me and knocked my 12000 dollar bottle of wine on the ground and broke it.  I should have stayed home and watched on TV.

Well now that would be the most ideal situation wouldn't it?  Besides the bottle breaking on the ground bit.

It's the best of both worlds

Instead of the 1945, why not buy a case of 1982 and have a party! If I am invited, for years to come I am sure I will be talking more about how generous you are than talking about a presidencial inauguration.

Brilliant!

I like your thinking.  Although....hard to pass on that '45.  What are 61's going for?  Perhaps we get a lesser 45, a 61, and an 82 and have a flight of "super" vintages.  I'd say let's add an 05 in there as well, but that would be infanticide.

Although...it may speak to Obama's hope for a bright future. A metaphor, so to speak, of where we have been and where we are going.

I've always had a respect for that 1945 Mouton being a bit of a WWII history buff, I think it would be an awesome way to celebrate. I personally would just fight the crowds to get the best view I could and then enjoy the wine later that eve in a quite setting.

You could also ask your congressman if his office has a window view of the inauguration, and offer to share a glass in his office so you don't have to fight the crowds, though I'm guessing the secret service would probably ruin that plan.

Here's an idea:  Buy instead the '64 Mouton (the year of the Civil Rights Act), drink it on the streets of DC out of the bottle, and experience what a true 55 pt wine tastes like (I just checked eBob, it really is).  That would probably make for 4 stories.

I would choose inauguration. Here, where I am living (see left), I have opportunity to see black man only once in several years.

Also I wouldn't recommend to any black man to visit my country, unless he/she wants to become a superstar. Everybody (guaranteed outside the capital city) will look on him/her, children will point with fingers, probably, shouting: "Mom, dad, watch, nigger is coming!" The word "nigger" in our language is the only word how to name the black man and hasn't any negative meaning. Perhaps, you are thinking now that we are racists. Not at all! These shouts described above are shouts of pure excitement. Imagine your reaction if you would meet alien from Mars. Of course, we, white men, can test this on our own skin - by going to some central African country

It's good when people are positively excited by differences.
I had a similar experience to the one you describe in rural Korea - they obviously hadn't seen too many people looking like me or my family: little kids followed  us around wanting us to sign their arms.
It was just like being a superstar, hope Barack enjoys it.

Not sure I get paying so much to be at just to say I was there, understand the historical moment and all that but apart from the t-shirt saying I was there and the boasting rights would there be any benefit over seeing it on tele (I can understand being at a sporting event, it's different live)?  Therefore based on the choose for the money it would have to be the Mouton although I like the idea of a 1982 party, especially if it's period costume!

I find this very interesting indeed.  I had to study a lot about your area of the world (more specifically Riga) when I was in the military.  It's quite an interesting place you live in, that's for sure.
