Right now I have a free night in Paris next Tuesday. I'm taking recommendations on restaurants and if anyone wants to join me just let me know.

Let's just say if my wife was with me it wouldn't be an object but since I'm on my own I have to ask...how much?

100 Euros should do it but....don't go there by yourself. The athmosphere is half of the pleasure and knowing the history of the place you might feel lonely there.

Serge:
I will be in Paris mid October and Restaurant Laperouse sounds wonderful.

Have you allowed the sommelier to choose your wines or have you selected your own?

Just curious, as it seems mostly when we have wines selected for us by the sommelier they are outstanding - something we would have never chosen, or haven't heard of.  Other times it feels as though they are bringing wines that just haven't been moving - sort of an inventory reduction (although not price) on my dime.

Thoughts?

I didn't try to ask Sommelier for advice, as the wine list is rather large and has names like Petrus on it as well.
If I can't chose the wine based on everything I learned on wine boards and tastings,
than I just wasted few years of my life
:)

The place is not shy about the prices,
so I was careful not to leave my first born college fund there, as we celebrated our friend's birthday.
:)

True...But I always guess that I don't know near enough.  I usually tell the Sommelier that I enjoy a specific wine on the list - and what else does he have like that (ie kind and price) that would be new to me.  Most times I am pleasantly surprised.

It does seem like the small sampling I saw online was quite pricey - no need to leave 200+ euros on a sommeliers recommendation!  (And I won't even talk about the exchange rate.)

Just out of curiousity, what time did you sit for dinner?  My North American instincts tell me I might be sleeping by the end of the meal if I have a reservation for 9 PM - but my european experience tells me that around 10:30 most "locals" will head out.

I am an early eater...6-7 is my best time.

is not the place to find new goodies...not at those prices!

Honestly, I don't recall what we drank, but I'll never forget the food and overall experience.
