So after a day of wine and turkey my family and I went wine tasting in Paso.  Ended up going to 5 wineries and 1 the following day.
Started out at Whalebone- was really interested to try this winery, but was a little disappointed upon tastings.  This is a mostly Paso Cab winery.  The 03 Cab was good- everything else was medicore and not ready.  They also do a interesting wine called the Bob wine- which is Cab, with some Syrah and Zin.
After that we went to Tolo- Rhone style wines with a Cab and a Zin.  Good wine with small bites to go along with the wine.  The stand alone Syrah was a little over oaked.
After Tolo went to Jada- decent wines that are way overpriced.  They match cheeses with their wines here.  Interesting wine names as well.  Winery is owned by some heart Dr. in Florida.  The tasting room is very nice here and I think the owner is trying to make up the cost of the tasting room by way over charging the wine.  $20-30 dollar wines are $35-50 dollars here.
After Jada went to lunch at Eagle Castle- poor wines but good food.  One of the few places that serve lunch.  Get food to go and take it elsewhere.  The Syrah was not that bad.  Actaully we had the most fun here as our party of 9 was seated at the "Kings" library table for lunch and tastings.
We finished off tastings at Four Vines.  One of my favorite wineries.  Good Zins and red blends.
The next day my girlfriend and I went to Calcareous- my current favorite winery in Paso and we are wine club members as well.  The winery also has best views of any winery in Paso.  Great Reds- everything is good and the best QPR I have found.  Ran out of time for Lone Madrone- next time-will be back in Paso around X-mas.

At dinner at Artisan tried a Jacob Toft wine- 2004 Mary Jane's Cuvee.  A Syrah blend with Syrah grapes from Booker and also Grenache and Mourvedre from the James Berry vineyard (of Villa Creek & Saxum fame).  Wine was only $56 a bottle and I thought a steal at that price.  Needs air/time to open up though.

I have asked the question before, but what is your favorite winery in Paso (other than Turley and Justin- I hear them all too often)?

Pretty much have only done Saxum in Paso area, but have been wanting to expand my knowledge of the area. I've had a good Syrah from Santa Ynez from Koehler.

I am dying to visit my friend who just moved to Arroyo Grande to do the winery touring as I'm sure there is a lot of stuff off my radar. Love the comment about going to a winery and getting take out, skip their wines...ouch!

We ate there, but recommend taking out.  Nothing special in the way of wines, but food was good.  Life is too short to drink bad wine... haha.  My dad is retired from is 9-5 job and now reps a couple different wineries in the area- one of his wineries sell a wine to Eagle Castle and they just re-label the bottle.

Oh yeah, also came back with 25 bottles of wine (24 from the Paso region 1 not- 04 Prisoner from Wades Wines).  Stopped off at Wades Wine in Thousand Oaks area on the way up to the Central Coast from the OC.  Great little wine shop with an awesome selection- bought 4 bottles drank 3 while in SLO/Paso.

vinopkm,

I hadn't known that Jacob Toft uses grapes from such high-quality vineyards.  I'll have to seek them out next time I'm up in Paso. ... I haven't tried-out Calcerous yet, either, and you're comments aren't the first good ones I've heard, so perhaps it's time I give them a visit as well.  Some of my favorite Paso wineries include:

Denner
Summerwood
Dover Canyon
Tablas Creek
Lone Madrone
Villa Creek
Graves

Could be because the owner is a fellow Cal Poly SLO grad - but Chumeia is my favortie Paso winery.

Has anyone been to the "Hospice du Rhone" festival in May?
I have contemplated this for several years, but always ended up with a conflicting Cardiology meeting ... which I am not going to attend this year.
The event looks like a good time.

I'm lucky enough to live in Paso Robles and here are some of my favorites:

Le Cuvier for big bold wines that are best aged a long time, Halter Ranch and Tablas Creek for Rhone blends, Anglim for Viognier and especially their lovely Grenache, Silver Stone, Villa Creek, Nadeau zins. Pipestone, Villacana, Dunning and Hug have also made some very good wines. These are all west side wines. Hope that helps when you visit!

I went just short of Le Cuvier last time... went to Tolo.  Halter Ranch is good as well.  I make quarterly visits to Paso Robles it is good to hear suggestions like Le Cuvier and Anglim for places to try next time in the region.  Both my parents and my girlfriend's parents live in the area.

The Tolo winemaker got his start at Le Cuvier, and you can tell the influence. It is such a nice drive out there too! It's also fun to stay in town and walk around to the downtown tasting rooms - Anglim, and Silver Stone are my faves, but Edward Sellers is also good and Arroyo Robles is OK too. There are also a couple good wine stores in the area - Wine Attic right downtown, and 15 Degrees in Templeton next door to Trader Joe's.

I've got two bottles of 1999 Le Cuvíer Zinfandel still on the shelf.

Looking forward to the day we dig into those.

And a welcome to the Forum, Kermadur! I'm a relative newbie as well.

Are you familiar with the Christian Lazo winery?

Thanks for the welcome! I know the name Christian Lazo, but have never visited nor had the wine. Is it in San Miguel?

Yes. Here is a link to Christian Lazo.

Ran into one of the owners as a Paso Robles tasting here in Kansas City. Really nice wines, and one of the fifty or so represented which really stood out to me. A nice earthiness to the wines.

Of course, none of their product is available to me here in Missouri. I'm hoping a distributor will pick them up before too long, as ordering wine just gets insane in terms of the shipping cost (at least to me).
