By popular demand, this is a thread to help compile a VOLUNTARY, preliminary list of some of the featured wines for the events in September.  I will be keeping track of the bottles for organizational purposes so please try to keep this thread clear of  lengthy commentary.

On the evening of the events please bring an index card with information about your chosen wine and your name/handle for the purposes of making a public list of the featured wines for the forum.

For what it's worth, I am likely to bring:
1. L. Latour Corton Charlemagne '01 (Fri)
2. Leoville Las Cases '94 (Sat)
3. Baumard Clos Ste. Catherine '01 or '05 (Sat)

Looking forward to seeing your various contributions and seeing you in September.
Craig

I want to bring wines that are not typically available in retail outlets.  I don't have any famous bordeaux or burgandy, but I have some good California wines.  The Terra Valentine is a club-only selection from a single vineyard block.  The Ridge is from their ATP program.

These are what I am currently planning to bring:

Friday - Savannah Chanelle 2005 Tina Marie Pinot Noir - Should go well with BBQ Salmon.  Santa Cruz Mountains.
Saturday - 2003 Terra Valentine Cabernet Sauvignon K Block, Wurtele Vinyard Spring Mountain District, Napa
+ 2002 Ridge Syrah II, Lytton Estate

Yeah, Craig!  Way to set that bar.  More hedonism, everyone!

This could get exciting as we all start to drool over the possibilites.  I will have to reply with my selections at at a future date but I'm leaning towards either Washington Bordeaux blends (although infants) or California Pinot Noir, Viognier, or Garnacha of which I have a few real winners.  Guess I'll wait to see more of what's coming before trying to "compliment" the inventory.  Again, for my wines that I haven't tried, I'd be very interested in the notes from others.

When's this party again?  Next week?  No?  Darn.

How about two old world and two new world for PlanoWino +1.

'97 Poggio Antinco BdM
'02 Baumard QdC (you can always use a sticky)
'03 Bressler (maybe Bob will be there)
'98 d'Arenberg, The Dead Arm

Now if I can only remember this until September.

You may have to YELL!
I think the CT members our side of the pond have hearing aids (switched off).
Which reminds me of -

Mrs. Richards: I asked for a room with a bath.
Basil Fawlty: [indicating] You've got a bath!
Mrs. Richards: I am not paying seven pounds, twenty pence per night, plus VAT, for a room without a bath.
Basil Fawlty: There is your bath!
Mrs. Richards: [looking at it] You call that a bath? That's not big enough to drown a mouse. It's disgraceful.
Basil Fawlty: I wish you were a mouse.
Mrs. Richards: What? And another thing. I asked for a room with a view. When I pay for a view, I expect something more interesting than that.
Basil Fawlty: [going to window, indicating] That is Torquay, ma'am.
Mrs. Richards: That is not good enough.
Basil Fawlty: Well, may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeasts swinging majestically...
Mrs. Richards: Don't be silly. I expect to be able to see the sea.
Basil Fawlty: You can see the sea. It's over there, between the land and the sky.
Mrs. Richards: I'd need a telescope to see that!
Basil Fawlty: Well, may I suggest that you move to a hotel closer to the sea...
[sotto]
Basil Fawlty: or preferably in it?
Mrs. Richards: Now, listen to me. I am not satisfied, but I have decided to stay here. However, I shall expect a reduction.
Basil Fawlty: Why? Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?
Mrs. Richards: Because the room is cold, the bath is too small, the view is invisible, and the radio doesn't work.
Basil Fawlty: No, the radio works.
[crossing over to it]
Mrs. Richards: What?
Basil Fawlty: See if I can't fix it, you scabby old bat!
[he turns it on; it works fine - Manuel plugs his ears]
Basil Fawlty: I think we got something, there!
Mrs. Richards: [fiddling with hearing aid] What?
Basil Fawlty: Don't think me rude, but do you by chance have a hearing aid?
Mrs. Richards: Yes, I do have a hearing aid!
Basil Fawlty: Would you like me to get it mended?

I am looking at perhaps a 95 Angelus or maybe a 1996 Cos d'estournel.

Maybe a 2001 Two Hands Shiraz "Ares"

It'll be a gametime decision on those.

Well the thread is slipping.  Where is everyone.  CG, I am looking forward to tasting your Baumard Clos Ste. Catherine. along side of the Baumard QdC.  I haven't had the Clos in a really long time.

I'm not sure how many people will respond.  Many responses have been from people who do not regularly frequent the forum. Will try to keep it towards the top, though.

David,

I think La Dominique will be a great addition to the tasting.  Since fingers couldn't find it in CT, I suspect quite a few people have not tasted it.  Personally, I think it is a nicely done St. Emilion.  It will be intersting to see how it has withstood the test of time.  I have never tasted the '82 so I am looking forward to it.

Hmmm, any chance of saving a bit of the 1997 Poggio Antico and shipping it to Singapore? I'm a great fan of 1997 BdMs... many are starting to drink beautifully now.

Would love to if I knew how.  I do have a few more bottles left.  Just starting drinking them.  Are your duties as high as those in Hong Kong and China used to be?  When I was in Hong Kong and China a year ago, wine was far to expensive (when you know what you pay for it at home) to enjoy so it was off to Wal-Mart to buy wines from Oz.  They were more reasonable.

Michael - you'll have to come back now there's no duty.  Wine's are cheaper but still not the cheapest.  Where was the Wal-Mart or was this when you got home?

Wrighty,

It was in Wuhan on the mainland.  I even got to try some of the bigger Chinese brands like Dynasty and Great Wall.  They were better than I expected.  Then of course, there is the "snake" wine which I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

We would love to return to Hong Kong and the mainland.  Just don't know if it will happen.  There are still quite a few places in the world we have not been.

I am thinking of bring Bubbly unless weather is too cold
1. André Clouet Champagne Brut Rosé NV
2. René Geoffroy Champagne Expression Brut

If weather is too cold for bubbly, I might change to red wine instead.

mjobtx - didn't realise Walmart had made it to Wuhan.  The Chinese brands had/have (reportedly) Chilean bulk wine making up the majority of the blend.  The prices for them though are crazy, in HK they're upto $50 which can only be playing on Chinese patriotism.  I know English wines are this or more in the UK (and I guess there's some patriotism in there as well) but the grapes are grown in the UK and 'boutique' made so I'd say in a different class, although not that different a class from the rest of the market i.e champagne. Funny how American wines are cheapest in America but everywhere else 'home wines' are more expensive in their home market than overseas (I can buy Leeuwin Chardonnay in HK for the same retail as the cellar door!).

And so ends the rant for the day!

Wrighty,

Sooner or later, someone will probably complain about taking this thread off track but in the meantime...I think Wuhan has two Wal-Marts now.  Unlike our stores that are spread out on one level, this one was four stories high and extremely crowded.  Australia and Chile were well represented on the wine shelves, along with some Chinese brands and a few French producers that we don't see here in the U.S.  Except for the Aussie and Chinese brands, wines were very expensive or so unknown that I didn't want to risk them.

As for the UK, the July issue of Decanter has an interesting article and some ratings on English sparkling wines.

Orange County Fair opened this weekend and, as I previously posted, has the largest competition of California wines in the world.  As a lucky bonus for me,  my wife had met one of the Best of Show winemakers earlier this year at a Chamber of Commerce mixer and we were invited to a party with him last night, just after one of his Pinot Noir’s was named Best of Show at the fair.
Went to the fair Saturday afternoon, before the party, and sampled some 20 or so top-rated wines.   Surprised by the quality of Viognier, Muscat, and Grenache now being made in California and, of course, had some great Napa Cabs.
Ovene is the winery of Jeff and Genni White and it’s a true, grass-roots success.  Jeff started making wine in his OC garage in 1984 and their story is reminiscent of many of those that have pursued the dream.  You can read more here:

http://www.ovenewinery.com/history.php

It was a splendid evening by the pool at their friend’s beautiful home and the proceeds went to a worthy charity.  Jeff walked us through several of his wines with various food courses and gave very informative commentary about winemaking, tasting, appreciation, etc.  There were about 25 of us there so we really got to socialize with Jeff and the rest of the partygoers.  What nice people the White’s are!  Jeff can talk wine forever and is so unpretentious, you can tell success will not affect his graciousness or “guy-next-door” character.  Here’s some of the credentials of the wines we enjoyed:

2005 “The Puzzle” Pinot Noir, 4-Star Gold Medal,Best of Show, & Best in Class- Orange County Fair
2006  Viognier,  Platinum & Gold Medal, Best of Class- L A County Fair
2005 Solomon Hills Pinot Noir,  Gold Medal, Best Red Wine, Best Pinot Noir – Santa Barbara County Fair
2004 “The Puzzle” Syrah,  Gold Medal, Mid State Fair

We also had their Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Canelli (which I really liked)

Overall, a great wine day for me and that’s why I had to share.  I will bring bottles of the “The Puzzle” Pinot and the Viognier to Cellarpalooza, Sept.6.  I know it may not really stand up to all the 1st Growths and Grand Cru wines you guys are planning to bring but I think it will be great to bring something I’ve had such personal experience with.  Aren’t some of your favorites the ones that you’ve got a personal story about?  Call it the extended terroir of legend.

One other note from the day.  I didn’t meet one person at the fair or the party that was aware of CellarTracker.  I did my best to change that and I know several of the Wine Society members will be checking it out now, along with Jeff White.  I told him it will be a great way to see what real people think of his wines.  If I were a winemaker and not just wino,  I would still think CT is a great resource to get very useful information.  Good Luck, Jeff!

Tried some English (not British which can have foriegn grapes) Sparkling Wine at the vinyards
Good news - it was surprisingly good
Bad news - it was far more expensive than the equivalent French Champagne (way above other Sparklers).
