We're building a non-passive cellar (basement will be finished and FAR too warm).  I've read incidental bad things about some wall units, and they don't have a long life span (4-6 years, depending on who you believe).  Spoke with a local cellar builder who was hawking their proprietary split-unit system, and of course, he says they're far superior.  Yet, their warranty is 1 year, which is the same as for a wall unit.  Wall units, however, are substantially less expensive.

I'd appreciate any thoughts from those who've used either or both, and if you have recommendations for particular brands, that would be great as well.

A commercial grade split refigeration system is going to be far superior to any "through-the-wall" units (ie. Breezaire, Whisperkool etc.).  They come with a one year warranty because that is all that the manufacturers will give.  But keep in mind most of the equipment is similar to your home air conditioning equipment.  With minor maintenance (annual service) a split system should last you 20 years or so.  The through the wall units usually carry a one year parts and labor warranty and a 5 year warranty on the compressor.  IMO spend the money on the refrigeration system first.  Most people want to spend all thier money on the interiors (ie. racking, stone etc.) because that is what looks pretty.  Take care of your investment (wine) first and then make the space look great.
