I am extremely weak willed.

I ordered the St Cosme, Sequel, and Montes tonight - but I didn't just order a single bottle of each.  In order to justify the shipping charges, I ordered 2 or 3 of each, thereby cutting the shipping fee by .5 to .66 for each bottle - sound thinking, right?

I will pick up the Entity tomorrow.  It's the '04, I think, but it should be similar judging by the TNs.

I cannot find the '04 Glen Carlou and I am not going to experiment with the '05.

If you find that having a South African wine in the tasting is important, you might also hunt down this one:

2005 Waterford Shiraz Kevin Arnold

We, at the OC Poker & Wine Tasting, will be trying it as well.

Nice to hear from others that you are planning to participate. I'm sure that this highly clinical and very objective evaluation will prove to be the benchmark for judging Syrah the world over. sic

I am going to experiment with the '05....the store that had the Glen Carlou told me they had the 04, but when I got there it was the 05.  Oh well, can't hurt.

So, I experimented with a 24 hour aeration of the St Cosme over the last two days.  All I did was pop the cork on Tuesday (taking a small glass as a benchmark...for scientific purposes of course ), then put the cork back in and popped it back into the wine fridge over night.

Without giving too much away...DO IT!!!

I have had this wine a couple times now and I really like the freshness it shows at the pop, but with the time in the air it took on a whole other level of complexity that I didn't know it had in it.

Considering the price on this, I think that for our friends attending the OC event that I will bring two.  One that has been open overnight and another I'll pop at the event.  Such a drastic change in my opinion.

it'll be interesting to see if we can identify the two bottles as the same wine when tasting blind.  sounds fun, jeremy

Birch - if I could find it locally, I would do the same.  I'm curious to see what you find.  Maybe it has improved with time and I should order a bottle.

Jeremy - I will try it.  If I can find someone to join me, I'll do it blind (I have three bottles on the way).

Out of my own curiosity, how about a roll-call for the weekend ?

No need for the OC Poker guys to report but what about everyone else  -  who's in for the tasting ?

I ordered a couple of bottles of Montes Alpha, and hopefully I get them on Thursday. Friday is a holiday here in Finland, and I am likely to disappear off to my remote, isolated (no internet, no running water, no heating) summer cottage if the weather continues to be like this. So my tasting note will appear some time next week.

We hear you guys beat yourselves with twigs for fun as well?
What do you do if you're not having fun ;)

I suspect Montes Alpha is the only wine available in the UAE, so I'll be tasting just one wine :(

Bit too early for that, need some leaves on the birch twigs before they are good for beating ourselves in the sauna at about 90 degrees C (no heating does not mean that the sauna does not function!!!). To cool off we jump into the Baltic, which is still only just above freezing, since the ice just left a couple of weeks ago. Fun? Who needs fun, when you can punish your body!

I ordered the Montes, Sequel, and St Cosme.  All are in transit.  I will be drinking the wines this weekend, but I don't know when I'll be able to get on the computer.  What is the schedule for you west coast folk?

John Platter rates the Glen Carlou 4.5 stars which could bode well.

I am using the Waterford Shiraz for my South African wine.  I will need you all to give me a comparison to the Glen Carlou.

The 05, which had been scored very low by I think WS.

I found the '05 very interesting to follow over a few days.  Really didn't mesh for me until the 3rd day and then it I liked it.

2006 Duval Entity packed away and ready to make the road trip - will be opening it with some friends at a brilliant Satay place in Malaysia (Satay being a local kebab - this particular place does pork, chicken, beef and tripe - seasoned in saffron and other herbs and bbq'ed over a charcoal fire. Traditional dipped into a slightly sweet, slightly spicy peanut sauce). Should go well with the wine I think.

Decant if you can - the '04 was great, but still better on the second day.

It's Friday night here in HK and so far:

Glen Carlou - decanted, corked, but back in the bottle to see if it blows off enough to drink tomorrow or Sunday
Sequel - Extracted - I've grimaced drinking it!
Entity - Lovely, new world but balanced.

No conclusion yet but.....

both! ... this way you'll have a longer time with each of them, giving you an opportunity to explore both to a greater extent.

So have some tasting notes on the 05 and 06 Sequel, do we post them here or on CT?

Too bad I couldn't really justify bringing the bottle of Entity or Saint Cosme to Walla Walla, just would have been a waste as the wife has a cold and with all the sampling during the day, I'm a bit shot for drinking a bottle by myself in the eve. Anxious to see what you guys think...

You could post them here or post them in CT like any other bottle. Then create an event and put the link here.

I have had the Entity (good call saving it for later), the Sequel, and Waterford Shiraz as my S. African contribution. Entity is the top so far.

Wrighty - so do I now know what overextracted tastes like? Have to read your TN to see what you didn't like.

And - though I feel a bit silly - I went back to taste the Sequel again after having read this thread. I can tell you all, with great certainty, that it does not go well with Colgate toothpaste. Blechh. I will have to try it again tomorrow.
