Your TN on Smith Haut Lafitte 2004 made my day.
Hope when I drink mine I have the same positive experience.

i also bought a nice Spanish wine I had recently at a wine bar............called Malleolus.  Pricy but extreme quality.

We just decided to load up on any 05 people bailed on.  The economy has hit some folks badly.  My futures buyers have cases people did not accept because they are broke.  I have gotten some EP pricing on  some highly rated and rare 05 Bdx and burgundy this week because the buyers dont want it on their books.  I scooped up a full case of DRC 05 for EP pricing.  June has been expensive but fun.

Found out that d'Arenberg have a UAE Distributor, so thought I'd have a d'Arenberg tasting.
Bought:
The Coppermine Road 2004
Footbolt 2005
Laughing Magpie 2006
The Custodian 2005
The Jump Stump 2006

Now it's not horizontal, nor vertical, so I guess it's 3-D?
The prices didn't seem as bad as usual, perhaps they're just luring the customers (hope so).

Yes the prices were kind; I paid from $14 - $60 for my wines, the CT averages are from $11 - $55.
So given that we have 30% alcoholics tax, that wasn't bad.

Yes looking a bargain and safely stored deep under ground in Wiltshire - so safe even I can't get to them right now.
But last time I looked you could pop into Waitrose or Oddbins and pick some up.
In the US it seems Aussie wines are more available, but more expensive than in the UK (or perhaps not if I shopped in CostCo?).

In real time I'm drinking the 2006 Stump Jump.
Current TN:
Clearest, bright, bright red (almost brick).
Nose - smelt like an old claret that had grown up in Australia - sort of powerful medicine, come bat cave (not The Bat Cave).
Taste - let's just leave it as 'ínteresting' * for now.

I do think it's changing for the better though, or it could be killing my taste receptors?
I'll try the next bottle chilled and pretend it's Beajolais Noveau.
L.

* best word in the English language - means anything you want it to.

May overuse that 'interesting' word - just thinking about the 2005 d'Arenberg Grenache The Custodian?
"Different" springs to mind at the moment?...........
Not a grenache expert - obviously.

I'm enjoying reading about your explorations into New World wine.  Kind of forces you to come up with a new set of adjectives, doesn't it?  The use of cassis, wet stone, pencil lead, cigar box, violets, forest floor can get monotonous over time. You might want to incorporate "sledgehammer" into your vocabulary now.

I have noticed some CT drinking windows extending well beyond 2070, actually into the next century.  Umm, errr, mmm not sure how to break it to everybody so how about I use a euphemism:

“Five bucks says you are not the one drinking them at that time”.

Cheers,
Richard

This is crock of sh-t #2.

I am sure everybody know by now that the futures are PRE-PAID!
They were paid ALREADY and bailing out on the stuff one paid already makes as much sense as
"always drink best bottle to worse............"

Sindy, thanks,
I saw it coming, happiness is not to be disapointed.

Shayne still has inventory, not because somebody bought and can't accept the delivery, like you said, but rather due to him ordering more than he could sell.

see what I mean!?
Everything what was NOT sold is still selling at the 2005 prices.

What about:

Headache inducing
Alchy
Jammy
Viscous
Prune juice

Thinking of some "cult" Barosa Shiraz I have had recently in particular.

On another note, I bought two comfort wines this week:

1. Krug Grande Cuvee (at an excellent price, given how much  we normally pay in Singapore); and
2. Domaine Fourrier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers 2004 (now, I have not ever had this before, but I love Fourrier's wines and Chambolle in general as an appelation)

Thanks for the descriptors guys - the "headache inducing" may have been useful this morning, although a little jumping around cleared the cobwebs.
What's 'Alchy', I'm guessing similar to headache inducing?
I think I now know why Australians swear a lot, certainly my first thoughts weren't "presumptuous little wine ...".
And may I add:
filling removing,
tongue shrinking,
lovely drop of juice

Got higher hopes for the Footbolt and Coppermine Road, anyone want to worry me in advance?
I might have one with the Pizza tonight - TGIT.

Holy - moly,
there is even MORE 2005 Bordeaux at ABC, go get 'em tigress:

Dear Serge Birbrair,

We have just today added the following three wines to our 2005 Bordeaux Futures Offer. These three will be posted on our Website, abcfws.com this afternoon, but I wanted to give you a heads up, since we don't often add to the list. If you have an interest, please let me know. I have 16-18 cases each. Delivery should be late 2008, early 2009.

CHATEAU de FIEUZAL 2005, Pessac-Leognan
Smoke, black truffles, crushed rock, and leafy notes combined with earth, fresh mushrooms, and cassis result in a complex set of aromatics for the dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Fieuzal. Medium-bodied with crisp acidity and high tannin, this serious wine is closed, but promising. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027. WINE ADVOCATE 90
$543/cs

CHATEAU COS LABORY 2005, St. Estephe
One of the finest wines I have tasted from this estate, the 2005 Cos Labory exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, aromas of road tar, blackberries, creme de cassis, forest floor, smoke, and graphite, medium to full body, and abundant tannin. It is a complete, dense effort with high tannins in the finish. Once the tannins melt away, it should represent an outstanding example of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. WINE ADVOCATE 89+
$636/cs

CHATEAU FONBEL 2005, St. Emilion
A sleeper of the vintage, Ausone’s proprietor, Alain Vauthier, produces this beautiful St.-Emilion. It possesses a sumptuous bouquet of crushed rocks, incense, raspberries, boysenberries, and a touch of cherries. Some earthiness intrudes on the palate, but it adds complexity and nuance rather than detracting from the wine’s beautiful fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with admirable elegance and purity as well as ripe tannin, this beauty can be enjoyed over the next 15+ years.
WINE ADVOCATE 90
$450/cs

Kind regards

Thank you,

Shayne Hebert

Alchy [adj]: Perjorative shortform for "alcoholic", used to describe wines that have ridiculously high amounts of alcohol (from 15.5% upwards), commonly associated with sweetness, jamminess, viscosity and heat. Usually used in conjunction with "headache inducing" and "sledgehammer".

On another note, D'arenberg in my experience are one of the more elegant producers of dry reds in Australia (along with top-end Penfolds, Henschke, Wynns, Grant Burge - generally the really old established makers rather than the Robert Parker favoured "cult" wineries). As a whole, it seems that a lot of the new world wine makers are moving away from the overblown, BIG style, and are moving towards a more subtle, food friendly and less punishing on the palate style. That certainly seems to be the trend in Australia.

I remember the Footbolt and Coppermine Road to be decent wines that represent really good QPR. No TNs as they were tasted on the fly unfortunately. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy them. Let us know how it went!

Getting better - Laughing Magpie 2006.
Are they taking the p*ss with the names?
Significant step up.
As always great colour, but with a strong (sweet) fruit, that seemed to have dry/tannin aftertaste?
Stayed good 'til the end of the bottle (when I finished the Stump Jump and found it less bad - am I mellowing/drunk?)
For a Thursday night - perfectly adequate.

I get 05 EP prices from him...........on stuff.  Infact inventory he cant move I get dibs on first before a general sale.  Check CT friday night for a bottle he is Fed exing me tomorrow AM.  I will be drinking it and posting notes.  If the bottle is good I will buy all his remaining inventory at a riduculous price.  It happens Serge, maybe not to you, but it happens.  The world is not Sergecentric.
