Colonel,

Likewise, I'm afraid, can't help you with the 'silly' wine.  Doesn't sound like the type of wine I'd buy to drink but from an investment..... guess you need a liquid market i.e. the states, so need to set yourself up stateside.

So what's the CT view, does

warrant being listed here?

Clos Apalta is very nice as well.  Definitely warrants being listed in my opinion.  Up until 05, It was on my 'must buy' list every year but they raised the price a bit so now I just buy Almaviva every year instead.  I think its a better wine.

I own 1997 thru 2005, but as with much I own, haven't had the joy of opening one yet.
Am spending more time on Chilean wines though.
Through a Chilean friend of a friend I actually know a vineyard owner!

Not sure the latest status of the "best" list, but seems the thread is still alive and kicking. hope I can help to fill in a few o fthe missing Chile points and add to some debate. I moved to Chile with my work, which has given be the opportunity to "educate" myself in the pleasure of the wines here.

My top picks from Chile are:
Matetic Syrah 2004, 2005 (with the black label, a siginificant step better than EQ in the WS top 100). Very unique style: pure, delicate and lush. This is one of the top 2 wines I have ever drunk - the other was 1st gth bordeaux.
I'll second the earlier proposals for Almaviva and Chadwick
Carmin de Peumo 2004 is an excellent wine and was superb value when it cost $80. But now the price is $150 for the latest release. With little improvment since 2004 it remains good, but not good value
Clos Apalta is famous and does well (see above!), but I did not really enjoy it when I tried several vintages at Casa Lapostolle cellars. I guess it is a matter of taste and probably fits will with the bold drinker's preferences.

Very good, but not (yet) quite reaching the heights on the ones above are:
Casa Marín Syrah 2004, Pinot Noir Litoral 2003, 04 and Pinot Noir Lo Abarca Hills 2004 (Their Riesling and Sauv B also great, but not in scope of this thread)
Lurton Gran Araucano
VOE Ge
Santa Rita Pehuén

And from Argentina, you need to have Achaval Ferrer's Quimera on the list. I have tried 2003, 04 and 05. All excellent. Their Malbec is also excellent, although I prefer the Quimera.

Yes I'm glad we're still debating this one.
I started only months ago collecting Chileans, but if you're right I started in the right place:

2005 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2004 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2003 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2002 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2001 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2000 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

1999 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

1998 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

1997 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto)

2006 Errazuriz Shiraz Max Reserva (Chile, Aconcagua)

2002 Errazuriz Viñedo Chadwick (Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley)

2006 Matetic Syrah EQ (Chile, Aconcagua, San Antonio Valley)

2005 Montes Alpha M (Chile, Central Valley, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley)

Trouble is they're not for drinking yet, so I'm going on trust.
Thanks for the Argentinian suggestion.

Another pair of great Argentine wines includes the Cobos Marchiori wines (the Malbec and the Nico blend).
Crafted under the tutelage of Paul Hobbs.

Another vote for the Oliverhill "Jimmy Section"; in addition to the 2005 also try the 2004...

Warning: buy the Oliverhill "Jimmy Section" only if you don't mind screw caps...

Thanks all, some nice suggestions
If the wine is good and I'm not planning cellaring for a decade screw cap (good ones) is OK by me.

The nice thing about screw tops is that they give the option of storing upright for extended lengths of time--although most wines that come in a screw top probably shouldn't be cellared for long enough to make a difference.

Has anyone heard about these new glass stoppers that a couple of vintners have been trying out?  I'm not sure how they work, but they are supposed to be a better  option than cork or screw top, and work even with bottles that should be cellared for many years.
