Killer, wine nerds, i love you people. You make me feel so much better about my self distructive feild of expertise (do not however mistake me for some wanker who thinks i know everything about the subject, i know i dont). so after introducing myself i guess ill bring it up to speed. Fingers i dont think grange is a 100 point wine anymore my friend, in fact gourmet traveller's wine and winestate both had shiraz write ups last issue and neither scored it over 95, infact im looking right now at picture of grange creator Max Schubert with a title reading,To the renegades. To those who do things for love not money, well? at $450 (aus) for '02' or '03' at about 380 last time i looked i dont know i can take that very..... at all. Bullshit i call. But enough with that there is no need for savage slandering here, my point(yes were all surprised im even going to make one) is that if you blind tasted something a fraction of the cost, Say shaw and smith adl hills 03-04-05(all really ****ing good) i would bet you would prefer them, pikes would do it from the claire valley, giaconda's getting up there for price but i think blows even a well agaed grange out of the water, flag the hype man, thats what i was trying to say.
Jamscreator, yes dude, the signature is ****ing great especially for what you pay for it that was one of the first drops i got in oz and thought i must have found the land of great great wine then i had jacobs creek. dont pay any attention to wrighty about decanter though, i read it and find there idea( not that it any less valuable than ours) about oz/kiwi wine way off what we think either that or there in pocket with some of the distrubutiers and makers. different tastes thats all that can be said. not that hh is much better is you read the smh.
**** i have been woffling on here for sometime and said very little about MY fave, well I will have to say, dog point pinot, why? because i can afford to drink it regually because it always amazes me how damn good it is and lastly because im a one eyed kiwi boy who grew up with wino pearents. There is to much wood in the rest of this years releases(nz07) most of which i have tasted in the last 4 weeks but we will see what happens in the bottle (im still waiting to see what the escarpment will do over the next 2 to 3). bugger i was trying to come off a wanker and i did. opps i guess some big fish gonna come after me now, good i need an excuse to pop this 'cafe block'

Dear Silly, not to imply that Grange is the be all, end all of fine wine.  Just that was my only experience with something rated so high.  And, I guess I was also jabbing the Colonel a little bit about getting outside of France.  However, whether you're Aussie or Kiwi, I recommend you view my thread in the "Diving Head First - New Zealand" forum.  Just returned 2 weeks ago and had an awesome time and believe that Martinborough is the new up and comer.  Alana Estate makes the best Pinot I've ever tried.

Condolences to the All Blacks

Well, in the last year, for me, it would be a 1993 Castello di Ama Vigna l'Apparita Toscana IGT .  We bought these in Italy years ago (1997 actually) and i recall that they were the Tuscan Wine of theYear by WS and rated 96 at the time...

had the first of them last year and still remember that it brought out all the reasons you cellar and do this...

Eric it's hard to get riled when you can't understand what's being said - must be the Antipodean accent ;)
Seriously 99% of the people I've come across hear will not be phased: I didn't even notice fingers ''jabbing me'', second thoughts what are those red marks?
Cheers,
L.

I've got a case of beer riding on France vs England, they have to beat England by 10pts though  - pretty good at swinging the odds my way ;)
This is double or quits for the case I won when SA didn't beat Fiji by more than 30 points!
My opposition loves his rugby and gets too emotional when he bets.
The Colonel though - stiff upper lip and all that, may the best team win; but I'll take the beer!

Colonel

I have to agree, the smart money should be on France; ten points is quite a margin though, especially as no-one seems to be kicking very well this tournament.

If you haven't seen it , you have to check the team message from Kenny Rogers on the attached link, it's an absolute hoot !!

Wondering if it would be worth losing just to avoid hearing Kenny sing again ;)

Looks like my bet's off, he wanted just 7pts; but one try is much easier to win by than 1 1/2.
Looks like I'll just keep my case of beer for the brave Fijian display.

My palate is fairly new, and I have only in the recent years been able to afford buying more than one bottle of anything over 40.00, so I am a bit intimidated by whats being thrown around as the best.

In my college days I drank wine outta the box because i could get a quicker buzz.   I sobered up for 10 years and moved to Sonoma County and tried wine again.   I didnt like the big cabs and one day I purchased a 1998 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir.

I was suddenly struck with Love.  My next bottle was a 98 Shea Vineyards.   I then decided to jump into wine with both feet.  Over the last year I have moved from US wines to French CDP's and Bandols  2004 Domaine Tempier was a mind blower for me.
Now just recently with my trip to Italy, I can taste the difference between Vino Nobile and Brunello. My next mind blowing wine has been 1997 Il Poggione  WOW I like that stuff.    I also recently tried a 73 Ch. La Nerthe and purchased a couple 82-85 bordeaux blends that I will open soon  (gotta try some older vintage wines..I am liking that stuff now)  I still go out and purchase 7$ wines, because i want to make sure that when I do get to taste a Grange, or a Lafite that I can appreciate it.

Stopped in Fiji on the way home from New Zealand and had an awesome time.  The country is still extremely poor, however, and needs lots of foreign aid and it doesn't help that the Aussie and Kiwi politicos are trash-talking and discouraging tourism there.  The RWC success means a lot to those people and I only wish they could have upset OZ along the way.  I reviewed 14 different NZ wines while I was there and brought some home.  You can read the lengthy account in the "Diving Head First - New Zealand" post, if interested.  Thanks, Colonel for the daily vocabulary teachings - love "Antipodean" and will use with your kind permission!  And ya, I can do without another Kenny video, too.

Go Springboks!  (from my SA wife)

I could live with ''antipodal'' in the adjectival context.
Try not to drop too many vowels though; people will think you're an American or a Cockney ;)

Hey Eric what's with the censorship?
I was just trying to say a "Londoner, born within the sound of Bow Bells" and it deleted the first 4 letters.

Sounds like a co**-up to me ;-)

I wonder if the French will manage to smuggle a c***erel into the stadium tonight, I do hope so. It’s a shame the ‘elf n’ safety people stopped that glorious tradition.

Now that might just be too much of a good thing…...

It’s England BTW (not the Lions) playing, the two are not the same.

Suggestions for South African wines (blood-red preferably)  to go with the biltong and braii would be welcome, I will be sure to have a bottle of Allesverloren (“all is lost”) port-style on hand in case the unthinkable happens !!!

serious faux pas.  what do you expect from a yank?  We don't even get to see the games until 2 days after and that's pay-per-view!  I can help make it up by recommending the following:

Bellevue Estate Pinotage Tumara '04

Meerlust Merlot  '03-'05

Uitkyk Sauvignon Blanc Landgoedwyn '05-'06

All under $25/btl  Don't forget the rusks!

Not easy to decide, but the following are the wines I've given the highest scores;

1975 Château d'Yquem
1964 Château Cheval Blanc
1905 Seppelt 100 Year Old Para Liqueur Vintage Tawny
1980 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil
1996 Krug Champagne Brut

I drank my last bottle of Mitolo GAM 2004 the other night, and it was pretty spectacular.  But then again I love the aussie juice.  1995 Ducru is also at the top of my rather short list.  Another great bottle in recent memory was a 2004 L'aventure estate cuvee, young but awesome.  I have not been fortunate enough to taste any of the great vintages of Bordeaux, but what the hell I am only 24.  I certainly understand the difficulty in finding friends that appreciate wine, most of my friends would just as soon have a bud light than a fine wine.

I guess they have to trade up to Michelob before they're ready for the jump to Mateus Rose.

I would have to say that the best wine I have drank (to date) is 2005 Herman Story White Hawke Syrah.  I doubt if it stays there, there is some 2003 Bordeaux aging that will likely surpass it and I have not drank my Clio yet either.

Hopeful too of 2003 Bordeaux.
Cos, Margaux and Poyferre are my best choices.
When are you going to drink yours?
Parker says we have to hold on for 3 more years ;)
