Suggestions for South African wines (blood-red preferably)  to go with the biltong and braii would be welcome,

Ricardo,

2003 Waterford Shiraz from Stellenbosch is incredible.  It's a dead-ringer for a No. Rhone Syrah.

Caveat: This is the only S. African wine I've ever tried and liked.

I'd love to hear from others about what other S. African wines I might like, given my favorable opinion of the '03 Waterford Shiraz.

Thanks.

Since I've a limited budget, and have only been into wine for a few years, I've yet to taste a truly "mindblowing" wine.  I'd have to say the "best wine I've ever drunk" is probably the 2002 vintage of "The Maiden".  It was amazingly smooth, rich, complex, powerful, yet still elegant all at the same time.  However, I must say that my very recent experience (3 weeks ago) with a 1995 Gruaud Larose surely opened my eyes to the possibilities that finer Bordeaux has to offer (I can only wait for the days when I can afford to buy some of the big boys (1st growths) -- I'm thinking Ducru might be my next step up, price wise, or perhaps Las Cases.)  After drinking the Gruaud I just had to go buy another, which I plan on sitting on for at least another 2, if not 10, years.

All that being said, the bottles I'm truly looking forward to popping in a decade or so include: '04 Beaucastel and Clos des Papes, '05 Clos de Papes, and my '04 Numanthia.  There are others too, but each of those aforementioned bottles will await a special occasion.  I suppose my other '95 Gruaud Larose will be rather enjoyable too.

A Spanish wine 2004 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio

I bought half a case on word from one of my trusted retailers.  It has been getting great ratings from CTers.  I am holding it for a couple of more years based on my experiences with a couple of other 2004s.

Hopeful too of 2003 Bordeaux.
Cos, Margaux and Poyferre are my best choices.
When are you going to drink yours?
Parker says we have to hold on for 3 more years ;)
L.

I am going to start drinking the big boys (Cos, Leoville Barton, Ducru) in 2013.  Some the others like Smith Haut Lafite, Giscours, Branaire-Ducru, etc., I have already tried and decided that they will be ready in 2-3 years.  Fortunately I have enough of those to taste here and there before then.  I am really curious about my 96 Cos and Montrose, I want to start drinking them, but a couple of folks have told me that they still need a few years.

Given the astronomic prices and limited availability of wines where I live I have dabbled with cheap (if I'd bought them in UK) wines.
Actually liked a Graham Beck Cabernet Sauvignon (SA) and I suspect it's not expensive in the real world.

We're putting down some similar wines
I have tried the Cos 1996 and although it was good, not earth shatteringly so.
I picked it up cheap from an auction site (before they went bankrupt - caveat emptor) so maybe the storage wasn't perfect.
I'm holding on to the other 6 (it was a mixed case 7/5 with 1993 Cos).

My best ever wines:

Lynch Bages (Wine Society) 1962
Conn Creek Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa) 1976
Beaucastel CNDP 1990
Chasse Spleen 1961 (5 times)

Various bottles of first growths don't get a look in on these.

Would have to be on my 40th Brthday...actually 6 wines:

59 Latour
68 Haut Brion
77 Mouton
89 Margaux (simply sublime)
98 Lafite

88 d'Yquem

For new world stuff I would have to say the huge wines coming out of Australia. Recently the 2001 and 2002 Marquis Philips Integrity and I just love everything that comes out of Noon. From California I would have to go with the 87 Spottswoode or maybe it was the moment...or BOTH :)

While it's traditional to go for something half a century old I'd vote for a comparitive tasting of all the great Bordeaux reds from 2000.
Should be just about right to start them: then you can repeat in 2017 and 2022 ..........

1956 La Tache. Low fill but still amazing for such an old wine. Next to that I would have to say 82 Cos

I've got a few odd '82's that I bought in 1991 and shipped to Asia and back.
I know I have Leoville Barton and may just have Cos - hope so.
Wish me luck they haven't been treated kindly.

I think the wine that I have had that I would rate the highest would be the 2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Poker Face that I had at a friends. Still can't believe it was open so young, but it was by far the best syrah I have ever had, and possibly the best wine I've had. I rated it 97 points.

Only other wine I have scored above a 95 was the '02 Insignia, which I gave '96 points.

Have some other stuff that is currently sleeping, but don't think I have any 100 pointers in there. Time will tell!

Domäene Müller from West Steiermark in Austria has made a fantastic TBA out of the Blauer Wildbacher grape, a stunning dessertwine with 236 g/ of sugar and 12,8g/l of acidity. I have only tasted the 2000 vintage, but it's amazing...

Out of red wines, Bartolo Mascarello and Giacomo Conterno has amazed me everytime I have tasted their wines.

White favourite is 1990 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel from Markus Molitor.

After you post once to this thread, that's pretty much it.
Perhaps it should have been:
"This wine was exceptionally good, I suggest you lot try it sometime."

Hands down 01 Haut Brion and 01 d'Yquem. Both of these are 100 pointers in my book. I can still taste them today. It's absolutely amazing that a liquid or anything at that matter can have such a profound affect on me.

Great to hear about the HB 2001 - I have a number in the cellar
Apparently it's a wine which polarises opinions - even the great RP organisation.
Personally he's been pretty consistent with scores between 92 and 95, ending up near the top end if I'm not mistaken.
But at an EWS Blind tasting it had mixed reviews (back in Oct 2004 that is).
Key features: very tight,  tannic, good acidity, little fruit, long finish, very young.
It appears to attract those who value structure, good tannins and a long finish:
fruit bomb fans please avoid.
This one is going to be interesting to try and 2010 might have given it just about enough time (well that's the Chateau's rec.).

Lebanon make some good reds, along with Musar I'd recommend Chateau Kefraya (I do know someone who owns 10% of it).
Had the pleasure of watching the winemaker blending the various grapes at Keyfraya in the beautiful Bekka valley.

I responded some time back about my favorite wine memory and included whites only.  My reds are:

1) '82 Lafite-drunk in 2006 (generous friend shared with us at a dinner party--nice surprise)

2) Some unknown '85 Barolo brought back by my sister in law from her year abroad in Italy in the early '90s.  She had us store it (pre cellar) as we were not moving around as much.  The bottle was totally abused but when finally opened in '05, it was marvelous.  I had never had a fully aged/mature wine before, and realized the only way I'll ever be able to drink wine like this is to buy it young and age it myself.  Then I bought building supplies and built my wine cellar.  It was a labor of love.  That was an important bottle of wine--I should have saved it.

From my early days, how about the '76 Egon Muller Sharzhofberger Spatlese and Auslese in winter '77 or maybe it was '78. No words that I know of can come close to describing that aroma and flavor. You had to be there when the corks were pulled and the wines were poured. Put your nose in this. I mean, WOW. It was a perfect storm - vintage, grapes, wine, timing. The wines ripped and I was there, glass in hand, lost in pleasure - "ok, I get it." I want more and I want it NOW.

All my drinking buddies would be surprised that my best is not a Cali Cab, but in truth a Bordeaux: 1967 Lafite from a pristine magnum.

Adds credence to the theory that the great Chateaux can make good wine in very bad years.
Maybe I'll have a dabble on 2007's after all (certainly won't be buying Lafite 2005 at current prices).

With all of your activity with CT how come you have not post more tasting notes? Everyone seems interested in what you have to say.
