the general outlook all over France is that '07 is pretty much a wash.

Not CdP, though. Those will be good.

Yes, Thanks, I remember you saying that before.  Perhaps it will be my year to buy some more Rhone wine...

Also Languedoc appears to have had a good year (although finding those price worthy wines on the global market might be more difficult for that region!) in 2007, based on discussions with a couple of producers. Perhaps Rhone down to Languedoc had the favourable weather, whereas Bordeaux/Loire had the unfavourable weather? There is the Central Massif in between (more or less) to stop the clouds rolling in from the Atlantic.

One more thing about France: The Alsace had an excellent vintage.

I have LB since 2000 and Pontet since 2003.
Just added a Reserve de Leoville Barton 2000,1,4 (just to see whether the extra money really is worth it).
Haven't yet tried any of mine head-to-head.
Joys of the future.

I'm actually a big fan of many of the second wines from the classified growths although not willing to spend $150+ for a Forts de Latour.  I like Les Fiefs de Lagrange ('03), Reserve de Comtesse ('01), Croix de Beaucaillou, Dame de Montrose, etc.

Hi I am a Cellar Tracker from 'down under',  just starting out and just loving CT. I would be interested to know what you have been buying from New Zealand, to both drink and invest in. I live close to the Central Otago area and have been watching how quickly it is becoming known for good pinot noir wines
cheers

Welcome in and go All Blacks.  Wife and I were there last Sept and loved it so much, we've applied for residency.  As for wines from there, check out some of the great reporting features on CT and you can really see what people are consuming.  Just click on the Tasting Note header and then summarize by region. Personally, I think Martinborough is the rising star.

My notes from the trip:

Also, considering this thread topic, does anyone have word of the Aussie and Kiwi '08 harvest?

Welcome Kiwi.

I buy a lot of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Really good stuff. My favourite so far has been the 2006 Felton Road Pinot Noir. Amazing wine.

I know it is good. It is really hard to get here, You dont see it in the shops. You have to be near the cellar door or buy it online (if your lucky) Hey thanks for the welcome looking forward to participating in the discussions

Pontet Canet released @ 445 pounds per case In Bond (that's about 544 pounds fully taxed, i.e. over $1000)
That's double what I paid for 2004 and a lot more than 2005: it would have to be very good.
Having said that the current prices of PC have increased as follows (pounds sterling IB):
2005  850
2004  NA
2003  520
2002  230
2001  295
2000  500

Bob gave it "(91-94)" but no tasting notes (hey, here's Bob giving a wine a rating without tasting notes -- that guy wouldn't be a popular reviewer in CT...)

I can't bring myself to pay this much for '07 Pontet Canet.

I've seen his scores, but no notes.
Maybe Neal Martin had the pencil?

Are you a buyer Colonel ? I cant talk myself into it, after reading the notes on 2005 and 2003 I am still leaning towards the 2003 rated 96.One of the most profound Pontet Canet made over the last decade the man stated. You cant beat that in my eyes.
What 2007's are you looking at,its a lot harder this year !!

Totally agree, haven't decided whether to buy 2007 at all (at release that is).
My main dealer still only has 13 relatively minor Chateaux listed, Pontet Canet being the first significant one.
I made a few token purchase of 2006, well down (1/7) on 2000 and (1/6) 2005.
Reading the experts views makes them sound pretty thin - weedy sums it up best.
Will probably buy just a few that I already own across multiple vintages, just for comparison sake (to check on the experts as well).

Has anyone seen Parker comments on the 2007 wines?
I've seen plenty of scores, but no comments, and as Maestro says that's just not on in CT.
I can think of four possibilities:
1.  He wants the other pundits to go first (esp. Neal Martin).
2.  He's issued them, but only to paying customers (my fav. guess).
3.  He's a slow typist.
4.  He's worked out that only the scores mean anything in the outside world and he's saving the effort?

Really would like to know.

L.

Just ordered another 11 Cases of 2005 Cotes du Rhone.  2005 is amazing and it is the deal of the year.

Recently tried some 2007 rhones, and they seemed very promising.  Although I agree with the duckster that there are some phenomenal 2005 CDR's out there, along with 2006.  Some of the best values out there...

And regarding Kiwi, I've had some very impressive NZ pinot's as well lately.  Wish I could get my hands on some syrah's, as well.  But the '05 Dog Point and Palliser were very nice, along with the '06 Nautilus.  All are good values, as well.

As they keep Neal's scores and reviews completely separated from the "official" WA scores (as Neal puts it, he runs a separate "kingdom" in the web site), I am not sure what that would accomplish.

"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King"

It's an old practise when clients critique advertising agency presentations that they let the most junior person speak first (who then tries to say as much as possible to seem as bright as the superiors who follow).
I can't see NM having a stand up row with RP as per the JC clash (highlighted elsewhere).
Independent, but just so much I'd guess.
