I have always wanted to work on more descriptive and creative notes and with the favorite author's feature, now I have some incentive.

Mr. Nowak:

Why is it necessary to be such an arrogant jerk, especially if you're not the person being questioned, and when the questioning certainly isn't insulting? It seems to me that this website is supposed to be a community venture, in which we all profit from each other's experiences with wine. If you're only on here for your own benefit, well that's great I suppose, just a tiny bit selfish maybe?

Dan,

FWIW, Jeff is brusque but actually an EXTREMELY nice and generous guy. (He actually tried to edit his thread to add a smiley, but it doesn't seem to have stuck.) Anyway, I'm vouching for him, and I promise that his words on this thread are a poor summation of who he actually is.

alright...that's it. maybe it is who i am, if that means i reply to ridiculous, baseless comments by speaking my mind. brusque? despite eric's hollow defense, i do have to be provoked. and when some idiot comes on and baits me enough, i'll bite...pretty hard. all you sanctimonious knuckleheads...listen up. i didn't misque the smiley face (nice try, eric). i did however edit in a sarcastic "have a nice day", which my (two) friends know means i've had enough. all you guys are proving is that the forum isn't worth anyone's time. a guy besmirches a close friend of mine, saying he can't be serious about his hobby because he has a certain percentage of entries that include only a score. SO WHAT?? i think the loss in the community has been that now this guy, notoriously shy, has cut everyone off from reading his notes. hello...YOUR loss. it's not a question of weather or not this forum is "friendlier" than ebob or not. please, take some of this crap to the real street, and see how long it lasts. jesus. have a nice day.

Sorry Jeff, I really thought you had added a smiley, not trying a hollow defense. Anyway, you're a big boy, and you know how to defend yourself. I know that you call it as you see it and don't tolerate any guff. Fair enough. That said, forums, email and other online communication can be pretty blunt instruments. My hope is that as this forum evolves it maintains a tone and civility that is a step above some of the other online places.

Regarding your friend, it's not possible to turn public access to tasting notes off. Have him email me in case of any confusion there, but it has always worked this way and will continue to. (Cellar privacy is a different story.)

And my continued feeling about the tasting notes is that each user, first and foremost, should record whatever has value for them. If that is "just" a score or "just" a note then so be it. It is better than nothing. And in aggregate it all helps to paint a picture about a wine.

Eric, we all admire you to death, but Mr. Novak has posted three times in the forum and all three times he has been unnecessarily aggressive and offensive. Had he simply put forth his point without aggression (i.e., that his friend takes wine extremely seriously and tastes so many wines that writing taste notes for everything is not possible) we would have welcomed his view. But he has chosen to be aggressive every single time (including the posting in another thread), just labeling everyone in the forum an "idiot", just because of this issue.

I can respect that he feels scores without notes add value -- Bob Parker does it some times. That's fine. But this unnecessary aggression is just unnaceptable.

As far as whether someone posts 10000 notes with nothing but a score or if they write 10 notes with 500 words of blabber, who cares?

However,  I can't see why Jeff honestly has to be crazy about it.  He is acting like we stole his kid's ice cream cone.

"all you sanctimonious knuckleheads."  WTF?!

"please, take some of this crap to the real street, and see how long it lasts."  What are we, teenageers?

Get over yourself.

Has there been a term coined yet for the cyber equivalent of  "roadrage?"

If not, then from here forth we can all refer it to pulling a "jeff".
Noun:  "jeff" as in:  "if you knuckleheads don't shut up you are going to get a jeff"
Verb: "to jeff"  Conjugated: I jeff, you jeff, he/she/it jeffs, we jeff, you jeff, they jeff
Adverb: "jeffly"  as in:  "acting jeffly"
Explitive: "j**f"

What does this have to do with the wine world?  I think we can all answer that question ourselves...and move on.

Jeff, I don't know what is friendlier but I just want you to know one thing:
your post is driving me to suicide and as of yesterday,
this is punishable offense:

If you wish saving yourself an  indictment,

cg, this is beyond any norms of civilized behavior (and I broke ALL of them!)...
I mind my own business on Options expirations Friday, drink light white and check my favorite wine board and BAMMM!!!

Here comes Jeff and threatens my life!

I am out of here, I heard Home Depot runs sale on ropes, I might need one soon if he doesn't apologise.

Jeff Novak, repeat after Archie:

9/5 and 9/6 in Seattle is the current plan that is gaining a lot of momentum.

Feds?

I always thought you were British.  (Unless, of course, the Feds are the Feds in Britain as well).

Your handle (and your cellar contents) conjure some combination of Holmes' Watson (though I believe he was only a Major) and my image of Montgomery in North Africa (which is much more the movie version than the real version).

Since I started all of this, I thought it was time I responded......again.  I first went back to the login page of the forum to see whether or not I understood the guidelines:

General Discussion
This is a new forum for general discussions about wine. Please, keep it clean, friendly and on-topic.

For the most part I think these guidelines are followed, or have been up until now.  Even Serge and I had a bit of a tif awhile back, but we kissed and made up.  Ewww.....well you get the idea.  Probably what happened is he and I neither one cared enough to worry about what the heck we were at odds over and let it drop.

I certainly wasn't trying to offend anyone with the initial posting.  I was giving a tongue-and-cheek observation to which one person took an over-the-top offense to.  And, in my opinion, he made a bigger butt of himself with the latest comments, which fired me up.  But then I read comments from the real contributors of the forum who made me laugh (Serge) and distracted me (Colonel) and I thought, "Who cares what this guy says?"  Let us all move on and have a good time.  Obviously my opinion on notes is my opinion (and it is right by the way ) so we know opinions are like..................souls.  Everyone has one.

By the way cgrimes, since I share the same first name as novak, I'd appreciate it if we didn't substitute my name with expletives!  (Although I'm sure my wife has done it before).

Amen.

Oh my you are right!  We'll have to coin another term for cyber rage.  The Sniglets guide would surely address this issue.  Remember them?  Please don't show my post to your wife.  I'm afraid these terms may be used against you--and completly out of context.  I'll also apologize to all the other Jeffs of the world for any unintended harm!

I would concur with Eric on Jeff.  Though I often ignore his threads on another forum I did meet him in person and he didn't hit me....not even once!     By all accounts from those I know who have also spent time with him he is a nice guy.  Don't know why he refuses to be on forums.

Yes by all accounts Monty was a bit of a pr*t, but you know we Brits - always go for the loser (Rommel get's real good UK press!!).
I avoided the UK descriptors of policemen as they are not that flattering:
Tho Old Bill, Plod, Cops, Rozzers, Pigs, The Filth, Woodentops, Scum, Sweeney (yes as in Todd = Flying Squad).
The worldwide list is impressive too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_slang_terms_for_police_officers

I've noticed that Americans are generally respectful of Politicians and Policemen, whilst our position seems rather different - is that a true difference?

L.
I guess I could have used The Met, but that's just London.
