Ruby red. This pinot has massive earth/dirt tones on the nose and tongue. More subtle fruit [cherry]. A bit much for me. (22 views)

Massive petrol nose. I let it sit out overnight and it might be even stronger this morning. I had a bottle 6 months ago, that was good. Two more to try. Likely a bit too old for this wine. (16 views)

After removing the foil, I noticed mould on the cork that appeared to follow the cork all the way down into the bottle. I noticed kingofwine posted a similar note. I returned the bottle to the store, unopened. We took it in the back room, opened it and tasted it. It was light red and there were clear oxidation notes. They gave me a new bottle (checked the cork in the store) and this pour, although not inky, is fairly dark red in color. Hints of toffee, toast and berries on the nose. Very light, slightly watery mouth feel. Subtle strawberry, caramel, wood chips, cherry, acids and soft alcohol flavours. It still leaves a bit of tannins on the cheeks. I would love to have met this wine 5 years ago, when it surely had more fire. I am not sure how I should score a wine at the end of its life, especially when I have not seen it before, so I won’t. A pleasure for those who are interested. (24 views)

Haha, you're more than welcome! And if you time it correctly, you may even catch a few events

Seriously though - we've got a small but very active wine community here. And Singapore being a tiny nation (about half the size of New York City for example), if you are in one wine circle, you more or less get invovled in all of them at one time or the other. I think if you are diligent enough to look them up, there is one tasting event for almost every other day of the week, so much so that it is more a matter of picking and choosing rather than having to hunt one down.

Will have to let you know next time I visit - it's been a yearly visit for the last 3 - and hope there's an event on somewhere.  HK is similar in it's easy to get onto most mailing lists so for example there are 3 big events in the next 10 days and about 3 smaller wholesaler tastings.  Just have to balance the nights out with home life.

I had two 1998's last night.  Got home and a friend had brought a Penfolds Bin 407 round for dinner.

http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=17318

Then my wife wanted a glass and it was the 1998 Spatlese or a dessert wine so I pulled out the 1998 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese

Not bad for a 'school' night!

So the French tour continues. Had to take the train to Lyon from Paris today for meetings. Of course, that includes the obligatory two hour meal with wine and dessert and a local establishment. Enjoyed the 2006 Marcel Lapierre Morgon with perfectly cooked veal and mashed potatoes. I loved it. Not much on the nose but all earth and cherries in the mouth; crisp yet substantial enough to go perfectly with the brown sauce on the veal. Not much with regard to tannins and a modest finish. I could have drank another bottle by myself. Oh well, back to work.

Rainy night in Paris so I took a seat at the wine bar L'Ecluse on Place de Madeliene and put the time to good use:

2003 Le Criox de Beaucaillou (St. Julian) nice strong color, fruit on the nose, medium tannins and finish, somewhat light overall and perfectly suitable for drinking right now; 9.50€ for 10cl...well worth it

2001 Chateau de Valois (Pomerol) - reasonable color but utterly forgettable; I tried so hard to smell something, to taste something, anything, and in the end, nothing; 6.70€

1996 Chateau Sigognac (Medoc) - losing color, not much on the nose, some cherry on the palate, not particularly noteworthy (didn't bother recording the price but probably around 6€

2002 Pressac (St. Emilion) - winner, winner chicken dinner...fruit forward, beautiful color, robust cherries with some vanilla, really pleasant -- around 7€

2001 Charmont (Marguax) - great color and chocolate aroma but disappointing with re:to taste; didn't live up to the nose -- around 7€

Overall, it's a great place. Highly recommend it. Perfect casual atmosphere; not crazy expensive; had a nice salad and beef carpaccio; great service. Highly recommend.

pbm,

I am very jealous reading all these French posts.  Even though it is 8 in the morning here, I now fancy a glass of wine in a Parisian bar.

By the way, I had a look at the receipt from our dinner the other day.

We had the following wines:

Vega Infante
Gaja
Foradori
Pattacum

plus of cours the extra glass of that paint-stripper wine.

I can't even remember the Foradori.  No wonder I could hardly walk.

Tried a 2005 Bodega Norton Privada  vs 2005 Wyndham Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 444 head to head.
Looking for an alternative to my ubiquitous Norton.
The 444 didn't quite make it, although I can imagine the rounder/smoother taste may appeal to some.
I think I'm conditioned - it was NP by a short head.
Both pleasantly quaffable.
L.

PS  Why don't wines need serious bottle age any more?

Colonel - you should post that last question as a new thread - I'm sure there could be quite a few opinions on that.

Domaine des Perdrix Nuits St George 2003.  Wonderful, deep, brooding wine.  If you are in the UK you can pick it up from some Tesco stores - £27.

Wrighty - definately get hold of it if you can.   You can buy a lot worse wines for £27

I know it is a bit like admitting your are in league with satan, but Tesco's are actually selling some good wines these days.

For the US people on this forum, Tescos is a cross between Wal-Mart and the dark prince of death and Osama Bin Laden.

Paul - I worked for Tesco in my youth and apart from the HR manager who screwed up a promotion (not bad for a 16 year old student - me not her) they were OK to work for.

Also think they took some unfair stick, our local store has had the good wine for several years as has the one in Swindon.  Certainly the Pedrix and Alsace has been there for 2 or 3 vintages as has Vergelegen I believe.

And remember I work in retail and these people aren't good for diversity, but for a consumer...........so the comparison to Walmart is a little unfair

And I'm drinking lovely dregs!

My usual Sileni Sauv Blanc saved in a half bottle from a couple of nights ago. The first glass out of the bottle was fresher than the last glass the other night (I decanted half straight away) so can recommend this as a good way to save wine.

The last glass of a bottle of Finca y Bodega Carlos Pulenta Corte C Vistalba  which was much better after a day sat in the kitchen

And then while I finish on the forum and watch a bit of Jamie Oliver a glass of my old house favourite, Battle of Bosworth.

Wrighty - just drinking a 2006 Cullen Red, which i guess is their bottom of the range wine.  It was 10 quid from Waitrose -Cab Sav/Merlot/Malbec/Petit Verdot

Not bad - a kind of sweet, crunchy peppery taste.

I wouldn't want to be anyone's supplier at the moment!

I've had an evening of disappointing diversity!

Started with 2008 Trout Valley Pinot Noir which was woody water with a hint of wine, followed by 2006 Domaine du Roncée Chinon which was promoted in the supermarket as one of the best producers in the Loire by Jancis Robinson and was like drinking from a pewter mug and then 2003 Domaine de Coyeux Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise which had too much alcohol for the weight of the wine but a lovely nose.

I think I'm going to go back to the Battle of Bosworth to watch the football.

Dont talk to me about disappointment.  Last night I had a 97 Gloria which was great.  Then had a corked 99 Burgundy, then opened a La Pointe 2000 which was too young so i left it over night and now it is dead.  so I then opened a Pontet-Canet 97 and that was corked.  Then opened a Hermitage and that was corked too.

It is all well and good buying these older wines but I am not sure where Davy's keep their stock but it would appear they stick them at the bottom of the River Thames.

As for the footy - a dull 2-0 win is my prediction.

I watched the first half, thought better of staying up any later watching boring football and finishing of the bottles so went to bed.  Missed the decent football but at least woke up feeling human!

Some pretty okay plonk - if that actually means anything:

2007 De Bortoli Willowglen (Australia, New South Wales, Big Rivers, Riverina)
14/10/2008
Paul S
86

At Cafe de Amigo. This was obviously made for the mass production market. Given what it is, while not good, it was not bad either. The nose was rather off putting, lots of rather sulphury, funky smells swirling around a mix that showed savoury meat, wet earth, wet dog and lots of candied blackcurrant sweets. The palate was a lot more palatable. Sweet, candied, lots residual sugar of showing in berry tones with a liittle tang of soury acid at the end. Some sprtizy cola and a woody accent rounded this simple wine off.

I just drank...crap...2006 Bodegas Olivares Monastrell Altos de la Hoya Finca Hoya De Santa Ana

I've opened three bottles over the last month or so and can come to only one conclusion: this wine is horrible and the perfect example of why you can't always trust Gary V (or any retailers opinion for that matter.) It was supposed to be one of those all time great QPRs...which it would be if it were cough syrup. Unfortunately, it's not labeled as such and mis-promoted as wine one should drink. The alcohol on the nose was overwhelming. The alcohol in the mouth was overwhelming. I couldn't even get to the finish because I was shoveling food into my mouth as quickly as possible to dampen the taste. I guess the good news is that if gas prices keep going up this wine is a suitable competitor to ethanol. Sure, you can decant and let it open up but come on, it's a $9 bottle of wine. It's meant to be popped, poured, and enjoyed. Even decanting an hour didn't help much. It does have nice color but that just heightens the eventual disappointment. Stay away. Stay far away. (To be fair, the Wine Library has often made excellent recommendations and hosted a great tasting event last night so I don't mean to issue a 100% denunciation of them. They just called this one very, very, wrong.)

Sunday, my brothers, nephews and I bottled some family wine.  While doing the work we enjoyed:
1999 Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi,  2005 Orin Swift The Prisoner,  2004 Vinum Cellars Slow Lane Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2003 Campo Viejo Gran Reserva Rioja.  Quintarelli really knows how to make the best wine.  Orin Swift is great after decanting. Slow Lane was O. K.  Rioja was smooth; excellent.
