2005 Garretson - Viognier (late harvest) ... damn shibby sha-bam!  this wine is good!

The Garretson Roussanne 2004 was exceptional, and I almost never say that about white wines.

I tormented myself last night with a 2003 Heron Merlot California.  I'm on a mission to clean out the not so good/great unknown stuff before the end of the year.  I've found a couple of decent bottles in the mix, this wasn't one of them.

TN:

Not much nose.  Popped and poured and got nothing but a mouthful of wood.  Lots of swirling and a good hour in the glass and it finally began to open up to reveal hints of dark fruits coming from under the oak.   Poorly balanced.  Pass on this one.

So any tips for how to actually acquire some? Doesn't come up as available anywhere on Wine-Searcher.

Have me buy it for you from the local shops or come out and visit me and I'll take you to the local shop, or even the vineyard itself.  :)

Paul,

What an incredible combination of wine selections and food. I'd like to meet the person by whose standards it was not an exceedingly good night.

Paul - Yes, suprisingly it was and we left Australia alone, as well as a couple of other tables!  I wasn't planning on going to start as I didn't think there was a broad choice.  Glad I was persuaded otherwise and glad I left the other tables out of it.  As normal no truely stunning wines presented but some good top end stuff which doesn't always make it out in public so no complaints.

Wrighty

Holy crap that is a lot of wine to taste.  You must have hardly been able to walk after all those wines.  You dont strike me as the kind of boy who spits (so to speak).

No, I do spit but not that night.  I only realised how many wines we'd got through when I posted the notes.  The pours where larger than normal so some went in the spittoons (which were narrow necked vases which meant it would be difficult to spit anyway).  Saturday was a little fuzzy!

Apart from dinner with Paul, the Decanter tasting as well!

http://www.cellartracker.com/event.asp?iEvent=6206

Loved the Diamond Creek and the Cos tasting was a good end to the day.  And for those interested in 'technic' spitting on the general tasting (apart from the Diamond Creek) and half and half for the Cos.

The trick is to eat lots of food and spit out all the less than top-class stuff. Very difficult on the night - almost every wine was gorgeous.

There are quite a few SCM pinots that provide tremendous value.  The 2005 McHenry is sublime.  I have also enjoyed the 2005's from Windy Oaks.

A couple of Italian wines at my weekly wine tasting club. Both were from my cellar, so no blind tasting for me this week:

http://www.cellartracker.com/event.asp?iEvent=6249

One ripasso and one Campanian wine (Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio). The ripasso was overly oaky, and I have now started using the term "oak bomb" for such wines... The other wine was quite delicious.

2004 Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico for dinner with NY strips - steaks excellent, wine fairly good but somewhat overpowered by the meat, see full TN on CT. Planning an aged super tuscan with Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night, Sassicaia we had last year was superb and this one probably won't be quite in that same class.

Never got the Masseto.  Was at a vertical tasting several years ago (? one of the wine speculator events) and this confirmed my palate.
I have friends here in Austin that jones over every bottle available, but on a PQR, this is one wine that I could never pony up the $$ for.
Thought that this would be a good analogy for PP.
I get the concept, though ... my wine buddy here who loves Masseto is pure class and a great palate (far superior to mine).
Hence the wonder of the juice ... you like what you like.

tac i like all kinds of wine............but there are some I love to drink around the holidays with my family.............today is one of the days we're we open some special bottles.  We will be opening two 1945 Mouton's at some point............we gave them to my son last night when we arrived and his face just lit up.  This morning while watching the Macy's parade we got into a fight about the wine.............should we drink it with dinner or drink it by itself...............it was not really a fight.  My hubby is going to video tape the opening................and the drinking.  We are in the process of opening the bottles now for decanting and drinking later tonight.

i just got the pix from my son and put the 45 empty label that was soiled and rated a 92 on the CT TN for it.
