The last few bottles sampled: 2004 Meo-Camuzet Bourgogne Rouge (struck me as rather decent; bought a case recently) 2003 Moss Wood Cabernet/Merlot Ribbon Vale(great fruit but I found the tannins a little drying). Would like to try more wines from this producer. This evening I'll drink a 2002 Volnay Vieilles Vignes from Nicolas Potel. Very pleasant fruit forward (for Burgundy) style when I last sampled it! Strikes me as being a good value? Happy drinking!

"Freres" of course means "brothers" in French, hence the Humbert brothers. I have tried their Bourgogne and the Gevrey Village, both of which were really, really good. The 1er Crus are sitting in the cellar waiting for their time. However, I hear that quality gets better and better as you up the chain.

Inspired by the recent threads on Burgundy as well as an old thread on minerality, I tasted side by side a Chablis and a Chassagne-Montrachet. Both were very good [:)], certainly very different to any white wines I've had before!

Haha, certainly seems that way. Next in line, some Chablis from Reveneau and Dauvissat, and a couple of Chassagne-Montrachet from Ramonet and Leflaive. Will not murder your pocket book if you stay away from their high-end wines, but worth a try to see the step up in quality.

Jayson is Pahlmeyer's second label, pretty good stuff though your rating on the 2004 is on target. Their standard line is twice as expensive but not necessarily twice as good, though definitely better. keep an eye out for 2005! Their pinot noir debutted in 2005 and is lovely, 2005 Merlot has been released but their proprietary red will be out in September last time I checked DGW

The sad thing is that I have twice driven through the Burgundy area, but didn't stop (had a schedule to keep), but happily, I will most likely be driving through there again in the future. [:)]

Problem with Burgundy is that most of the producers will not see you unless you make an appointment ahead of time. After that comes the language problem - the younger generation generally speak English, haltingly or not. However, much of the older generation ofwine makers are Fench speaking. After you cross that barrier, you face the most difficult challenge, getting them to sell you their wines. You either 1. have to be a pretty young girl; or 2. beg, beg and beg.

By the way, I just drank.... too much bad wine at a retailer's wine sale / tasting. You are welcome to check out my notes for 28/6/2008 under User #44749, but you'll probably find a constant spiel of rather gruff and unhappy TNs.

Decided to have a glass of Columbia crest Grand estates Merlot 2001 while on the deck, went down very nice, flavorful and the alcohol was not overpowering. Think that was my last bottle of 01.. Will finish the rest with dinner..

Great sadness - opened a 2007 Jackson Estate Sauv Blanc and thought it was a Gewurztraminer, then pulled out a 1999 Bava Barolo Contrabasso di Castiglione Falletto and although OK with food went downhill. Am thinking of heading back to the fridge for a 3rd bottle. The sink could be drunk tonight!

Ohhh... Italian whites from Alto Adige - great hit and miss region. Here's my rather too-long winded note on the Clos des Papes 3 hours on from the first pour and decant. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=31665 . What a lovely wine. Sorry to hear about your woes Wrighty, but we have our good days and bad days all. I think I am due this after my fair share of Bordeaux Blanc / Plonk and other nonsense at my wine retailer's rather rubbish sales / tasting on Saturday.

Had a delightful '04 OR Pinot last night with dinner, Zelko "Z'ivo" Pinot Noir. Balanced fruit and a nice perfumy nose.

I was pleasantly surprised by the 2004 Valley of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon. It had several interesting qualities at an entry level price.

Had it with friends yesterday at the one and only authentic Chinese restaurant in South Florida - great juice, bought 6 bottles of it today, the best New Zealand SB on the market today, IMHO

Hello Paul S, I really like this wine but find that it's somewhat closed for a few years. It needs time I think. His Watervale bottling is delicious and drinks much earlier. I sampled the 2005 recently; can still taste it! Happy drinking!

Ah well - I was deciding between the two bottlings and decided to try the more vaunted one. There's always a next time. In the meantime, I have two bottles of 2001 Howard Park riesling waiting to try. I must tell you, I am trying to open my mind here, but I still find German and Alsatian Riesling way ahead of the rest of the field.

Paul, Am a big fan of Aussie riesling but have never understood the Grosset Polish Hill. Would say closed and chalky. Have an 01 I think sitting waiting to age to try see if it needs ten years to start. Would recommend Seppelt's Drumborg and Jacob's Creek Steingarten instead. Wrighty
