Wrighty -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/5/2008 11:15:45 PM)

Had a disappointing night yesterday was hoping for great things from a 1994 Lafite and a 1997 S.L.V. but neither were memorable so had to open a 1998 Yquem to rescue the evening.  Looks good on paper but only the Yquem was worth it.

Colonel Lawrence -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/5/2008 11:32:24 PM)

Not quite as expensive a disappointment as you, but last night I drank a 2004 The Coppermine Road and while it was OK it wasn't that special.  I've been working my way through (lowest to highest price) the dÁrenberg wines and was expecting this to be a mini watershed.  Looks like the Dead Arm has to save the day, perhaps Maestro will choose it for August (2005?) Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 3:10:45 AM)

ooh... saw your note on the 1998 D'Yquem, it made my day. Going to pop one soon.

Wrighty -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 9:38:42 AM)

Not my best notes (hope they don't get posted on the forum) but needed something to lift the evening, having had high hopes. Unfortunately the only bottle I had. Had a couple of interesting Pinots tonight.

One was given as a thank you at a wedding (2002 Hickinbotham Family Reserve) and the couple were round for dinner so opened, the other was also from down in Victoria (2002 Bannockburn)and got better towards the end of the night - can't quite get into the Pinot, too many misses and no real hits, but keep dipping the toe.

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 10:04:35 AM)

Good Burg is your answer my friend.

I just had lots of aged Piedmontese wines - Gavi, Roero Arnies, Moscato d'Asti, Barolo, Babaresco, Dolcetto d'Alba and Babera d'Asti amongst others at a Piedmont dinner. Got most of them from a private collector from Malaysia who needed to clear his cellar. Lovely for the large part. Too lazy to post my notes here though, although the are on the main CT site.

apes -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 12:41:22 PM)

Been out of touch with the forum for awhile, but most recently drank (no formal notes)

2005 Vincent Girardin Chambolle-Musigny good

2005 Alain Michelot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Champs Perdrix (excellent and only double mark up at a restaurant)

rjonas -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 1:02:22 PM)

apes -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 1:16:20 PM)

Forgot I drank this one

2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor Drank with steak, what else?, Too young, too hot, too heavy, smoked fruit and oak. try again in a couple of years.

Maestro -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 3:26:58 PM)

A lovely Barbaresco.

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/6/2008 11:42:35 PM)

Lots of Piedmont - decided to put my notes up after all after seeing Maestro's Barbaresco: http://www.cellartracker.com/event.asp?iEvent=5385

Maestro -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/7/2008 12:27:34 AM)

Wow Paul, you guys had some real fun...

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/7/2008 7:16:29 AM)

Haha - yes, we certainly did! I was rathe worried about the storage of some of the older wines, especially the 1990 Barbera d'Asti, as well as the quality of the producers. Dezzani is something of an unknown quantity here. Everything turned out great though. My wine buddy and I went down early to taste the wines and make sure everything was okay before the dinner we were both utterly surprised at the freshness and all round quality of the wines - big grin once we had gone through the bottles.

Less happy news, drinking a 1997 Rosemount now. Not enjoying it. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=61024

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/8/2008 9:18:01 AM)

I seem to be spamming this thread. Just had an Anwilka 2006. Big fan of Bruno Prats when he was at Cos d'Estournel and Buoard at Angelus, so I thought I must try this one. Turn out to be interesting, but not mind-blowing. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=341725

Wrighty -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/10/2008 7:50:22 AM)

A Woodland Chardonnay 2005.  A little early but need a good wine after the day at work and will probably be limtied next week while on holiday in Malaysia.

I'm glad I opened it, it's lifted the spirit.

Wrighty

Rak -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/10/2008 3:56:51 PM)

Taking a break from the pinot noir mistress and enjoying a 2004 Macon-Vergisson, La Roche from Daniel and Martine Barraud. Crikey, fruit (yes, lovely) but what persistent minerality!

Pinot tomorrow.....

2005 Columbia Crest Two Vines Vineyard 10...one of my favorites for a mid-week dinner off the grill. It was a cool evening so it wasn't overpowering relative to the weather. Had over the course of several hours. In addition to the variety of tastes as reflected in the CT Notes below, the finish is quite enjoyable - reasonably long and a hint of fizzle which I liked though it may not suit most people. If anyone knows of a more enjoyable red that I can easily get my hands on in the NJ/PA region at this price ($7) please let me know -- quickly.

CT Notes

Serge Birbrair -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/11/2008 5:00:24 AM)

1988 Château La Mission Haut-Brion
not bad but not a mind buggler and definately is not worth $145 I paid for it last year.

Colonel Lawrence -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/11/2008 7:48:07 AM)

Caliterra 2006 Carmenere Reserva. (14.5%)
Alongside the infamous Norton Privada (on Pizza night).
I liked it!
Maybe as much as the NP, although wife (remember good taste buds) still preferred the NP.
In fact I got most of the bottle [image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s3.gif[/image]
Went well with 'Knocked Up'.

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/11/2008 9:14:35 AM)

A Cava that is absolutely ridiculously good value. Hunt it down if you can, pour it blind, and I guarantee you no one will come even close to guessing the price range http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=32962

Also, the Vieux Donjon 2001. I found it really good - wonder what John Gilman has to say about this vintage. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=5607

Rak -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/11/2008 10:44:10 AM)

This evening it's the turn of a splendid staple wine; 2002 Bruno Clair Marsannay, Les Longeroies. Dashed good value.

I have a question chaps. A little while ago (on another discussion thread?) many people, including Paul S and the good Colonel, spoke highly of the d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz. I'm probably going to buy the 2005 on the strength of your praise. I did think of contrasting this with another Australian 'blockbuster'; the Stonewall Shiraz from Peter Lehmann. Is this a worthwhile comparison? The Stonewalls choice is between the 2001 or 2002. Any views CTs?

Happy drinking!

You won't find me speaking of personal experience of Dead Arm.
Sadly I've never tried it.
I own 2004 and 2005 - bought, based on what seemed intelleigent reasoning, essentially on how well others rated it, versus the price I could get it for.
eg.  Dead Arm 2005 $52 95RP: Haut Brion 2003 $383 95RP.
You may be able to argue with the points, but it does look interesting.
I was also at a loss as to what Bordeaux was worth the prices they were asking.
Still hopeful I'll enjoy it, although the dÁrenberg's I've drunk so far have left me underwhelmed. [image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s12.gif[/image]

Rak,
I have had other D'Arenberg wines and thought they were average. At a recent wine tasting I had a chance to sample the 2005 D'arenberg Dead Arm and thought it was fantastic. I purchased three bottles.

P.S. Where are you from??

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/12/2008 1:10:28 AM)

I have quite a few vintages of the Dead Arm, and I think it consistently gives really great value. The 2001 is a stand-out year, the 2002 should be skipped, I skipped the 2003 as well. Loved the 2004, and have had quite a few bottles of 2005. I find it hard to choose between the later. But if your prefer more sturture and acid, than you will love the 2005.

Have a bottle of Peter Lehmann Stonewell 2002 stashed away somewhere. However, people in the know (i.e. Aussies who love their un-jammy Shirazes) have told me that it is usually a wine built for the long-haul and should not be touched until at least 2012. I find the Dead Arm far earlier drinking, especially for soft vintages like 2002 and perhaps 2004. I think the 2005 may benefit from a wee bit more time in the bottle, although I think you will have no complaines opening one now.

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/12/2008 1:26:12 AM)

By the way Rak, I forgot to add that Bruno Clair is an excellent producer who has been very consistent in my experience. Try some of his high end bottles like the Clos de Beze, they may be a touch less refined and accomplished than his illustrious neighbours wines from the same vineyard, like Rosseau and Jadot, but they can be had at a fraction of the price. Age them 10-15 years and they are beautiful.

With the Stonewell, I would go for 2002 anytime. Great vintage in Barossa, especially with the old vines. 2001 is a solid vintage as well, but some of the 2002s I have tried are knockouts, with the winemakers I have met from that area purring about them.

Glad to hear the Dead Arm is better, I was getting worried having demolished a couple of bottles of each of four other d'Arenberg wines (all too young of course).

Paul S -> RE: I Just Drank ............ (7/12/2008 10:07:26 AM)

Good night today. Had a couple of decent bottles:

Howard Park Riesling 2001 (on my Australian dry Rieslings phase - I think some of them can beat the daylights out of German Trockens at half the price) http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=341688
