Status: offline 		That is very interesting Paul.  I have been buying these in ones and twos because I did not have any knowledge of ageability.  I have had some others that are very good especially the Seppelt Riesling from my pre CT days.

Status: offline 		2001 Finca Sandoval. Satrted a little funky then licorice. Hours later that blew off to more fruit, still dry but smooth.

There has been quite a lot of hype surrounding these drier Riesling styles recently, both the Australian version as well as the Trockens coming out of Germany, so I decided to try a few of the most reputed Aussie ones very recently like Knappstein, Grosset Polish Hill, Howard Park. I also have a bottle of Petaluma Hanlin Hill waiting to be popped. I find most of them to start of very food friendly and generally well-made wines, if a tad simple. Lots of bracing acidity. However, I also found that bottle-age does tone down the excess, trim the rough edges and add a layer or class and complexity. Given that most of them are in screw-cap now, they do seem to age pretty well while retaining that freshness which, to me, is one of their most important features.

However, call me a fuddy-duddy, but to my palate at least, these wines cannot hold a candle to the more traditional German styles, whether Kabinetts, Spatlesen or Auslesen. Not that they are bad though, just lacking the depth of complexity that a noble Riesling has.

Status: online 		Allow me to introduce an excellent meritage from.....Virginia. Rappahannock Cellars is a family owned (12 children help run the place) winery at the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. They make some excellent whites but this 2005 Bordeaux blend is absolutely wonderful. Smokey with a hint of tobacco and lingering berries it has a wonderfully subtle and long finish. One also gets hints of oak and vanilla but only after the wine has opened up. A refreshingly low 13.6 percent alcohol.

Status: offline 		My first bottle of Silver Oak 1994, alexander valley,  I have been sitting on these for 11-12 years now. Always wanted a good reason to open one of them.. Well  wifes surgery went well and is the best reason I can find to open it..


Great taste,  nice nose,  silky soft tannins, and the flavor lingered a while.. I am glad no one esle drinks wine in the house;; I will fiiish it tonight. pairing it with Pasta,,should go well..

"Fee, fife, foe, fumb, i drank the blood of an englishman"

Englishman was a bit salty and thick but it had a musky scent which really set off a primal thirst for more... i found that if I garggled for aprox 10sec before i swished, i could faintly make out the remenisence of a fine burley port. I couldn't get enough of this stuff... unfortunately one englishman, of average height and weight, can only fill aprox three cases worth. So next time you're up in the UK, drop by Jack's Green Stalk on the Isle of Man... ask to see the Wicker Man, he makes a mean grilled steak sandwich... tell him zippizoo sent ya and he'll throw in a case of englishman for free.

Status: offline 		Been reading a lot about Columbia crest  two vines red wine vineyard 10,, 2005,, decided to buy a bottle for $6-7 or so.. what a surprise,,
had it with grilled rib eye and was very tasty, heck of a bottle to keep around the house to pop and pour...will buy more.

Status: offline 		Just bought and popped  2005 The Lackey - Aussie Shiraz.

Its big and powerful but a bit all over the place - not refined. I wonder if it would calm down given 2-3 years in the cellar. Excellent value if you like big Shiraz.

I went to pick up the Drouhin (which we are going to taste in the August event) and the importer said, 'do you like Oregon PN? I have some Bergström available'.

I had never heard of Bergström, so I said 'no thanks, I'll just have the Drouhin'.

Then I came home, read this thread, investigated the wines, went back to the importer and grabed the Bergström.

I will wait until the bottle shock is over, but I am looking forward to tasting it.

2005 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Langhe Nebbiolo Starderi

7/18/2008: The wine down my valley, modern style Nebbiolo, concentrated, complex with lots of flowery notes, long finish and surprisingly mild tannins.
$23 price tag just makes this wine irresistable. Tomorrow I'll buy more. Aparently I liked it more than Tanzer, much more and I am glad Tanzer and Co keeps the price down with lower rankings.

I highly doubt it will disappoint you.  The 2006 de Lancellotti and the Whole Cluster selection (1/2 which comes from de Lancellotti, 1/2 from the Bergstrom  vineyards) were our favorites at our recent tasting at the vineyard.  If you haven't seen it yet here is the event note from my recent trip:  http://www.cellartracker.com/event.asp?iEvent=5421  It is much more complex than the Drouhin Willamette Valley (though the Drouhin Laurene cuvee is one of my favorites as well).  The de Lancellotti is good now but will settle down more if you age it for a few years.  You may just want to drink this in a few months to see if it is your style and may want to cellar more in the future.  Send me a note when you taste it.

I've always liked this producer, especially their various Barberas.

Couldn't agree more. (In fact I think I may have posted on this just a few weeks ago. I defy anyone to identify a better wine at this price that is as widely available in the US.

Wine Event envy

I had to settle with a very well-made 2007 OR Pinot Gris from Elk Cove.  Nice with grilled orange roughy.
