1998 McKenzie-Mueller Pinot Noir

Was prepared to be disappointed because of a slightly faded color. Certainly not the vibrant light red we've come to expect from M-M but then again this was 10 years old. Pleased to report that the aroma and taste did not disappoint. Very mellow cherries and mild general fruitiness made it a very pleasant accompaniment to grilled chicken. A world-class wine, no, but an enjoyable bottle nonetheless. One left in the cellar and it will be drunk soon.

Celebrated mutual 20-year anniversaries with good friends over a specially prepared chef's tasting menu at Anton's at the Swan in Lambertville, NJ. Highly recommend the venue, the food and atmosphere are superb.

2001 McKenzie-Mueller Pinot Noir
M-M just never disappoints. Compared with the 1998 we had last night, this wine practically danced out of the bottle to the glass and then to our mouths. Vibrant cherry and earthy yet refined -- not overwhelming of the salmon and creamed spinach at all.

2002 Beringer Private Reserve Cab
I was looking forward to this in part because of the recent CT discussions regarding Napa cabs. Decanted for less than an hour it was velvety on the tongue with slight fruit, slighter oak, and touch of vanilla on the nose. Nothing overwhelmed but I would call it a very harmonious glass of wine (meaning all the flavors and tastes seem to work very well together) that went excellent with the chicken course. Two observations: 1) I have trouble seeing how this will last another ten years but I may just not be skilled enough to perceive such things; and 2) had I paid standard retail or (god forbid) wine list mark-up for this wine I'd have been disappointed in the QPR. At $65 (thank you PA wine store) I'd judge the QPR as quite good.

1988 Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT
Decanted less than an hour. Amazingly fresh, aromatic, and balanced after twenty years. Strong color, not turning at all. Mellow earthiness with solid flavors of fruit and cherries. A very enjoyable wine though based on some of the other tasting notes perhaps just past the height of its flavors. I can't speak to the more recent super-tuscans but this certainly carried the flavors of Italy well. Nice complement to the lamb. No discussion of QPR here because we wanted a 20 year old bottle on our anniversary and this was it.

Well, my daughter who doesn't drink except on a rare occasion and is sampling more things now ordered a glass of

2005 Chalone Vineyard Chardonnay Estate at foxwoods (david Burke rest) and liked it. She bought a bottle at home ,( a first) and will consume it over a few days. I tried a sample, is pretty good, she doesn't do reds, but I think we can do better on chards as well. I haven't seen their wine cellar, but she took pictures and its looks pretty neat, goes up it looks like a few levels. I will check them out next time I go, and the food was very good and reasonable compared to cedars there.

Maestro,

Judging by your notes I wonder if you should add an asterisk that notes them as your first wines in two weeks!

2004 Domaine Moillard Beaune 1er Cru Epenottes

Good structure with cherry, mineral, some cola and a touch of cedar and spice and long finish.

I thought I was over Aussie Shiraz (with the exception of my rather beloved Dead Arm), but these two popped up, both fantastic, especially the later, which  is one of the most exciting Aussie wines I have had in a longish time.

You are all most welcome to visit me in our little tropical island. I have no choice but to turn to drinking, being isolated in this corner of the world, while the rest of you draw up grand plans for get-togethers.

Thanks for your offer.  I know it must be tough sequestered on an island.  This must be your prison cell    http://www.lesamis.com.sg/webtop/index2.html

BTW, their corkage fee is $55 so it must be even more prestigious than The French Laundry...

Very depressingly, quite a few of the top restaurants in Singapore (especially those that have made it into the World's Top 100 list) have corkages around there. Morton's of Chicago is the worse - charging $60 per bottle. At least Les Amis has a fantastic, if super-overpriced wine list. Morton's is nothing to shout about, and the wines are every bit as expensive, with a 100-200% mark-up. Very frustrating, especially with it being a steakhouse and all - I hate tucking into good beef without a good wine to go alongside.

A fair number of Burgundies http://www.cellartracker.com./event.asp?iEvent=5602

Am I the only person posting on this thread? I thought it was a great idea by the Colonel to introduce each other to new wines and share our experiences when he started this.

Feeling lonely, Paul?
After a week of night call (and unfortunately also dry, dry), I have a short clinic and then off to French Lunch Club.  I usually bring red and white CdP, so am leaning towards an older Beaucastel V.V. and maybe a '95 Rouge.  Something to look forward to after a difficult week.  I can almost taste it now ...

Chris - I am a great fan of the Almaviva as well. Only the 2002 has disappointed. I'm glad you also liked the Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel Rouge. I think it is one of the most value for money Rhone blends on the market. I am still at my 2003s though.

esb - Your note was right up my alley! I have an order of the same wine coming in. Really looking forward to it. This is one of the best non-reserva Chianti Classicos from 2004 that I have tried. Modern, yet with enough hints of traditional CC.

And finally, Tacman - I'm really looking forward to seeing your TNs on those wines if any. Sounds yummy. And yes, it is good to have some company here

Back from the front.
Haven't been far away, just felt I needed a break from the Forum.
It started to feel more a chore than a pleasure - and that's when you know you need a change.
But have been busy in other ways, so now need to remember which threads to join in on: gave up reading all the posts a little while back.
Probably start on this one!

I hear you and will probably do the same after the Seattle event.  Lately the posts have been more about conspiracy theories than wine anyway.
