How did you remember and what did you drink while it sat in the decanter?

My brain must have a safe-store for moments of lucidity that retains tasting notes.  What did we drink while it was decanting?  Meths, I seem to rememeber.  Or it may have been paint stripper.  Whatever it was,  when we went back to drink the Gaja it was like being massaged all over by a young, nubile Scandanavian godess in comparison to kicked in the nuts by an Irish rugby player.

It was very young in Feb and starting to mature in May.  Guess the pace they're being drunk it doesn't have a life of more than a year so ageing appropriately.

And if it keeps getting better why don't the scores?

True, although evoking the image of an Irish rugby player gives the image a more rustic, agricultural and rough feel to it.   Just like the wine in question.

From reading his tasting notes, this guy drinks fantastic wines. How he get his other information and note writing inspiration.......is a different story.

2002 Greenock Creek Shiraz Roennfeldt Road
Heavy nose of dark fruit, tar, dark chocolate and syrup. Super full-bodied wine, sweet, dense, Wowww...tighter than a nun's asshole. A bit salty finished. Powerful wine and not my type.

J2K odly enough after reading your post, this was posted about a wine I have.  At least he left it to the imagination ... right?

2005 Château Boyd-Cantenac (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux)

Tasted by XXXXX on 30/09/2008 & rated 89 points: Beautiful texture, but I fully concur with keith's assessment directly below. A surprisingly uniform and predictable Bordeaux formula--surprising given that this is still a family-owned vineyard. Tight as a nun's ... even on the second day, and really too young to judge. The court sits this one out for another ten years. (59 views)

Ya, check this note, just a typical night for him.

1982 Château Léoville Las Cases (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien)
My 3rd bottle and this is a little bit young...perfect condition from the cellar in Switzerland. The best Las Cases ever made. The 100/100 aftertaste but for me, 2nd Growth is 2nd Growth.

This time I taste it along with Lafite 1976, Mouton 1983, 1985, Cheval Blanc 1994, Lafleur 1995, etc.

This wine is overpriced at this moment. The best of Las Cases never get better than Big 8 of Bordeaux.

For 2nd Growth, First we try, then we trust.

For 1st Growth, First we trust, then we try.

As same as LEROY...always 1st Growth quality.

Drink 2009 - 2025 ( for prefect condition )

2006 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley (Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley)
Tasted by **** *** on 27/9/2008 & rated ** points: New World Wine Experience 2008 (Crystal Wines): Purple black beauty. Classy style with an aristocratic air. Generously diffusing generous scents of plums, spice cake and caramelised dark soy sauce with drops of vanilla. The palate is rather tight though. It was really hard to get past the succulent black fruits but I did get some white pepper and the spicy finish. Definitely a big wine, it still shows restraint. Therefore, unlike some of its barossa cousins, it is big but possesses the royalty of stature to carry through without being in your face. Clean acid structure with firm tannins prove this as a keeper. 88 + ??? for me. (90 views)

A good review and fairly positive - but surely more than an 88?

Alex Han, who wrote the note on Amon-ra, is a good friend of mine and my drinking buddy. We were tasting the Amon-Ra side by side actually. He just works on a slightly different scale. 88 is a really high score on his scale - I think a lovely Figeac 1978 only got 90 points. We both generally agreed on the Amon-Ra, but my note reads like this:

27/9/2008 rated 94 points: Crystal Wines New World Experience 2008 (Valley Point, Singapore): This one really stood out from amongst all the other Aussie Shiraz in terms of quality and breed for me today - I'm glad that I have another bottle tucked away safely. Dark, dark purple. Really concentrated and intense on the nose, with plums, spiced cake, and caramelised dark soy notes with a little twist of bramble along with a wafting vanilla note. Just a whiff of alcohol mixed in there somewhere. Really concentrated and weighty on the palate, which showed lots of plum and super-ripe blackcurrant, but also meat, pepper and spice. Everything was in perfect balance though. This was by far the wine with the best structure amongst all those that we tasted. Superb structure in fact, with firm, yet super-well formed tannins and round, juicy acidity giving the wine a wonderful backbone. Finish was really, long with a nice savoury turn. Everything was just in the right place - very seamless and complete. In spite of the intense flavours, I still got a sense that there was a whole lot more coiled up tensely like a spring, waiting for time to unwind into a full panapoly of different smells and flavours. Not my usual style, but this was so good nonetheless, and will continue to get better with time.

Paul - read through a lot more of Alex's notes last night and realised that an 88 is a good score.  A great collection of notes (and wines) and added Alex as a favourite authour.  Was wondering where he was based.

Funny tonight I came across his notes and was amused by "Smell of sweat from a horse that eats nothing but green bell peppers..."  Not an intro that would sell a wine to me.

But, he goes on to say, " I like the greenness exuding from the wine with mineral spice. Dry smooth tannins ending in a clean finish. The reason why Bordeaux wines are special…this middle-aged dame is al dente with its show of fruit, alcohol and tannins. Lovely. y "

Great Note.  He's going on my list as well.

So you don't like 100% new oak I guess.
85-99 spread across 35 tastings - pretty wide.
Paul S rather rated it.
These are my suppliers notes (he has a down to earth approach)
"A deeper shade of purple than the black eyes we gave each other fighting over who took the sample bottle home, this is a truly prodigious Amon-Ra from Ben Glaetzer. Now in its sixth vintage, all three of us feel that this is the greatest Amon-Ra yet produced. Yes, to paraphrase Mandy Rice-Davies, we would say that wouldn't we, but if you had been here when we opened the sample bottle that arrived last month, you would have witnessed such scenes of rejoicing that you might have thought we'd just heard that Lesley Garrett had retired. It's an absolute stunner, made entirely from old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz (some vines as old as 120 years), it is aromatically complex and expressive thanks to the long growing-season, with a gorgeous uplift of perfumed, creamy blackcurrants interwoven with vanilla and subtle, peppery szechuan spices. The palate is delectably succulent and seductive, married to a purity and finesse that maintains its elegance, so that it never feels over-extracted or jammy, despite the wealth of fruit. It's an immensely well-groomed wine, clad in 100% new oak (80% French, 20% American for 15 months), which imparts the seductive chocolate and vanilla flavours, adding complexity and intrigue. The tannins are fine-grained and manifest and promise to support the wine during its long evolution in tandem with the juicy blackberry acidity. Ben intimated to us that Robert Parker had thoroughly enjoyed the 2006s, which is never a bad thing. We look forward, with anticipation, to his review."
Hope it's not as bad when I open mine.
Cheers,
L.
