Yeah that is all that I could dig up as well.  I guess I'm just going to have to order 11 more bottles of some other stuff from them as well otherwise it would be a shame to order just one bottle.  That is my excuse anyway.

Considering ordering a few bottles of the Apalta itself in the case. It usually shows extremelly well.

How long does this wine usually need in the cellar?  I'm finding it quite hard to judge Chilean wines and aging potential - usually I go by the tannins, acidity and the body of the wine.  With these kind of wines you tend to have low tannins and really full on fruits.  Any suggestions?

Paul,

This is the only wine from this tasting that I had before (I mean, same wine same vintage). You can read my tasting note on CT -- it was drinking very well after 40 minutes of aeration, and I reckoned it still has about 5-6 years of great drinking ahead.

I don't have a lot of experience with Chilean wines either, so I could be quite wrong, though...

I tell you what, I'll buy 300 bottles and drink one a week until they run out to see how they age.  What can possibly go wrong?

In terms of Chilean wine aging, I've bought a few decent bottles for about 10-15 GBP and after a couple of years they were flabby and gloopy.  I would expect for 40 quid this wine would have 10 years plus.  The problem is, as wine making techniques improve and all these south american wines improve there is no real reference to how they will age.

Rats! I will be traveling for the entire VT.  I guess I could either taste in advance and then post when I arrive home - or taste after I get home  but then my TN COULD be skewed by the VT.....

Seems like all the wines are easy to obtain in the NY area. 

When I was in Ecuador earlier this year - the Clos Apalta was the sommelier first choice for a "regional" selection - but then he ran out of it and gave a second suggestion of Montes Alpha Purple Angel.  Bought some of the Clos Apalta (different vintage) and was just waiting for a reason to try........

I think I will try all four BFORE the VT and just post when I get home....I don;t want to miss out on ALL the fun....

I think we should look at each one of the wines we are going to taste.

So we start with the Langhe Nebbiolo 2006 from Produttori del Barbaresco [image]http://www.produttoridelbarbaresco.com/graf/langhe.jpg[/image].

Even though this wine is made by Produttori del Barbaresco (a large cooperative of producers in Barbaresco) from vineyards in the Barbaresco DOCG area, it is not a Barbaresco (i.e., it is not a Barbaresco DOCG), but it is declassified as a Langhe DOC.

Between 10 and 30% of the Nebbiolo harvested by the Produttori gets declassified every year and made into this wine. This allows them to sell it young (the Barbaresco 2006 is not due to release until 2009/2010) and at a more affordable price point. The Produttori call it a "second label", and select grapes from younger vines or from plots that had a less-than-perfect vintage. They claim that it does have what it takes to be a Barbaresco, but that they declassify it in order to "sell it younger and maintain the Barbaresco quality as high as possible".

This wine, however, is a wine that I buy every year and look forward to tasting. Why? Because it gives you a sure shot preview on the quality of the vintage in the Barbaresco area, and to a certain degree on the Barolo too.

If this wine shows well (in the 85-88 score range), than the vintage is good-to-great. If this wine shows poorly (79-82) you know not to bother about the region in that vintage. And in the mid-range 83-85 it is too close to call.

The producers in Piedmont claim that 2006 was a good vintage. We shall now find out...

Hey Maestro,

I've been thinking, was there a specific reason why no whites were included in the voting process? (and forgive me if I am wrong on this as I am not 100% familiar with all the wines listed, and I'm just too lazy to click through them all to see if any are white)

Perhaps next time we should single out some whites and choose one to include?  Just a thought...

By the way, thanks for organizing all this.  It will be an interesting event.

I thought about it but the sheer complexity of finding wines that everyone could get a hold of made me think that sticking to reds-only would be easier.

Maybe we can do a whites tasting afterwards.

I hope we get a volunteer to host a new tasting in October (I figured we skip September as we alerady have the offline then). If not, I'll do it again... [8D]

It is also the only one of the four wines that probably does not stand much of a chance to score in the 90+ range during the tasting. What we have here is the bottom 10-30% of the Produttori's juice. In a good year that is still pretty darn good, but my expectation is that it will show in the 86-89 range.

Still, usually great QPR.

ooo, away for a couple of weeks and look what happens! A VT on CT... [:)] I would be able to take part during the dates, but none of the wines are available in Finland! And I'll be away for the next couple of weeks, so ordering over the internet is not really an option (the wines will sit and get cooked in the post office). Oh well, I am going to southern France in the beginning of August, perhaps I will find one of the wines there.

I was trying to be funny, but failed miserably[image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s7.gif[/image]  I agree that we should choose an order for tasting the wines.  Maybe someone here has experience with these wines and can make a recommendation.

Domaine Drouhin

Casanova de Neri
Clos Apalta

Generally in order from what I would believe to be the lightest body to fullest body.

As to the aging of the Chilean wine, these wines generally need 5-7 years to have all of their secondary traits show.  I am basing this on the evolution of the 2001 Concha y Toro Don Melchor.  I would assume that this wine would follow a similar evolution path based on the tastes I have had from previous vintages.

Ooooh!  Sorry, that totally went over my head.  Too early...need more coffee... [&o]

I don't have experience with any of them either, so I am lost on where to start.  Judging by my experience with the regions I'd guess the two Italians first, then the Drouhin, followed by the Clos Apalta.  But that's pure speculation.

I've had the 01,02 and 03 Apalta, with my most recent being the 03 Apalta back in Feburary of this year.  Looking at my note from it, I obviously really liked it but did note that it could use a couple of hours in the decanter.

If you are going to taste the 4 wines in one go, then you can break them down into two groups:

Group 1 -- The Langhe Nebbiolo and the Oregon PN
Group 2 -- The Apalta and the Brunello

It is certainly group 1 before group 2. Of that there should be little or no doubt.

Inside the groups there is more room for discussion.

In Group 1, since both the Nebbiolo and the Pinot Noir are young, then I suppose most people would prefer to go with the PN ahead of the Nebbiolo, but this is by no means a must.

Group 2 is tougher. Both are 2003 and both are bigger wines. Maybe most people would taste the Brunello ahead of the Apalta, but I will leave the Brunello to the end. Provided that the Brunello has had a few hours in the decanter (as it is very young), I suppose it will provide a more restrained and elegant character, which I prefer to experience in the "final" wine of a tasting.

So, in the live event, I myself will go through the PN, the Nebbiolo, the Apalta, and the Brunello in that order.

But, as I said before, I will consume the 4 bottles over the weekend, so I am opening the Langhe on Friday evening, the PN for lunch on Saturday, and the other two well ahead of the live event on Saturday evening (European time). Whatever is left on Saturday will get retasted on Sunday.

But when they are tasted together, it is PN, Nebbiolo, Apalta and Brunello for me.

why can't we drink what we can get, in order we like and just post TN's on Sunday night-Monday?

We are not drinking at the same time, we are not all drinking the same wines, why don't we just keep it simple stupid without overcomplications?

PS: Serge, I don't like overcomplications more than anyone else, but I believe a lot of people read this forum to learn a bit about wine and wine tasting. When I go through these "didactic" postings (such as the one about the tasting order) I have these people in mind. For those who either have a lot of knowledge already or simply do not care, these postings may sound patronizing, but it is not the intention. I just like sharing knowledge about wine, that's all.
