I'll be on the Skype chat.  There will be three of us at my place and we're gonna geek it out with laptops, etc.

I swear...if I get one IM from you while I'm sitting across the table from you we're not friends anymore.

It's a veritable certainty.  How could he resist?

It's like riding a mountain bike with a lefty fork.  You can't pass a group of riders without someone pointing out that half of your fork is missing (of course, that made no sense if you're not into mountain biking)

If anyone is still scrambling for Dom. Drouhin, try calling Liner & Elsen in Portland, OR.  They're the "top shop" in the area and if they don't have any they are still the best bet to find some.

Skype is an internet VOIP  (voice over ip) program which millions of people use to talk to each other over the internet --- for free ---.  It also has great conferencing capabilities with simple text chat or video with voice.  It's pretty cool and very popular.  www.skype.com

For those of you tasting on your own, I found a couple of places in CA that carry a 375 of the 05 Domaine Drouhin

http://www.dandm.com

http://www.wallywine.com/default.aspx?affiliateid=10062

http://www.halfwitwines.com

At most this will only save you about $15, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

It could also save a possible hangover.

As it is, we'll have 3 people and 3 bottles at 11:30am.  Yikes!

Don't worry - I am sure my wife, and Jeremy's too, will be having a taste as well.  Maybe I'll but out a box of crackers or something.    ;)

For the live event.

1) I am now on Skype under the ID "maestro_ct".
2) Search for "maestro_ct" and ask to add me as a contact (make sure to send your details to me when you do that -- it is the default behavior of adding a contact anyway).
3) I will build the contact list using that ID, as people add me as a contact.
4) On Saturday, from 11am PT (2pm ET; 7pm UK; 8pm CET) I will open a chat conference with everyone who has added me as a contact. Between 11am and 11:30am I will be adding anyone that goes online.
5) At 11:30 we start tasting.
6) Anyone left behind just send me a message on Skype and I will add you to the conference.

I have no idea what we will talk about (never tried this before), but I am suer we'll think of something. There should be 4 adults tasting in my house during the live event (including me and my wife).

A little late to this post, but I have this wine in my inventory, which I paid $69, just checked wine searcher pro and prices range from $40 to $85. Are there 2 different wines, or are these all the same? I've heard of one called the "white label". We obviously want to be drinking the same wine!

http://www.wine-searcher.com/prof/wine-select.lml?Xwinenameid=&Xwinename=Casanova+di+Neri+Brunello+di+Montalcino&Xvintage=2003&Xlocation=USA&Xstate=&Xcurrencycode=USD&Xlist_format=N&Xkeyword_mode=A&Xbottle_size=&Xprice_set=CUR&Xprice_min=&Xprice_max=&Xfirstwine=1&ID=LLKBB705R2F00G7

Ok, I found a 2003 Casanova de Neri - but going for a whopping price of US$95!

Wow - Are you sure that's not a different special one?  I got mine for $49 and the other Italian one (the Barbaresco) was only about $17.

More info, K&L has both wines (see link), I believe the one we want is the white label "2003 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino" (cheaper of the 2).

The other one is "2003 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova"

I'm not sure that K/L label pictures are correct, both wines say "Tenuta Nuova", I'm not positive but I believe the white label does not contain this description. Hopefully we have an expert here that can advise, or post the correct label.

The bottle shown is not the bottle for that product.

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1038511

When dealing with the KL website, which is really good in almost every way, do not pay any attention to the bottle pictures they use.  They are usually wrong or not even there at all.

The regular Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino, which is the $49.99 wine in the KL link I put just above, is the one you want.  The Tenuta Nuova is the higher end bottling and is about $20 more.

Neri has three Brunello wines: "Brunello di Montalcino", "Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova", and "Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto".

The Cerretalto is in the $90-110 range; the Tenuta Nuova in the $60-70 range; and the normal bottling sells in the $40-50 range.

We are having the cheapest (normal) bottling.

Not to make things complicated, Serge. But colonel has a point, obviously everyone is free to do as they wish. But as a novice if anyone has recommendations as to a "preferred technique" I would like to know.

Shouldn't we all do the same things with the wines re serving.
If someone decants 6 hours earlier and someone else pops it in the fridge to cool down and then drinks straight away it's going to taste different.
What about you recommend a preferred technique.
I've still got to find the wines.

Apes,
this was addressed 20+ posts ago:
http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/fb.asp?m=25231

2) doesn't matter what we do, the wines won't taste the same for various reasons:
A. all bottles were stored and transported at different temperatures
B. all glasses are different, all serving temperatures are different, all acompanying snaks are different, the palates are different. There are reasons why 20 people on CT tried wines and they came up with 20 different notes.

That's Singapore wine prices for you. We get scalped unless there is a huge sale offering - only then do we get wines even approaching reasonable prices.

What are you going to cook for the tasting?

As I mentioned before, I am distributing the 4 wines over 3 meals (Nebbiolo for dinner on Friday, Pinot Noir for lunch on Saturday, and the other two for dinner on Saturday, with all 4 re-tasted during the 'live' event).

I am thinking that, for the dinner on Saturday featuring the Apalta and the Brunello (plus a re-taste of the other two), we might go with a Tagliata Chianina (beef tenderloin grilled rare and sliced, balsamic vinegar and green peppercorn sauce; served with Tuscan salad and roasted fingerling potatoes).

For the lunch on Saturday featuring the Pinot Noir, I reckon Tagliatelle Pasta with Wild Mushroom and Asparagus Salad.

For the Nebbiolo dinner on Friday, I think we will make Truffle Risotto with Bistecca Tagliata.

What about you?

I was thinking that Cheetos would go quite well

I have mixed emotions about including food with the tastings.  While the right pairings would be great, they could also alter the results.  The right food pairing can make almost any wine taste better than it really is.  An incorrect pairing could go the other way.

I absolutely love pairing cheese and wine...YUM.

My posting with what we plan to cook is to encourage those of you who can to cook something similar, especially for the "live" event.

The Tagliata Chianina is not at all difficult, and even if your beef is not Chianina, any tenderloin will work for a similar dish.

Just grill about four or five 6-ounce tenderloin steaks (seasoned with salt and pepper) rare and slice them.

For the sauce you will need:
1 3/4 cups beef stock
1/4 cup chopped shallots
1 cup whipping cream
3 tablespoons Cognac or brandy
2 tablespoons drained green peppercorns in brine

You then boil the stock in a small saucepan until reduced to 3/4 cup (about 7-8 minutes) while the chopped shallots are sauté for 2 minutes in a skillet with olive oil. You then incorporate the shallots to the stock and add 1 cup of whipping cream, 3 tablespoons of Cognac and the green peppercorns. Now you boil until it thickens to sauce consistency (about 6-7 minutes). You then season the sauce to taste with pepper.

Spoon the sauce over steaks and serve with the salad and the potatoes...
