How will the real time event work without any tasting notes being posted live?

We will chat while we drink (and will influence each other, of course), but it will be fun to wait for the "final veredict" when the TNs come in on Monday.

Also, not everyone will be able to join the live chat event.

Paul S -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/6/2008 10:10:23 AM)

Sounds good. I better wait for the rest of you to nominate your wines though - we have access to quite a range of wines in Singapore, but not quite as much as those of you in London or New York for sure.

Maestro -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/7/2008 6:43:31 AM)

After the first 24 hours of voting, these are the wines leading the poll at the moment:

2003 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta
2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir
2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo

Still plenty of time left to vote.

Maestro -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/7/2008 10:56:08 AM)

Hey Eric, can we create one global "event" in CT to hold everybody's tasting notes from this gig, or must each user create his or her own event?

---k me running!
I voted fro all 3!

Maestro -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/8/2008 3:46:46 AM)

I believe that...

Maestro, Wrighty, Paul S, Serge, J2K, Blue Shorts, duck833, apes, mbannon, cgrimes, rjonas, GalvezGuy, RoundersRob, fingers, jhannah27, Colonel Lawrence, gbm, and Doryman

...are already committed to the tasting.

That's a good crowd!

Please join us. And don't forget to vote so that I can try and make sure that most of the wine selection is accessible to us.

[:D]

Colonel Lawrence -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/8/2008 5:12:10 AM)

I'll do my best, but the selection are not readily available here.
I'll have to hope I can find them when I get back to Blighty.
You managed to select only two wines that I own (yes Bordeaux), but for different years.
I am hopeful about the Chilean, but the rest will be a new experience for me - which I guess is half the game.
Might see if I can tie up with Wrighty, although we're both just passing through the UK.
Cheers,
L.

Paul S -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/8/2008 9:16:14 AM)

Same here - have to track those wines down. The Clos Apalta would be the easiest by far.

Make sure you vote for the wines you can get your hands on. And it only takes one wine to be able to join the fun...

Given the spread, we may need to go with 4 wines in order to give everyone a chance to taste two or more. I would still open the 4 myself, but would suggest that people open 3 or however many they can get their hands on. We will see. Let the polls close first.

Wrighty -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 7:45:39 AM)

Colonel,

I searched a few of the wines on wine-searcher.com and found quite a few on http://www.frw.co.uk although some in cases (they sell single bottles so was going to ask about odd bottles).  I didn't see the point of searching for all.  Once the results are in I'll track what I can down.

It would be good to try and meet up - however I land on the day the tasting starts so will need to consider family obligations (both older and younger).

Wrighty

Colonel Lawrence -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 10:39:03 AM)

I'm 40 minutes from Heathrow.
And in fact will be in UK before you.
Tell me what you've found and where from and I could have it delivered to me.
I use F&RW quite a lot, they used to be more competitive than Farr.
Cheers,
L.

PS  Who else is on the tasting from the South of England?

Maestro -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 4:09:16 PM)

Alright, here's the situation:

As I am the host and have access to all the wines I suggested, it looks like I should open 4 bottles instead of 3, so most people have a chance to taste at least two (hopefully three) wines.

It looks then like I would be opening these:

3 2003 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=191006
4 2003 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=441024
18 2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=373992
24 2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=508458

And then:

-- Blue Shorts, Serge, cgrimes, and GalvezGuy should be able to taste 3 wines.
-- J2K, apes, mbannon, Wrighty, RoundersRob, and Fingers should be able to taste 2 wines.
-- Duck83, rjonas, PaulS, jhannah27, and the Colonel should be able to taste 1 wine.

(Although I believe Wrighty and the Colonel should be able to find all 4 wines in London, really.)

The question is whether one can get more wines if we cast these 4 choices in stone right now. Should we do that?

RoundersRob -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 4:41:12 PM)

I have easy access to the Casanova di Neri Brunello and the Produttori del Barbaresco.  Both are at KL wines here locally.

They have the 05 Drouhin in magnum format so I don't know if I can get that one.

I have 04 Apalta and have already had the 03 twice so you can go by my current notes on that one if you like.

Serge Birbrair -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 5:04:08 PM)

So...should I go and get those wines????

RoundersRob -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 5:18:03 PM)

I just ordered the two Italian wines from those 4 listed.  I will be on the lookout for the Drouhin pinot as well.

Wrighty -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 7:12:50 PM)

Will start to track them down - hopefully should be able to get them all.

Wrighty

J2K -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 8:25:10 PM)

I have already purchased these two and they are in my cellar awaiting their August execution.
18 2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir
24 2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo

There is a slight possibilty I can get the Casa Lapostolle.

Paul S -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 8:59:17 PM)

Ah crap - my South American retailer ran out of the 2003 Clos Apalta. Only 2005 left. No 2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir either, only the Domaine Drouhin Laurene left for the 2005 vintage. You guys mind if get get one of those as a point of comparison? Will stick out like a bit of a sore thumb.

Paul S -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 9:20:52 PM)

Ok, I found a 2003 Casanova de Neri - but going for a whopping price of US$95!

Blue Shorts -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/9/2008 10:14:03 PM)

Hey Rob... let me know if you find the drouhin... Buy 2 and I'll take one off of your hands.. if you don't mind, of course.[image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s1.gif[/image]

If you don't mind telling me.... where'd youget the 2 Italian wines.  If it's in your area, it's in mine.

edit:  Oops... I just saw that you got them at K&L.

Maestro -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/10/2008 1:18:01 AM)

Voting has closed (these wines were way ahead of the rest of the pack). These are the 4 wines that will be tasted:

2003 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=191006
2003 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=441024
2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=373992
2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=508458

It only takes access to one wine to join the fun. [;)]

Even if you have had them before, if you still can get a new bottle it will fun to see how it is drinking now and open it together with everyone else.

Who is planning to join the Saturday "live" tasting?

pjaines -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/10/2008 5:41:03 AM)

Unfortunately it is my wedding anniversary that weekend so the wife was not too impressed at the thought of drinking AND being on-line.  However, found some of these wines for sale in London and the wife is going along with the idea that we drink the wines and I'll report back later.

Bloody wedding anniversary spoiling my fun.

For those of you in London (if anyone) Theatre of Wine in Greenwich have 2 of these wines (Drouhin and the Barberesco).  Thankfully for me it is 1 mile away.

Serge Birbrair -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/10/2008 5:50:41 AM)

We'll go live my better half and me. If I get hold of all four bottles, I'll be very quite for a change.

Colonel Lawrence -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/10/2008 6:43:49 AM)

1st?

Wow - Are you sure that's not a different special one?  I got mine for $49 and the other Italian one (the Barbaresco) was only about $17.

KL has a magnum of the Drouhin but I don't think I need a magnum.  I'll keep my eyes open for it.

Wrighty -> RE: Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 16-18 (7/10/2008 8:41:06 AM)

Am looking at a case of 6 Casanovas from Fine and Rare (will ask if they'll break a case - suggesting they'll perhaps get more orders!) and will top up with the Ornellaia 04 which I've had my eye on.  Cost for the Casanova is GBP20 not sure if this is ex VAT though

The Lapostolle is available from Tunbridge Wells Secret Cellar for GBP40 with an 8.50 delivery charge (so will top up with some qpr wine for the summer).

And have e-mailed the Theatre of Wine for a delivery cost for the other two.

Any other tips from the UK contingent appreciated.

Waitrose have the Casanova Tenuta Nuova for GBP28 which seemed a good price.

Wait, did I miss something?  Why am I only tasting 1 wine?

I can pretty easily get the all four wines.  Rob, they have the 05 Drouhin for $39 at the Wine Stop in Burlingame.  www.thewinestop.com  I can pick one up for you if you want.
