Starting using cellar tracker to keep track of my new obsession.  Kinda of fell into the forums and lurked around ( a lot) and just read everyone's TN.  Every now and then I have something to post - but I am a real neophyte in the wine world and always feel I am playing catch-up.  Cellar tracker forum is friendly and rarely puts on airs - exponential learning going on here...even if some of it is NWR!  :)

It was a place where you could read everyones contributions, didn't have to say anything, or agree, but it was open and friendly.
No topic seemed too weird and those who enjoyed a heated debate had one, those who didn't just avoided them (but probably got some amusement out of it).
I thought it was a place with tolerant, open minded people.
I enjoyed inputting what I knew, which was about Bordeaux reds and rather more esoteric topics (not directly linked to wine, but valuable - I thought).
There were few posts, most seemed reasonably well thought out, and those who knew very little were so apologetic at even posting.
A few seemed to enjoy riling others, but with only one exception that I can think of (and didn't like as it seemed personal) the tone reverted to CT decency.
The forum had the gentlest moderator in the whole world, someone who's judgement seemed extraorinarily deft.
That's why I joined and posted so frequently - I enjoyed it and felt among kindred spirits.
L.

Larry... some areas i hoped you would have elaborated but all in all sound observations... as usual well said. Yet i think we have an imbalance of mental bubble gum shared here... would like to see more substance/thought-provoking-discussions versus fluff/banter... too much child's play can be a real bore... on the flip side, the proverbial "too much work makes jack a dull boy", is just as true... just on the other end of the spectrum. As far as "kindred spirits" go... i think this is easy with people on the surface... when we dare to venture into deeper waters we find that we are more different then a like and in more meaningful ways more alike then different... and therefore have more to learn and share from one another.

With all of that said. Bare with me on the following noted parallel/analogy...

Let's say for the sake of this illustration... we are all hanging out in person in a circle... handing each other a glass of our favorites, we'd naturally all start getting chatty about the specific wines... after awhile this surface discussion would wear off in interest... and we'd find the conversation(s) evolve into wine related stories and eventually stories that don't even involve wine. We have all seen this phenomenon take place at every party or wine tasting. Just like with the sharing of wine we share our thoughts and ideas. Of course no one person will like every wine or non-wine discussion topic... but there should always be a bare minimum level of common courtesy. Has anyone ever given someone a book or article to read and their reply is so half-ass that it's clear they didn't even bother to read it... at best they glanced through it. It would be like to you handing someone a glass of your favorite wine, only to have that person swish and then spit back into the glass, then hand it back to you or even spit their swish into your face. Or lets say someone completely rejects your offer (offer = handing you a glass) by knocking it out of your hand? Or maybe in reply they completely ignore you, leaving you standing there with a glass of wine extended (like someone extending their hand to give you a handshake) then proceeds to pour glasses of their favorite wine and then starts handing them out to everyone in the circle.

Now note: being a part of a circle is not mandatory you don't have to participate... you can always just stand outside of the circle and listen in... but in the event you feel propelled to step in and say something... one must be considerate and thoughtful about the manner in which they accept and reject what is shared within the circle... for once you join in you are a part of a circle/conversation/thread... if you have very little in terms of substance to offer the circle in turn, to further develop the subject at hand... then it's best to step out and listen or completely step away and check out other circles...and for those who choose to stay, the highest honor... degree of respect you can offer to those participating in a tasting/discussion is to drink every drop and wait to digest before sharing your critique.

dagnabit ! ... distracted once again ... have to get back to writing my book... or maybe i was already?

Looked  around at a few forums and never felt like I could say anything as a newbie. Then stumbled on to this forum soon after starting to use the database to track my small collection, and found it the perfect place to ask stupid questions and get informative and thoughtful responses (for others as well I hope). I will probably ask many more stupid questions in the future and do so without any embarassment!

NiclasW, we all learn by asking questions,
there are no stupid questions, only the stupid answers
:)

The day one's brain can no longer learn and stops asking question is the official day when brain starts to die.

A toast for the Sergemyster... yes... may we all challenge one another to grow a brain and keep each others intellectual curiosity and understanding in shape... no matter how tasking and/or patience the effort may require.

and Nick... one thing i have found to be an absolute ... is that there is very little that we can accurately call "stupid" in the world (as much as we'd knee-jerked like to)... to be completely fair we should say "ignorant", not to be confused with "stupid" for all that "ignorant" means... is a lack of knowing.... and there is no shame in that... unless of course you should know better, which would be "stupid"
