On the issue of Corkage fees, has anyone else found success in offering the waiter/sommelier a short pour as a thank you? I usually find they are excited to try new wines (or more often old wines aged well) and they usually wave the corkage for my being polite and offering them a swig. All the same pet peeves as above, but another one -- I was blown away at was a business dinner with my team (14 people) and our new boss. She knew I liked wine so asked me to order. As she was my new boss, I picked out a $50 bottle for appetizers and a $100 bottle for dinner, and based on the number of people drinking it was going to be about two of each bottle. I got her blessing in advance. What I didn't count on was after ordering the bottles, the waiter just kept filling glasses through the evening without ever asking if additional bottles should be opened. When the bill came, the tally was 6-$50's and 4-$100's...she about got whiplash when she saw the bill. I was miffed at the restaurant for not asking, but didn't really care on the big scale since I gave notice two weeks later...

Hollo, I always offer waiters / Somms a sip of the wine we bring. This is just a good courtesy and yes, quite often this results in waiver of a corkage fee.

I can't afford to eat in restaurants very often, so I have no experiences, but I was wondering after reading about too warm wine being served at restaurants. Aren't those of you who have been served too warm wine worried that it might be cooked? I've seen wine being stored high up close to the ceiling in restaurants where on a busy night it might get up to 30 deg C. If the wine's been there for a month or two, surely it's gone?

Wine is hold in the fridge and in 30 secs in the MW ( the whole bottle) the red become drinkable.

CG, I am not sure what is more shocking - the admission from your patient that he mixes wine with sprite or the fact that his doctor is surfing wine sites while he should be looking after his patients!!!

And besides, we've had 2 dentists who admit to a quick looksie while their patients are numbing up! Ahhh,, The French. So refined. So sophisticated. So big on nuclear power. So peace-loving. I guess my real question is, in reponse to the action proposed in the article, how can the French government protect French growers from a "rapidly globalizing market"? Declare war on Australia?
