Am new to the forum, but this thread caught my eye. Am curious if anyone else is in my situation; I like to have a glass (sometimes two) of wine every night, but my wife drinks far less (one glass per week usually). I get the "eye" every now and again which means "your opening another bottle?" where she seems to think I am drinking too frequently (not too much, just every night). But to me, it is a part of my enjoyment, and considering the cellar is approaching 700 bottles, I either need to start throwing some grand parties or just try to ignore "the eye".

Anyone else have a spouse that doesn't really enjoy the hobby as much as you do?

Cheers!

My wife loves wine but doesn't enjoy the "hobby" so much. Meaning she likes one glass of wine each night but she doesn't care what it is. So if she buys a bottle of crappy stuff (since she is not allowed in my cellar) to have one glass at night, I just pass and let her enjoy it. I don't think she ever had a wine she didn't like.

J2K - I like the way you say your wife is not allowed in your cellar.  I think men are a lot more territorial about their cellars than women.  I think my wife humours me by pretending not to know what is our cellar there but for some reason she seems to know when I have sneaked a bottle out.

I'm convinced she has some alternate stock keeping system in place just to catch me out.

I feel like this stigma of "feeling guilty" about having a drink or two, whatever it may be, is an American thing.  As mentioned here before, look at most of Europe, it wouldn't be dinner without wine.

Nah, it's not only US, also northern Europe has the same. Those laidback people in the south drink wine everyday. Up here we go for the binge drinking style, the Friday night plastering and staggering home after midnight. Lots of negative talk about alcohol consumption in the media all the time.

But binge drinking leads to headaches and other maladies , so we try to limit it to a maximum of 4 bottles per week, usually half a bottle (between the two of us) per night with dinner. There's also the question of the wallet, since I'm not rolling in cash and my tastes for wine tend towards the 20 euro wines now... But there are so many different kinds of wine I'm anxious to taste! In the perfect world (where livers can handle lots of ethanol) I'd like to have a bottle a night!

Your liver might be happier than you think about moderate daily consumption.

That just depends on how many happy souls are sharing that bottle...

By the way, Niklas, have you ever watched "Night on Earth"? There's an episode on Italy (Rome) and one on Finland (Helsinki) -- as well as LA, NY, and Paris. All are stereotype-driven, but very funny nonetheless.

As I'm outed at the start of the thread thought I better confess - felt a pang of guilt as we ordered the 3rd bottle last week!

I'm generally a half bottle most nights with dinner heading to a bottle on non 'school nights'.  This has actually evened out, used to be bigger weekends and dryer weeks but don't have the other winos round so much now!

Hardly touch beer or spirits and on holiday recently was limited to beer and after a 2 or 3 lost interest.

Wine, not alohol, seems to be my only vice and as I get less headaches (i.e. hangovers) than I used to guess I'm heading in the right direction even if the doctor isn't convinced I'm in quite the right place.

Haven't seen that unfortunately, but I remember there was much talk about it when it came out. The plot given on Wikipedia sounds about right for Helsinki...

Wrighty, that 3rd bottle killed me and I think it was your idea too.  It probably didn't help that we had about 2 slices of ham and a meatball and little else to eat.

Happy to take the blame!

The 'some tapas to start' did become 'tapas to finish' as well.  Next time we'll have to make a bigger effort on the food, would make the morning after less of a strain.

I enjoyed the evening and my colleagues were pleased to see me in one piece the next day!

I was just glad not to wake up chained to a radiator with a gimp mask on.

If you are back next time, then maybe food with the wine would be better.  I looked a little tired the next morning.

Serge what does anti mean to you, it means without and anti oxidant means without oxygen. So when you add oxygen to the wine this is what causes it to dissappear. The Wine Master at Wilamente Valley Vinards has done extensive studies. This was the first Winery in the US to put the level of anti oxidants their wine labels. Also this study shows that the dryer the season the higher the amount of anti oxidant. Since the grape is stressed by less water it produces more anti oxidant. He was charting this with hope that it may tell when the grapes will produce a great wine.

hmmm... many variables to consider:
...your height, weight, personal tolerance and genetic predisposition for alcohol.
...the type and amount of food (the more starch the slower the absorption).
...and of course the rate/amount at which you drink.
Interesting to note that the wife and i, at a rate of 1/2 bottle per weekday,
is a common partake (based on the consensus of this thread).
Weekends we usually split a bottle or two between us.
...we get most of our stock from World Market & Trader Joe....we are always on the hunt for the best of the cheapest....and we rarely ever drink anything over $10.

A E, I get it, this is very simple and elementary when proper formulas are used:

where
b= anti
a= oxidant
w= water in the weather
R= stress on the grapes

The rersults of the formula should analysed if weighted homogeneous complex surface singularity is metrically conical (i.e., bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a metric cone) only if its two lowest weights are equal. If they are not,  a pair of weighted homogeneous complex surface singularities that are topologically equivalent but not bi-Lipschitz equivalent should be used.

Piece of cake, if you ask me, we do it every day for my durian crop, it takes 30 second a day and I do it all in my head before breakfast.

To clarify Serge's formula, here's a more digestable article:
