My question is:
if the wine is as acidic as the majority claim it to be,
how the hell can it "lack backbone" at the same time?

Exactly - why did he keep drinking the vile stuff ?  When I have a few bottles of somethng I personally don't care for - I ends up in the wine basket at the next charity event! :)

I oftern wonder - particularly when I enjoyed a wine wrote a detailed tasting report and a gave it a good score - after I read through the rest of the notes and find someone repeatedly tasted the wine over a period of months and consistently gave it just an awful score.

I wonder if one lot somehow got spoiled or ruined and another lot did not?  That's a huge variation in scores and impressions.

I asked the store owner for:
bone dry acidity Riesling with petroleum notes
(Who could have thought it will be easier getting Australian Riesling fitting the description in South Florida than the one from Finger Lakes, NY????)

7/25/2008: Slight petroleum on the nose, but lacks some purity, just like gasoline cut with ethanol.
Not as "bone dry" as some TNs written by others made me believe, I expected more. I hope it was just a touch more acidic.
Pleasant and refreshing finish. Plenty of backbone (high grade calcium, you can count every vertebrae with no problems)
Tanzer liked it more than I did, but not much more. kstoddard, I think you described it the best.
Worth throwing a few more in the cellar just to see where it goes 3-10 years from now.

How about this one.  Tight AND flabby?  Talk about oxymorons.

I guess you just have to find people that like the same wines that you do and then use their recommendations.



From .375. This was as tight as can be for the first 45 minutes. After some time in the decanter this opened up showing nice fruit. However, seems flabby on the mid-palate and the finish is just a bit clipped.

Thanks for intrepidly disregarding all those vile acrid 70´s TN´s and putting yourself on the line in the name of research!
Maybe Grimble keeps drinking and slamming this wine in an attempt at reverse Parkerization; to drive down the demand and prices so he can have this wine all to himself ;)

Interesting thread, being a friend of Aussie Riesling I have been trying to 'get' this wine for some time but don't.  Find it too chalky and have now decided to leave a few bottles in the cellar to see if age is its friend.  It seems to be rated by every critic but have had a lot of other better Aussie Rieslings. 

Perhaps we should add it to the next on-line tasting?

There is only one thing which is the big question mark in my head:
$28  price tag.

I had more interesting Rieslings from Finger Lakes, Germany @ 3/4 of a price.
