apes -> Did my wine get cooked (8/3/2008 5:07:06 AM)

Had an online delivery and was not home. The wine sat outside for 1 day in about 80 degree heat, what do you think? Wasn't planning on opening any for a while, all 2005 bordeaux.

If it sat in the straight sunlight all day that is probably not good (the temperature was therefore effectively well above 80). If it sat in the shade my guess is that things are fine. Wine may be sensitive, but my experience has been that it is not nearly as fragile as some suggest. For your sake, I hope the conditions were the first.

Depending on what you bought, you can always open one now -- if it's cooked, it's cooked. If it's not, it's not, and the others will follow suit. There is no reason to commit infanticide however.

2005 Château Pedesclaux

2005 Château d'Issan

2005 Château Pontet-Canet (ouch)

I guess I can open one bottle of Pedesclaux.

That would be my choice. Good luck.

Understand the ouch completely.

What carrier would leave "Adult Signature Required" on the doorstep?  I would claim that it was all ruined and the carrier should replace it.

superbarre -> RE: Did my wine get cooked (8/4/2008 6:38:19 AM)

I would call them and ask where the hell my wine is

No need to be dishonest.  Whether the wine is ruined or not, they're going to get an earful for delivering alcoholic beverages without an adult signature and perhaps the threat of being reported to the ATF Bureau.  You know, use all that lawyer-speak that you're so good at SB.
Still curious about what carrier.  Nearly every shipment of wine I've ever had delivered has stickers on it that read "Adult Signature Required" and additional ones that say "Temperature Sensitive, Protect From Heat".  That delivery driver would soon learn what cooked wine is all about because he'd be paying for it.

Lieing to the carrier, threatening with ATF, intend to use legalese....
The Church was right, wine DOES turn some people into wild beasts!

LOL -

Yes, perhaps idle threats.  But the winemakers, wine retailers, and us, the wine drinkers, do need to voice our concerns about the matter.  If shippers keep screwing it up, we'll never see a change in bad laws around the states concerning wine shipment.  The dry Legislators and junior Attorneys wil use the "It's too difficult for the shipping companies to get it right" argument to say Niet to Wine.  It's crazy that I can't send a nice bottle to Mumsy (or even have it sent) in Arkansas or Cousin Sue in Texas, etc.
okay, off my soapbox (especially since CA doesn't have the problem!)

Oh yeah, about church -  I sit in the balcony now!

apes -> RE: Did my wine get cooked (8/4/2008 7:38:06 PM)

It was Fedex. But since I have had so much wine shipped over the past 6 months I had told him it was ok to leave. I'm a little upset that the wine store (amazing grapes) did not e-mail me to let me know the shipment was on the way. I certainly don't want to get the driver fired, so I will not report it.

apes-

I had the same problem with FedEx a few weeks ago - twice.  First time a neighbor did me a "favor" by signing for the delivery and leaving it on the porch.  Second time, FedEx guy did me another by keeping my delivery in the truck until the end of the day.

Moral of the story - don't let FedEx deliver your wine.

What happened? Try any of them yet? Enquiring minds want to know [:)]

Update, couldn't make it to the weekend. First, Amazing grapes called me today, although I was not home, and left a message that they were very concerned about this problem, and would rectify the problem if my wine is cooked(apparently they monitor the forum, I love smart business people). Tomorrow I will call them back and let them know the following.
I opened a bottle, well tried to open a bottle of 2005 Château Pedesclaux. The cork broke in half, but I was able to get the rest of the cork out in one piece. Although I had this problem (dry cork?) the wine is not cooked. This is my first foray into Bordeaux since I started to get serious about wine so I'm no expert but here are my impressions:
Popped poured and drank over 2 hours with no food. This seems to be a big wine that is ready to drink right now lots of dark fruit, leather after an hour turning to a very enjoyable chocolate. Glad I have 5 more bottles, will drink another 2 within the next year or so and will let the rest "rest".
Wouldn't it be a gas if this wine was cooked, Boy it would save me a ton of money in the future and prove I have no palate what so ever!!!! MY BIGGEST FEAR

I popped this thread link over to Paul @Amazing Grapes.  I thought they should know and I'm glad they replied.  [image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s2.gif[/image]

I am glad the wine boards serve this useful purpose, on behalf of all of us, thank you, fingers.

You ain't the only one... [&:] I've decided to do an experiment: buy two bottles of the same wine at the same time from the same place, put one in the cellar for a month and the other next to the stove (where many fine kitchens seem to have wine racks in beautiful magazines) for the same, and then taste! Needless to say, the wine I will use for the experiment will not be premier cru Bordeaux... [;)]
