jhannah27 -> Is it the Summer? (8/6/2008 10:57:21 PM)

Although I first grew to love wine on Sauvignon Blancs, I have since become much more of a red drinker.  However, the last month or so, I am constantly craving quality white wines.  Not that I am complaining, I have found some really great whites lately, that I may have overlooked or otherwise forgotten about if it weren't for my unexplained palate shift.

Is it the summer months?

Has my palate changed?

Are the most recent vintages of whites around the world that good that they are what are standing out in my head?

Who knows.  Just thought I'd throw it out there to get thoughts on this.

I am feeling the same about whites this week but more because I expected to.
At the beach on vacation this week and a good white wine on a late summer afternoon after enjoying the beach all day is unbeatable. I've hit all kinds of whites this week and satisified with all.

I always like whites, summer, winter or otherwise.  I actually think they are underappreciated by many wine enthusiasts.  To me, they are an essential component to any multi-course dinner and warm up the palate for the reds to follow.

I have a special fondness for OR Pinot Gris because it is so associated with my annual summer trips to OR, vacation, and decompression.  I do not drink it at home because very few good OR PG make it out of the state.

At home we drink White Burgs and Riesling.

That's unfortunate.  Pinot Gris is one area where Oregon truly excells.  Another was Gewurztraminer but, alas, most of those vineyards have been replanted to pinot noir.  The Evesham Wood gewruz was a terrific wine back when they made it in the '90s.

Come to think of it, I have seen any of the better Oregon wines, red or white, at stores in the Boston area.

True, the selection is scarce.  Thanks to the few wineries who will ship to MA (Bergstrom, Torii Mor).  I have actually considered setting up an auxillary cellar in Bend for this reason.  There is a place that does this though it is a little more than I want to spend at this time. Will have to see if my annual shipping costs would justify just keeping the wines safe in OR.
