Serge Birbrair -> so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 3:44:38 AM)

Are we waiting for the "second coming" before they are posted?

Maestro -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 3:48:11 AM)

My event and Rob's are already in.

C'mon people...

I only had one wine but this one just sweapt me off my feet.

Probably the best 2005 Oregon PN I had so far. Concentrated, lots of class, dried blackbery, fresh earth, long finish and pure enjoyment.

Points for comparission purposes only for Virtual Community Tasting Event -- August 15-17

don't mind them.  93 points

I always stayed clear from Oregon Drouhin and this tasting made me see the errors of my ways.

pjaines -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 4:36:06 AM)

I'll post my notes when I get home from work tonight - however, for summary

Drouhin - lots of alcohol in the nose and in the mouth - I thought it was quite disjointed.  However, I have had this wine before and I think it might be in a dumb-phase.  Plus, it is far too young right now.  I didn't decant it - just left the bottle open for 2-3 hours which may explain why my notes were not as enthusiastic as Serge's.

Langhe - decanted for 3-4 hours but was getting very little from it.  I think it was Maestro who said that after 6-7 hours it started to open up.  However, I did quite like this wine.  Elegant - started to show mushroomy earthy smell but this really needs more bottle time.

Serge Birbrair -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 4:48:43 AM)

Paul, I didn't decant. I opened the bottle and led it come to 67F from 55F which took about 40 mins and this was it.

cgrimes -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 5:01:31 AM)

Sorry, busy day at the office.  I'll try to sneak mine in where I can.

Nicklas, if you host the next one, keep this in mind:
Sunday is better for posting TNs than Monday.

For convenience, here's my solitary note on the Domaine Drouhin:

17/8/2008 rated 92 points: Drank at home as part of the Cellar Tracker Virtual Community Tasting Event. I did not decant this, but drank it over a leisurely 3 hours or so while watching the olympics and Man Utd vs Newcastle - hence lots of time to take more detailed notes. This wine was rather Jekyll and Hyde-ish, starting out rather mediocre, then really coming into its own after two and a half hours or so in the bottle. It augurs well for aging potential.

As some tasters have noted, this was extremely dark at the core, very un-pinot like. Extremely attractive nose from the very first pour, somewhat a cross between Burg and new world pinot, with sweet ripe cherries and blackcurrant nuances, and pretty flowery scents riding along a bed of earth and a touch of dry wood. Dense aromas, but I also got the sense of clean and cool fruit - almost like a new world Chambolle. There was a touch of glycerin and acrylic at first, but this subsided over time. The nose took on more Burgundian features towards my last glass, showing earth and mushrooms, a herbal streak and some peppery spice along with a touch of toasted wood.

The palate was a little rough at first blush - a real surprise giving the cool and classy nose. It had some density and really good fruit weight, with dark cherries and a hint of plums. Again, I got a sense of good purity on the fruit, with rather filligreed and lacy, with perfumy flavours around the edges. Good round acid and rather velvety mouthfeel, but these gave way to a rather dry, woody texture and a sear of heat at the mid-palate, where the fruit abrubtly dropped off. It seemed rather imbalanced at this point, and it took quite awhile for the wine to come around. It slowly took on greater sweetness, the edges softened and integrated, and a finish built up, showing slightly gummy orange peel notes, toasted oak and slightly bitter herbs. The alcohol eventually receded into the background, until it became a rather more subdued wash of heat at the base of the throat. I was really enjoying it towards the end of the evening - the wine was round, velvety, with good weight, richness and intensity, and was nicely balanced with freshness. It is a bit edgy, but that should smoothen out with age. Do decant it for some time if you having a bottle soon. (151 views)

Mine are in.  I'm going to assemble them in an event note when I get time.  Thanks again, Maestro for a great idea!

Try one bottle of the Laurene cuvee for comparison.  I would be interested to hear your impressions.

Serge, I just secured a bottle of '04 Laurene.  It's your's if you come to Seattle  ;)

If you don't come, I will cellar until we finally exchange assets.

I don't think either of  you will be disappointed with the Laurene [image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s1.gif[/image]  My event is up from the weekend.  Its fun to see how you all incorporated these wines into your weekend.

RoundersRob -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 11:42:54 AM)

FYI- Laurene sees 100% new oak (I think) while the one we had is 20%.  So it might need time for that oak to integrate.

Yes, The Laurene is much more ageworthy.  It is oh so silky, though, even young.

2003 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta

Decanted for 2 hours. Not sure but this may have been a flawed bottle. Tasted before decanting, after decanting and a day later, didn't like anything about it. Seemed overripe, very tannic and had this taste of dead rotten dry leather. either not my type of wine or flawed.

Sounds like this may have been flawed. It's young, tannic, and there is a ton of really ripe fruits and oak so that sounds in line, but the dead rotten leather is what concerns me.

Sounds broken.  [:'(]

My notes are up here.

Oh...and if anyone wants to see my notes on the Apalta from about a month ago.

jhannah27 -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 2:54:29 PM)

It's interesting that there really isn't much variation in our scores nor our impressions.  I figured with so many people from all over tasting, that palate differences and personal preferences would come into play more heavily.

Good wine is good wine, I guess! [:)]

I agree though the one I didn't have (Clos Apalta) seemed to have the most variation.  I'm interested as I'll be serving the '04 this Thursday when I host my wine group (NSMFOW).  The theme will be (largely) French/New World partnerships.  Will post.

Sounds like you all had a great time on SCYPE.  Will try to join next time.  I can tell you right now, though, that my wife will really think I have lost it. [image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s2.gif[/image]

pjaines -> RE: so, where are the weekend TN's? (8/18/2008 3:31:57 PM)

I was a little more reserved about the Drouhin than most folks.  I thought it had the potential to be very good but didn't show well during the tasting.  I didn't give it a score but I thought it was good but would improve to very good.  In my world a Good is 84.  I guess we get back to the scoring system again and how some people would view an 84 as undrinkable.  But I think we have been over that ground numerous times.

Good point and a very interesting observation. I could not make the live tasting - so no "influence" from you guys on my palate. Yet I still found my experience with the Drouhin to be very similar to most of yours, including taste descriptors. Maybe that is some evidence that a global "wine-speak" is emerging.
