For those based in the UK I know that Majestic sells the Gigondas - although I am not sure which vintage.

My lucky day. Scored three of the four in one store: Greysac, Gigondas, and Beaucastel. They didn't have the Beaucstel on the floor but when I asked about it the manager said he had pulled the last few bottles off the shelf because it was selling so fast when it came in. (?!?!?!) Since the benefit was to me I didn't question him about it, just grabbed my loot and left. (He didn't set it aside to raise the price because it was actually a few bucks less than the average CT price.) Now if I can just find the Amarone.

pbm,
The PA W & S Premium stores carry the  Masi Amorone but most are on the 2004 now. You have to go to the store or call to check if they have the 2003. That's how found mine. BTW in case you need it transferred,

My regular retailer is the sole distributor for Perrin & Fils and Beaucastel (same people behind both ventures) in Singapore. Excellent!

J2K,

That's exactly what I found out. After my three bottle score - which was in NJ- I stopped off at a favorite PA store. Sure enough they had the 2004 - so close. They looked in the back but no luck. I haven't looked online yet. What's the price for the 2003? I found it for $45 about two hours from me.

I did PM Eric about it, but I guess he's been busy with other things!  Still waiting for my Guigal and Beaucastel. The Greysac and Amarone are sitting in the cellar.

pbm,
I looked on the website before but I don't think it's listed. I think there was a Masi Amarone on the site but it was NOT the Costasera. If a store still has it, it should be out on the shelf.
The 2003 Masi Amorone Costasera is $47.99 in PA. Does PA W&S charge to transfer?

Found the 05 Amrone in HK today, they still have the magnum of 03 but can't do that even over a long weekend.  Seems I got the last bottle of Beaucastel but still struggling with the other two.

Seems I might be a single bottle participent this time.

One of the funnest parts about these little events is trying to source the different wine.  It's like a little treasure hunt.

I found a 375ml of the Beaucastel so far and the Greysac is at my favorite local shop.

Lots of 04 Masi Amarone around.  I'll keep looking for the 03.

For anyone interested I found a 375 of the 03 Amarone ($26) at Winerz in CA.  They also have the Greysac (750 - $19).  They have the Beaucastel, but I think it's a little on the high priced side, especially since I found a 375 of it for $40 at Premier Cru (also in CA).

jer,  have you had prior experience with Winerz?  I've gotten burned by them and their reputation isn't the greatest among some local buddies.  If you have not received your order, don't count the chicks just yet.

Hmmm....good to know.  I will keep my fingers crossed.

I actually got a little worried when they said that I couldn't just come pick it up from their office in Orange.  I haven't heard of a place that doesn't have, as they put it, "the license for foot traffic."  I was a little perturbed that I had to pay for shipping from a place that is no more than 5-6 miles from my house.

Do you pretty much stick with Amazing Grapes, Wine Club, and Wine Exchange?  Any experience with Bacchus' Secret Cellar in Irvine, The Reserve in Ladera Ranch, or the Salt Creek Wine Company in Laguna Niguel?  I am still searching for my new "go to" wine shop down here.

I wasn't aware of their Orange location.  The one order I tried with them I was instructed to pick up at a store in Foothil Ranch (forgot the name) and then it wasn't there.  They promised to ship, but 3 months went by and they told me they couldn't get the product.  I'm tempted to cruise by the Chapman address and see what it is.  I doubt it has any storefront.

I went into Bacchus just two weeks ago for the first time.  Overpriced and limited selection.  Nice wine bar and I guess they survive by allowing food from the nearby food court to be brought in.  So you can have Reisling with your Yoshinoya.

Another little secret if you're down in Laguna Canyon,  Lagina Culinary Arts has a decent wine shop and an exemplary cheese/deli counter.  Master Somm. Peter Neptune directs the wine classes there and they have other French-trained chefs on staff.  There's also the Frog's Breath, just north of the circle in Orange.  Have not been to Hi-Time or Wine Pavillion.  Those are supposedly two big outlets with good rep's, too.  There is also a new wine bar at the The District in Tustin that's been getting a lot of attention and i plan to visit soon.
I still find Wine Exchange tough to beat for selection and Amazing Grapes tough to beat for service and good bargains.

Bottom line, I think we've got it pretty good in the OC!

Maybe we should plan a joint shopping trip?

I have been to the Chapman address.  It's a small office building and if you blink, you will miss the tiny "Winerz.com" sign on the door.  I was thinking they would be like JJ Buckley up in Oakland, who doesn't have a store front, but still allows you to pick up your order at their offices/warehouse.  I guess I was wrong.

Thanks for all the info.  I forgot about Hi-Times.  I have been there once before, but it was long before I was really into wine like I am now, and I remember being overwhelmed.  I'd love to go back now.  I will have to look into the others.

Anytime you want to do a shopping excursion, let me know.  If nothing else, we should meet at Amazing Grapes for a tasting sometime.

I just realized that this event will take place the weekend after my birthday.  It'll be a nice little present to myself.

Bob,

I got notice that my winerz order is on it's way to my house this morning, so looks like catastrophe averted.

I will take your advice and put them at the bottom of my list of places to order from next time out though, if for no other reason than I can't go pick up my order.

Sounds good.  I'll give you a PM when I see a good tasting being offered at AG.  I think Thursday's are their main night.

Cheers

I got my Guigal Gigondas, and have already bought the Beaucastel from a wine store in Germany over the internet. I hope I get the bottle before the VCTE...  it's my first time ordering a wine over the internet!

I have the Greysac and the Beaucastel.  So far only have found the Amarone from 2004.

I really hope the Greysac is better then the 2000 vintage, which I gave 70ish points and dumped down the drain.    It's a new vintage so I will keep an open mind.

fingers,

you live in Santa Ana but have never been to Hi-Time!?!?!!!!  You are missing out brother! ... especially if you like a good brew too ... their beer selection is one of the best I've found in SoCal.  Wine prices range from very good to a bit over-priced, but their selection is absolutely superb.  When you visit make sure you have a few hours on your hands!

J2K,

This state-owned monopoly BS has got to end. I had a few minutes the other day and stopped by a local PA store to inquire about the Masi. Sure enough they only had the 04. When i mentioned the website said they did not carry any of the bottle we were interested in the clerk said that was because the website "sucked.". When I asked if there was a way to find out if any store carried the 2003 you would have thought I suggested a rectal exam. After about ten minutes of waiting I suggested maybe the water works store might have it and asked about a transfer fee. He said there was no fee but it would take a month. I said no problem at which point he grimaced and reluctantly picked up the phone. I sweat it was like pulling teeth. I know they occassionally get good deals but I hate this system. I'd go crazy if I didn't live within a stones throw of NJ.

Sounds like some of the outlets of our state-owned monopoly in Finland!  Fortunately, I have found a nice one with friendly staff that are willing to help if the wine is found only in eg Helsinki.

pbm,
I did a transfer about a year ago (can't remember if there was a fee) but it only took one week.
BTW..did you get a survey from PA LCB regarding the website recently? I did and and didn't hold back on the improvements needed.
At least you have an alternative. My choice is West Virginia (?) or a 2 hour drive into Ohio for the nearest Costco.

Can't seem to find the Greysac, and the Masi only in 2004 and 2005 vintages. May well get one of the younger ones for comparison.

Paul - let me know if you do, as we'll be first up we could always sneak it in on a pre Skype before the rest start on the 03 if you can only get the Beaucastel.  I'm still searching in HK for the other 3 too although didn't get the chance this weekend.
