Will be interesting to see if those of us tasting from the 375 will find differences from those tasting from 750.

I'm thinking that those drinking from the 750 will get a bit more inebriated than those drinking 375, and thus will like it more

Haha...a fair assumption.

I went out and bought the Beuacastel and a 375ml bottle of the Amarone.

The Greysac I know I will not find around here. The Gigondas is more elusive than I thought. Every merchant carries the wine, but everybody has the 2004 now. But I'll carry on looking.

I finally caved and ordered the Guigal online.  The shipping was roughly the equivalent of the wine, so I bought an extra bottle.

Will anyone be decanting?  Which wine?  And for how long?

(I may not be able to wait until Nov 7th and since I will most likely be flying solo I will be hard pressed to finish all four bottles).

I'd think they'd all need some. What I'm trying to figure out is order and whether I want to open them all in one night (with some friends) or spread them over two evenings.

My plan is to open the Amarone and Beaucastel on Friday night with dinner, and place half of each into a 375 ml bottle with a screw cap and into the fridge. The other two will get the same treatment on Saturday. There are two of us drinking the wine, so that is a half bottle on Friday, a bottle on Saturday and a half bottle on Sunday per person. Saturday may be a bit tough (or rather Sunday morning), but with the jolly conversation on skype, it should be fun...

I have a suggestion for those who will be on Skype. I suggest we schedule a time for each wine so we can drink and discuss at the same time. The last tasting event I think we started drinking on Skype around 3:00pm EST and then kind of picked which wine to drink and discuss.

For Example:(considering the international participants we could a gree on a time, this is an example with EST)
wine #1   3:00-3:30pm
wine #2   3:30-4:00pm
wine# 3   4:00-4:30pm
wine#4    4:30-5:00pm

Thoughts?

EST is -5 hours to GMT. I am +2 hours to GMT, and I was thinking 9 pm my time would be when we start tasting the wines. That would be 2 pm in Eastern US, 11 am in Western US and 5 am (!) in Hong Kong. This being global, it is difficult to agree on a suitable time for all... Perhaps I could suggest that the "organizer" of each VCTE (if this becomes a standard!) can decide on the times... With Maestro, then me, it is a bit eurocentric for now, but by no means do we need to standardize the times to what we have now!

Niklas,

I think your timings are sensible, as far as I'm aware there's on PaulS and myself out East so would be silly to time it for just the two of us.  I'll log on to Skype at the end of the night though and if anyone's tucking in early I'll be happy to share views on the two I've got.

Well, it's happened again. What business travel giveth, business travel taketh away.

I "missed" the last virtual tasting due to travel for work. And now, after managing to gather all four bottles and look at them every time I go down to get the nightly bottle, I find out I will be in Athens the weekend of the tasting. Very frustrating. I'll probably open two of the four beforehand and two afterwards that way I can at least post some notes from Greece that weekend.

I just like the thought of Wrighty getting up at 5am and telling his wife he needs to go and drink some wine.

A bit too close to breakfast for it not to sound like a problem.  She already wonders why I type so much in the evenings!

Who else is ready and excited for the VT this weekend?  This thread has been a little more quite than the last, so I thought I'd try to jump start it a bit.

Which wine are you looking forward to the most?

For me, I am  CdP fan and I have not yet had any Beaucastel, so that one is top on my list.

Niklas, are we confirmed on the wines and times for Skype?!

J, i'm interested in trying the Amarone. I was never a big fan but it's been a while since I've tried one. Perhaps my tastes have changed.

I'll probably pick up an 04 Amarone this week as that was all I could find and I will probably have it for Friday night dinner and then chat about it during the Skype event when I taste the other two that I have.

Yep, all is well for wines and times. I'll post more details of how to contact by skype later this week. I'm really looking forward to the Beaucastel as well, although I'm afraid we are commiting infanticide by opening it!

The Amarone is second on my list.

I am thinking the Beaucastel is probably way to young for us to really get all of its nuances, but I am hoping that since I am drinking from a 375 will be a little further along than the standard 750.

Although I'll probably miss you all on Skype it's the Beaucastel which I'm looking forward to.  I might decant late on Friday and then see how it goes over the weekend, having the Greysac alongside on the Saturday probably.

Like Wrighty, I may have to miss you guys on Skype. I'm drinking the Beaucastel from a 375ml, but will also give it a nice, long decanting.

OK, a couple of days to go before VCTE II! To recap on the idea: We have four wines chosen for the occassion:

2003 Château Greysac http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=244108
2003 E. Guigal Gigondas http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=242569
2003 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=284322
2004 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=135669

The drinking window for these are Friday November 7 to Sunday November 9. You may choose yourself how you want to taste the wines (with food or without) and in what order. Tasting notes should be published on CT on Sunday evening, not before (so as not to influence each other! ). For those of us who want to really get into the community aspect of this, we will have a Skype chat conference on Saturday November 8. To join the Skype chat conference, send me a chat to my Skype username niklasw_ct and I will add you to the community chat. I will log into my account around 1 pm GMT, but will probably not be actively on the chat until later in the afternoon. I will however be around the house, so anybody wanting to join in will be joined in quickly! We will then taste the 4 wines together starting at 7 pm GMT (which is 9 pm local time for me in Finland, 2 pm in Eastern US and 11 am in Western US). Perhaps the order of the wines above is a good order for tasting them? We can spend 20-30 minutes per wine, if we find enough to say about each.

I'm looking forward to (virtually) meeting many of you again and I hope there are new people wanting to join in!

Bottles moved from horizontal to vertical! Although I don't expect much sediment in any of the wines...tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, Beaucastel, here I come!

If my puffy/sore throat doesn't subside by sometime this weekend I'm going to have to drop the Beaucastel off my weekend drinking list.  I will stick with the Greysac no matter what, however.

Couldn't find the Amarone or Guigal ... nonetheless, excited about the Greysac and crossing all my fingers and toes that my condition allows me to pop the Beau as well!

Pulled mine from the fridge last night.

I'm planning on a glass or two of both tonight.  Vacuum seal the Greysac and just cork the Beaucastel, revisit on Saturday and then finish the dregs (although I doubt there will be any) on Sunday.

Will log onto Skype tonight or tomorrow so I can chat with any early birds on Saturday, probably while I fight for the TV with my daughter to watch the Arsenal vs. Man Utd game.

They're open! Poured a glass of each and had half the glass of Greysac. All I'll say is a good start.

Wrighty - I am feeling jealous already.
I wont be joining the fun this time.  However, I had the E.Guigal 2003 about 2 weeks back - I will be interested to see your comments on that.

I opened two of the four a week ago for dinner, the other two will have to wait for my return from Greece. However, while I won't tell you which two I can say that both were excellent and one, in particular, evolved quite nicely over the evening. I decanted one for about two hours, the other for 90 minutes. Poured both back in their respective bottles and then brought them to a BYOB restaurant. Well worth the effort.
