I think you'll find that rebuilding in the new place is a little more fun.

For the next event why not let everyone who is pretty sure they will attend select one choice.
You can then select additional wines from others choices (a longer list than normal).
Evertyone is guaranteed at least one wine in the tasting!
L.

Hi,

We're gonna do the selection for the next event a little different.  The plan is French whites since we haven't done any whites yet. One from Bordeaux, one from Burg, one from Rhone and a sticky.   We should be able to find a lot of common wines there.  I'll start another thread on it after the discussion for this past weekends event dies down.  The date range is February.

Good idea on the whites.  I think it could be interesting to see at what temperature the wines will be served at for the white wine session.  While reds are more or less constantly served at the same temperature I think it could be a good session for  the people to describe the white tasting notes in relation to the temperature of the wine and how it impacts taste.

Having seen what others posted, I am glad to see my (rookie) opinions are pretty close to others - especially J2K on the Amarone's dessert-like qualities.

gbm  - Wrote my tasting note and held it until later and also noticed the uniformity in opinion.  Pretty cool that us "rookies" can be more consistent than the pro's.  Niklas, you and I really shared similar interpretations.  :)   I like how the three of us breakdown our scores  - it reveals that I thought more of the aroma

Well, here are my notes on the Beaucastel. Pretty high score, but after having quite a few vintages of Beaucastel, this is probably one of the lowest, if not the lowest scored one so far. I had a 2004 from a 750ml just about a year back, and that was showing much better. So I can understand where Rob is coming from with his score.

9/11/2008 rated 92 points: Sunday dinner at Liang Kee Teochew Restaurant (Robertson Walk, Singapore): This 375 ml was popped as part of the Cellartracker Virtual Community Tasting II on Saturday, and I brought the remainder down to dinner to go with the duck, and it certainly went really well. Served blind, everyone on the table spotted this as a wine of some breeding, but it has really shut down quite a bit from the last time I tried it about a year back. It is now super-tight. The nose was all hot stones and bramble when I first popped it, with underlying dark berries and some savoury meat - very complex and challenging, but in a lurking subdued way, nowehere near as expressive as older Beaucastels or even the last bottle of 2004 that I had. On the second day, it began to show a little perfumed flowers, dark berries, and more bramble. The palate was dense and concentrated as expected but, refecting its vintage, clean as a whistle, with bright, juicy acidity bringing a really nice sense of elegance. As with the nose, there was lots of hot stones and other minerally notes, along with savoury meatiness and some underlying dark fruits undergirded by a layering of really fine tannins. On the second day, the intense brooding flavours and slight edginess integrated to reveal some licorice, more berries and meat - almost a touch of light blackberry jam here. Acid had dropped quite a bit though. Typically long Beaucastel finish, with bittersweet minerals and liberal dash of pepper and just the lightest touch of heat. All in all, this showed as a classy wine, full and concentrated, but perhaps lacking the richness of better vintages. I would not approach another bottle for a good half a decade at least.

craig,
gd luck with the cellar rebuild ... are you going to do anything different in the new place? (or does your set-up not afford anything in the way of change/flexibility?)

I did have an opportunity to pop an '03 Greyasc this past weekend ... I just posted my TN ... was a bit surprised at how light it was ... pretty much everyone else I was drinking with liked it a bit more than I ... both myself and my friend, David, who's studying for his somm. exam thought there was much more Cab. Fran. in the blend than there actually is ... a very interesting Bdx, if not my style.

I held-off on the Beaucastel (sorry) due to a lingering puffy throat ... I probably could have opened it and analyzed it well-enough, but I'm not sure my condition would have allowed me to truly savor it as I'd like ... as always, CT will get a TN as soon as it is consumed.

Thanks everybody for the notes! It's been an interesting read, and I am surprised at how consistent we are pointwise! Maybe there is some idea there after all...

My note reflects the same perception and even recommend it as a lighter and less sweet option to a port or a sticky.

Rob - wonder if your experience with the CdP was related to the bottle size.

I drank from a 375 as well and while I seemed to enjoy this a bit more than Rob, had a similar experience with the heat in particular.  Look at Paul S note as well.  He drank from the 375 and seemed to get a bit of heat as well.

Looking at the others (who don't mention the bottle size in their notes, so I assume they are 750), none mention the heat.  Interesting.

Definitely no heat at all in my 750 ml bottle, unlike in the Amarone at first. But even there it disappeared after a while.

Rating the Beaucastel was tough for me.  I think I expected more out of it then what I got.  I've had a lot of CdP lately at many different price points and where this fits in, it just doesn't fit in (if that makes any sense).

Thanks, the new cellar will be in the old cistern of the house and completely enclosed by the fieldstone foundation and bricks on the other walls.  The floor is earth and will be cemented in and the sides sealed.  Will insulate the ceiling and put an outdoor grade door on.  The area is slightly larger so I will just HAVE to put a few more racks in, darn.  Lots of work but it will likely be better than the present one.  It is naturally very cool and moist.

How's this for sad geekiness  : am I the only one to sort my own notes by the number of views they get...I'm amazed how fast the Beaucastel has climbed in 2 days. It's already on the first page and will surely become the most viewed note I have ever written within a very short period! Ahh, the things we do to become famous

Beaucastel is a very popular wine so everyone who has it sees your writeup.  At least that's my impression of how that works.

Sure, there are over 2700 bottles in CT, so that's a lot of people looking at the notes. Apparently the first famous wine I have tasted!

uhh..  you did have a 71 Haut Brion..  That's pretty famous and cool since it is your (and my) birth year.

Don't the 375's mature a little quicker?  Could it be that they also go dumb quicker?

Kudo's for the suggestion of whites for the next VCTE.  Interesting that, given a view of your cellar (which I commend), you don't have many.

It is generally accepted that 375s mature more quickly so that is entirely possible.  I have one more 375 of the beaucastel and whenever I get to that, I'll be sure to have my note here as a comparison.

I generally don't keep a lot of whites "in stock", especially during winter.  I see little reason to age them and have them take up space in the vinotheque, but that is pretty hypocritical of me to say as some of the best experiences I have had with whites were with some that had age on them.

I am looking forward to the next tasting with whites.  It should be easier for us to find common wines and I will try a slightly different method of building the list this time.  More on that later this week when I start the new thread.

Well yeah, but she doesn't post here.

I was asking in regards to those who are actually on the board...not those who constantly make fun of me for being on here so much.

Holy crap!  Are you old enough to drink?

I feel ancient now and I thought I was doing well born in 1970.  Now I just feel like a dirty old man.

Snap Paul - for age, not feeling like a dirty old man!

There's only a spread of 10 years for those willing to post, my guess is we're pretty much in the middle if we had the full spread.
