I casually began about five years ago, I had maybe 20-30 bottles of mostly run-of-the-mill mass market wines with a couple bottles of better Champagne tossed in. The bug really bit about 18 months ago. I've now got 69 bottles cellared and 12 pending delivery. It ranges from about a dozen bottles that are just shy of "bum wine" in quality or past their prime to some Quintessa, Opus One, vintage Dom Perignon, Insignia, etc. I expect to cellar 24-36 additional bottles of top quality wine in 2009--the budget isn't going to allow for much more than that and still leave some to drink. At this point I'm concentrating on the Napa Valley wines, it's a good starting point and something I feel like I'm just begining to really get a pretty good grip on. Once I'm comfortable with those, I'll probably move on the the South African reds, as I've had a few that have left me staggered they were so unexpectedly incredible. (I've also got two cases remaining of five that was donated for a fundraiser, but I don't count that as "mine" and am hoping that the charity can find a good way to use it to raise more money--and get it out of my closet.)
