So last night I had two bottles of different wine, each with about a half-glass left in it. Suddenly, I hear classical music and see Maestro raising the baton, or stem as it were, conducting the "Experimental Symphony". The players: 2002 Alain Paret St. Joseph Rochecourbe No. Rhone Syrah 12.5%alc 2004 Erik Banti Carato Toscana IGT 75% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 5% Cab 13%alc The resulting fugue was indeed greater than the sum of it's parts. The Toscana softened the edges of the Syrah and induced a richer fruit and more elegant finish. The Syrah seemed to give backbone, structure, spice, and acidity to the IGT. I preferred the blend over either wine individually. Something also tells me that it would be very important to keep the alc% as close to one another as possible to appreciate and discern the various elements. Fun stuff!
