I didn't really start learning about wine until I spent five days in Bordeaux (I was running the Marathon du Medoc).
After that it's been going full steam.

How was that marathon?  It is one I would love to "run".  I guess it is more of a stagger.

Can you stick another post up and let everyone know what your experience was like?

At about 21 I went to Paris for a week where I was first introduced to wine.  I tried to continue drinking wine when I returned home, but being in college and early in my career money was a little tight.  So the habit broke for a couple of years until I was about 25 (5 yrs ago).  Since then my tastes (and price point) has changed quite a bit.  I used to be content chugging Yellow Tail and now I couldn't imagine putting that plonk in my mouth.

I really got over the edge during my first visit to Sonoma about five years ago.  The whole experience really opened my mind to the possibilities.

I don't think that I honestly started to appreciate wine until I was around 28 years old.  I had been drinking it since I lived in Germany around my 23rd birthday.  Yet, I had no clue what wine could offer...until I had a wine that shocked me with quality and price...that was the one moment for me.  Today about 3-4 years later I find myself trying to find the balance as I work to build an evenly distributed cellar that has enough wines to fill my urge to study, enjoy, and learn along the way.

I began drinking wine when I was a very young adult, as a boyfriend at the time worked at a liquor store and would bring home something new to try almost every night.  I never really learned to appreciate the nuances and develop a decent understanding of it until I was into my late 30s.  Now well into my 40's I'm still continuing to learn, and still feel like I am at the very edge of the learning curve.

Anne,

Understand exactly how you feel. It seems like the more I learn, the less I know.

My father opened a bottle of '61 Latour when I was probably 11 or 12 and gave me a few sips. I doubt I really appreciated the taste at the time, but just listening to him talk about it had me enthralled.

Reading this I think you'll have to upgrade your ideas for his 40th anniversary.
What about birth years - some good late '40's 1st growths to consider.

It would be nice if I could afford it. Luckily, '61 Latour is not what he normally drank. It was a special botttle that he had held onto for years and finally opened as he was afraid it had not been cellared properly.

In any event, he was born in '44.

Started appreciating wine and women at roughly the same time, and I now can say with some certainty that I understand wine.

Those are my finger marks on the bottle before my wife slapped my wrist.
