Indian food and wine very rarely mix but when you have about 3 litres of whisky to drink per person at an indian  wedding then it matters very little.

Since I was in Jamaica, it was Jamaican Rum (mmmmm).  Which actually went quite well with....well everything.  But I see your point.

I learned my lesson long ago. No good stuff at big holiday dinners. The challenge is that there are always two or three who appreciate a decent bottle and expect that given that they know I like wine. We've gotten pretty good at setting aside a bottle in an inconspicuous location at the beginning of the afternoon for those who will appreciate it.

In a Michael Broadbent article he called these 'sideboard wines' which I thought as an apt description.

As for Johnny Walker, would that be all of Asia Paul? Bit like saying Europeans love Carlseberg! Personally don't like either but the higher end JW are supposed to be pretty good.

The Thais were drinking 200 million pounds of Johnny Walker Black Label 15 years back, and almost as much Chivas.
Yes the Asians like the well branded product.

I have an image in my head now of a moody and argumentative mother at Thanksgiving making your life hell

"Why can't I have the 1982 latour?"
"Because you'll put ice cubes in it - you can have the 2 buck chuck mother!!!"

Actually she's the opposite.  She'll ask, "How much will a bottle of that run?" and if the answer is more than about $15, she'll tell me "No thanks, I'd choke on it."  So now I'll either tell her, "I don't remember" or just pull out $15 bottles of wine when she's visiting.   She does refrain from adding ice to her wine around me these days, but I know that she's still drinking it from the jug, over ice, in jelly glasses at home.

Back to the thread - was the world as happy when Maggie Thatcher became PM? First female leader of the UK and back in the days of no equal opportunities. She obviously has her detractors now (and I'm not getting into politics here), I wonder which way Obama will go?

It's because of people like him that you get/need Barack's.
Does he audit the books of Financial institutions too?
I'm afraid with friends like that you can't afford too many enemies.
Perhaps Eric's right after all, on all counts.

Well, here's how a friend of mine is responding

"Fellow Business Executives:

As the CFO of a business that employees 140 people, I have resigned
myself to the fact that Barrack Obama will be our next President, and
that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way.

To compensate for these increases, I figure that the Clients will have
to see an increase in our fees to them of about 8% but since we cannot
increase our fees right now due to the dismal state of our economy, we
will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been
eating at me for a while, as we believe we are family here and I didn't
know how to choose who will have to go.
So, this is what I did. I strolled thru our parking lot and found 8
Obama bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these
folks will be the first to be laid off. I can't think of a more fair way
to approach this problem. These folks wanted change; I gave it to them.
If you have a better idea, let me know. "  He's always been very pro-active

and this is why this is a pure propaganda brought to you by Joe Six Braincells and Sarah "Where is the shopping mall in Africa" Palin.

The alleged author of this trash did not hire people because he is a world savior of working class, he hired people because without those people he can not run his business. He lays people off based not on their qualifications but on their political affiliations. This is Communism, Nazism or Republicanism of today, make your pick.

Anybody who takes this for it's face value can stand next to this McCain's supporter:
