Just like an Agatha Christie novel.

Or a game of Cludo?

Cos did it, on the left bank, with a large amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Two more whites, tied for #1 in 1998

There's a Burgundy right there! The next bottle (looking at the shape) should be either a Burg or Rhone or a new world variant.

I had the Seghesio Old Vine Zin recently. While I agree it's nothing awesomely special, I thought it was a cracking wine for its price.

Wow!!  A lot of people I have heard were speculating that the 05 Pontet Canet was going to be number 1.  I am surprised to see it at #7.

Looking at the shape of the bottles and labels on the website I was thinking it was #2 (I know, it's geeky to say that I am guessing on based on this, but I find it fun).

Since a lot of us have just recently had the 04 Beaucastel, what are your thoughts on the 05 being #8?  Now I am curious to try one of these to see how the two vintages differ.  WS talks about the 05 being "dense and explosive," which I didn't really find in the 04.

Since I held off on the '04 last weekend...and I have two bottles of the '05...I guess I have a good reason to do the experiment.  You'll have to wait for (American) Thanksgiving though - unless someone beats me to it.  I need a good reason to pop those two on the same day...and a couple of football games (again, American) to spread them over.

I had the 05 Beaucastel just a little while ago and I thought it was quite fantastic despite it's young age and much better then the 04.

As for Pontet-Canet being 7th, that's a big surprise to me.  I would have expected that to be much higher.

I wonder how many cases of these wines the WS employees have been buying leading up to the release of the results?

I just came over here from viewing WS #'s 8 & 7 ... with Pontet Canet at #7 I can only imagine there must be a couple raging threads over at WS and eBob forums today alot of people called Pontet Canet as #1.  We have to remember that all the editors re-taste the wines before making the Top 100, therefore some wines (such as the P-C, apparently) are not going to "score" as highly as when one individual editor reviewed it months prior.  Perhaps Suckling overshot his mark with the P-C?  I wouldn't know, I haven't tasted it.

Bear in mind that they have the release price on the PC at $100, which is getting up there in relation to other high scoring wines such as the DM and MSE. both of which were released quite a bit cheaper.  That might have had some bearing on it being down in #7.  At least it won't result in a big price hike like what happens with #1.

wow ... I didn't realize WS's release price on the P-C was $100 ... I assumed it was closer to $60.  That may very well explain it's surprise #7 showing.

Still praying DM doesn't win ... although that would bring me some vindication with the wife, who was a bit taken aback when I bought 5 of 'em.  Even at the $50-$60 I paid for 'em, I think that's a great deal, especially if it's better than the '04, which I hear it is.

That's going to be a fantastic deal if it gets #1.  It will likely increase quite significantly.  Sell 2 of them after it gets number one and I would bet you will be able to drink at least 2 of the other 3 for free.

Very good point ... but I really like the wine ... I probably wouldn't drink a couple others for "free," but rather buy a couple bottles of some other wine that is more expensive than I'd normally pop for ... or, I'll just keep the DM and enjoy the spectacle of opening a WOTY each time I pop one.  ... the WOTY designation would make it a bit more glamorous at a dinner party, for example.

I think that a release price of $100 is not too bad given that I paid $80/bottle for futures in 2006.

The Beaucastel 05 I tasted was dark, dense, concentrated, and tight as a drum.

If it develops as expected it will be a beauty, but not until 2012 at least (more like 2015++ before you enter a smooth drinking phase).

That's WAY too much.  If I had the foresight to buy more then 1 I would sell you some at much less of a markup.  :)

Bob, Total Wine in Tustin has it for $130.  Not that this is all that much better, but it is one of the cheapest around.

Also had the 05 Beaucastel.  Tighter than a Nun's cheeks but should be good in a few (5?) years.  Local distributor offering 06 for next year (DEC 09) delivery at about $90 USD on the shelf.  Too bad the P C didn't go higher.  Does the WOTY look like a Gaja to anyone else?

Gaja's are too pricy aren't they?

From a WS prospective, if they are going to hype 05 bordeaux like they did then they need an 05 bordeaux as number 1.  Just like last year when they hyped 05 CdP.

It does not have the traditional Gaja bottle shape...

Although Gaja does use a variety of bottle shapes too, so who knows...
