Only one box of 6 made it to my corner of the world - you are lucky to be able to go buy it on whim.

Was trying to find the link to the last 10 years Top 10, I thought they did that electronically in years past but maybe it was only in print. Were any WOTY as limited as the Sperss? Seems they would go with a higher production wine...

The label does seem to fit unless they are trying to throw people off. With all the hype of the '05 Bordeaux I would be surprised if it isn't Bdx, but might be something to throw people off.

my gut tells me production of Sperss is too low to garner WOTY

i have drank the 05 Pontet Canet several times and it is a very good wine......I have two TN of this wine in CT........at 160 i would drink other 05s like Monbousquet or Fleur Cardinale over it though.  I got in it at EP pricing so for me it was a great value.

I still think Cos will be the top one..............it is the best Cos I have ever had and i thought it was as good as any First I had in 05.  My top three were Margaux Cos and Pavie..........fourth was Ausone.

PP - have you had the 05 Malescot St. Exupery?  Lots of people have been raving about that one.

yes rob I have had the MSE and I have some coming to me............still has not arrived..........But my top ten of 05 is all bdx............the Zin listed at ten is a dog to me.........the COL is another head scratcher............Dooker is a dumper to me..........But if you can score some Cos.............trust me when I tell you this.............this wine will be re rated soon to 100 points...........its that good.  The 2005 Margaux is now the top wine I have ever had in my life.    The Cos and Margaux to me were superalitve efforts and may go down in history as the best ever wines produced by these houses.

My tasting note on CT is there.  Pavie and Pavie Macquin are in my top ten too........Ausone is there.  PC made it..........Monbousquet Valdaraud also in it.............L'Evangile and MSE also in it.  my other wines i loved form 05 is the RS from Margaux (huge sleeper) and LLC, Ducru Beaucaillou and two more sleeper picks..............Smith Haut Lafite  Clos Fourtet      and one sticky............... Chat Guirard (white bdx)

I have bought so much 05 its crazy............every week I am buying more.  Many of my friends are selling because of the market and I keep adding.  I bought some Fleur Cardinale today from a bankruptcy auction............

Rob if you can find it get some Domaine De L'A Cotes du Castillion 2005.  I got lucky to taste this when I was in Bdx by a close friend.........i ordered 5 cases...........at 28 dollars a bottle...........this wine I just recieved this weekend and I am telling you it is better than 75% of the classsed wines.............I will add a TN soon.............I will rate it a 96 or 97   unreal value for the points I am giving it.  I have never had this wine except for the 05...........and my gosh it is great

So what other American wines or Italian wines will be on the list?  When looking back at past top 10's there is always a couple Italian and American wines.  Will there be a Napa cab on the list?  What Italian grape will reign supreme this year?  Will a Spanish wine sneak in the top 10?  Where will a champagne, dessert or white land?

Pavie,
I'm assuming you're referring to 2005 Château D'Aiguilhe, right?  Thanks.

If it is ... this is ironic:
Tasted by RoundersRob on 3/15/2008: Probably the most 'un' bordeaux like of the 2005s that we tasted on the same day. This had too much oak and the alcohol was a bit out of balance. Almost tasted like a Syrah. Didn't like this one much at all.

I remember that.  It was from a Bordeaux tasting at a local shop.  Both Jeremy and I thought that one tasted like Syrah.

France is on the board now- Rhone in 8th and a Bordeaux in 7th...

I'm a little disappointed that the Pontet Canet only ran in 7th. I thought it was a great wine when I last tasted it, certainy outperforming a lot of the more expensive Bordeaux in 2005. Rather surprised by the Beaucastel as well. As good as it is, I thought some of its similar priced or slightly more expensive brethren like Usseglio's Mon Aieul or Janasse's VV outperformed it. Still though - both are cracking bottles.

I must say that I am one of the rare dissenters when it comes to the 2005 MSE though [waiting for stones to hit me now]. It was clearly a good wine but, like with many of the Margaux in 2005, not very Margaux-like. It could well have been a good St Julien. I generally prefer the bottles of 2000 and 1996 vintage that I have tried from the more modern MSEs. Right now, the best drinking vintage might well be the 1990, which is a really nice, classic wine. My note for the 2005 is here: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=224139

Woo hoo, tasted the La Crau last year and loved it, picked up a 1.5, two 750's and four splits...  Be nice to watch where it goes...

About time I hit this years pics, I am pathetically light on 05 Bordeaux...

Wow.  This was a nice pull huh?  Did you have some inside info on this or was it purely an educated guess?

I remember this wine.  It really was like drinking a new world Syrah blend.  Here was my note...

Note is based on small approximately 1 oz tasting, no score. This was a little hard to pin down. This is a much more New World style bordeaux than the others in the flight. The nose was full of ripe berries, and the taste was much of the same on the first go around. If I was tasting blind I probably would have guess this was a Syrah or Syrah based blend. In the second taste the Cab Franc decided to show up, with its herb and tar flavors balancing out the fruit a little. The finish was a little disappointing, as it was like an oak bomb exploded in my mouth, complete with the heat from the alcohol. Not bad, but would likely not search this one out even at the relatively affordable price.

Damn....  that Pio Cesare was at Costco this past summer for around $45 a bottle.

I've had mixed results with that CdP.  The 01 was really great but I think I had a bad bottle with the 03 and haven't bought it since.  It's usually a decent price point compared to stuff like Beaucastel.

Rob,

Give the 03 another try - it really is good juice.  You must of had one with emotional problems.

Cheers

Given that my notes speak of a total lack of fruit, that's definitely a possibility.

Wish I had the time, inclination, and budget to speculate in this kind of thing. The local Costco had 05 Guiraud and Clerc Milon for around $55 today. I've already got all I need of these in the cellar, but this sure seems a likely pair for the top 5, although I found WS's score a bit high for the CM.
