Has anyone had the 2005 Rausan-Segla (http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=222328)?

Garagiste just did an offer on it

Wish I had the time, inclination, and budget to speculate in this kind of thing. The local Costco had 05 Guiraud and Clerc Milon for around $55 today. I've already got all I need of these in the cellar, but this sure seems a likely pair for the top 5, although I found WS's score a bit high for the CM.
Those both are screaming buys...........but I will say this...........the economy is going to be worse than we all thought.........so I do see the price of wine coming down............even the 05 Vintage.  The interesting thing I have observed is the regional buying of the 05 vintage.  I travel alot and in some cities like NY and Chi and LA find decent 05's is tough............but it seems in Dallas and Las Vegas parts of northern Fla and Virgina I can find outstanding buys in serious numbers............I just saw Pontet Canet last week for 81 dollar in Dallas.............and Duhart Milon in LV for 54 dollars.............shocking to me.

Hollowine,

I may have been having an off day, but I was not really impressed by an 05 Rauzan tasted recently. Likely at an awkward stage, but I remember a fundamental lack of depth and elegance, despite the evident quality of the fruit. But then again, I favor a classic style Bordeaux, which this was not.

Rob,

Give the 03 another try - it really is good juice.  You must of had one with emotional problems.

Cheers

The 2001 La Crau was really nice, although just a little bit unexciting. If that was anything to go by, the 2005 should be a cracker. Anyone tried this before?

Paul,

I'm strongly considering bringing an '01 VT La Crau to a CdP offline in December ... how long would you recommend decanting?  thanks

I was picking up a wine order one eve and they had an open bottle on the counter, they poured me a taste...I obviously didn't have the time or mindset to take notes, but I know I immediately asked what they had for sale. I just missed getting a 3.0, but picked up a 1.5 and a couple 750's

I'm still somewhat new to CdP, it's one of the newer regions I'm learning about and expanding my palate and cellar accordingly, but I liked it.

Got Three bottles confirmed yesterday, waiting to hear if my request for a full OWC also got ok'd...

Took a chance on a Colonel Lawrence play with the OWC...guess we will see...

I've had #3 before (different vintage).  Quite a good QPR.

So - how can MSE not be #1 given that it was rated 97 and cheaper then the Rauzan Segla?

Rob you have a note on the 05 Quinta.  (12/23/07).

I still don't think the "label" is big enough, which may be a silly assumption, but it tends to hold true when they reveal the other wines.  I am thinking it's the Melchor, or as a long shot based on price, the Cos.

I happen to be in Lisbon today. I'll go out tonight and see if I can buy the 2005 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines here before the price hike hits.

Maestro,
It's an excellent wine.  Give a healthy decant if you drink in the near-term.

I am nearly speechless about #'s 2, 3, and 4.  Expected 4, figured 2 might make an appearance ... 3 is a total shocker to me ... don't get me wrong, it's a great wine, and deserving of its spot ... but this clearly means Malescot or DM is going to get the shaft ... I will be amazed if DM is held out of the Top 10 ... we shall see tomorrow!

Both DM and MSE deserve top 5 spots.  With that Rauzan Segla being #2 I don't know how MSE can be #1 given that it is from the same region and had the same rating but just slightly lower production but certainly a lower release cost.  It's probably #11.

That was my immediate thought as well, but then I started waffling with thoughts of "this is the year of '05 Bdx" running through my head ... i still don't understand how DM could be shut-out though ... I will be floored if it's not #1 ... not to mention very happy, as prices for future vintages won't shoot-up as quickly as if it does garner #1.

i thought that sticky would make the top ten...........its a good one.  Infact many Sauternes in 05 I think are alot better than some other vintages...........I think this 05 Vintage could rival 01 in a few yrs.

Back at the hotel in Lisbon.

Secured three bottles of the...

2005 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines

And purchased one bottle of this wine to drink tonight at the hotel, as I found it in my iPhone/Cor.kz/CT to have been given 91 points by drdebs. Drinking it now and it is very nice indeed. Drdebs' TN is right on the money, both on the rating and on the descriptors.

I went out and bought the last bottle of the Quinta Crasto Douro at Hi Time Wine today.   Bought it this morning for $36.99- and picked it up this afternoon- the aisle was empty.  I figured a #3 wine for under $40, why the hell not.  I'm all caught up in the hype.  If Napacabs still has the Pio next week I'll buy that as well (I think $41-42 a bottle).  I have to drive out to Chino/Ontario areas a couple times a week for work and I don't want to pay shipping.

On a side note on closeout at Wine Ex I got a bottle on the Jimenez Landi Tinto for $9.99... to me that is the best deal in town.  I had order their remianing stock of 2 bottles, but when I went to pick it up they only had 1 bottle left.

Hi-time has the 375 of the Guiraud as well.  I am thinking I might go grab these two.

Damn Wine Spec and your top 10 wines!!!  I just rechecked Napacabs.com website and they now have 22 bottles of the Pio and raised the price to $49.95 (the other day showed stock of 2 bottles and 41.99).  The owner owns a Italian Rest in Chino as well and probably moved stock and raised the price now knowing that it is a Top 10 wine!!!  I guess you snooze and you lose!

No, I don't feel $50 is bad when the average price is $53 on CT and now knowing it is $66 in Oregon.  Sorry for complaining.

On another note it would be interesting to see what the average % mark up on wines after being named a top 100 wine and also a Top 10 wine.  My guess is 15% as I feel the Seghesio Zin will go from 17.99 to now around 21.99.

Okay, I'm going to get in trouble for this but I can't help it.

I have to say that I find this thread amusing. There always appear to be no shortage of people here who piss all over eBob, WS, etc for their biases and ratings. We now have a thread that's reached four pages in lightening speed that essentially reflects being completely sucked in by the WS top wines list. I don't mean to be judgmental or critical because I will be the first to admit I use CT, WA, WS, and other ratings extensively to help me explore wines to buy and what to pay. I just find it amusing.

I should also admit that the thread has reinforced for me how little I know about wine. I'm completely blown away by how you all can narrow down the possibilities and, in some cases, be practically spot on relative to predicting the winners. Very impressive. I only hope to drink enough to achieve such abilities!

pbm,

the reason this thread is 4 pages long is because we all find this thread amusing ... same can be said for the WS Top 10/100 ... it's merely a source of amusement, and in some cases a warning of what some of us will not be able to afford and/or find in the future.
