PBM, you are spot on to my thoughts- I thought of sending a similar email the other day as well.  The Pio guess blew me away- someone knows their wines or is a mole within the ranks of WS.  My weight scale for helping me explore wine is CT 1st, WS 2nd & WA 3rd.  I can kinda see the Bordeaux guesses... but not the Pio (only because of my limited knowledge).

What are peoples thoughts on there only being 1 American wine and it being a Zin in the top 10?  A Portugal wine as well?  I will be interesting to what varietal is on the list the most- other than Bordeaux for the Top 100?  What US Cab will rank the highest?  I want answers people!!!  J/K.  I what to see who can guess right the most for the rest of the Top 100?

1st US Cab or Cab blend?
Varietal on the list most other than Red Bordeaux?
Oregon Pinot Noir?
Sangio? Chianti or Brunello 1st? -this one is for you Maestro.

I'm truely interested to see what people think.

I must confess I don't really understand the criteria that WS uses to decide that a wine is eligible for the top-100 list.

If they include Chianti wines in their top-100 list then I could guess that the Felsina Rancia has a fair chance of coming on the top of that list.

The Brunello wines have a clear disadvantage against Chianti at the moment, as the Brunello wines from the spectacular 2004 vintage are not yet out, whereas the Chianti wines have been available from both 2004 and 2005 (Brunello DOCG regulations, you know).

Still, the "2003 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino" is a wine to die for, but I am not sure if its production is considered too small for the top-100.

Another Chianti that coud do well is the Volpaia Coltassala 2004. But again, very limited production.

If Suckling's taste is similar to mine, then Chianti might fare quite well in the top-100 list once they are allowed to consider the 2006 vintage, especially once the Riserva wines are out. The 2006 vintage has been more kind to Chianti than to the other Northern Italian areas.

Paul,

I'm strongly considering bringing an '01 VT La Crau to a CdP offline in December ... how long would you recommend decanting?  thanks

That's a tough question - the problem with CdPs is that they are so volatile in the decanter - they almost seem to change minute to minute and many points in evolution are actually interesting. Saying that though, a good half and hour to 45 minutes at the very least would really do the wine some good. You can then take it from there and see how it goes. Here are my notes if you're interested. We decanted this for 20 minutes and drank it over an hour and a half: http://www.cellartracker.com./wine.asp?iWine=3501

On #2-4 though - I must say I am really surprised. I liked the Guiraud 2005, but found it just a little too sweet, nowhere near as nicely balanced as 2001 or 2004. Granted, my notes and scores are lower than the general consensus: http://www.cellartracker.com./wine.asp?iWine=218917

Just got the e-mail:

Casa Lapostolle
Clos Apalta Colchagua Valley 2005
96 points / $75
5,987 cases made
Chile

Since its outstanding debut 1997 vintage, Casa Lapostolle's Clos Apalta bottling has helped to establish Chile as a premier red-wine region. Owner Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle and her team created a blend of Chile's unique Carmenère variety, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the estate's oldest vines in Colchagua's Apalta sub-valley, then kept refining: fermenting in smaller lots, hand-destemming berries and constructing a gravity-flow winery. All this came to fruition in the long, warm, dry 2005 vintage, easily Chile's modern best. Marnier and new winemaker Jacques Begarie blended in 4 percent Petit Verdot for the first time, adding aroma and color. Rich and velvety, the 2005 Clos Apalta should reward cellaring. The wine's price has remained relatively modest through the years.

I already had a bottle of this wine earlier this year.  http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=426833
It was a good wine, but didn't strike me in the WOTY category.  It is a crowd pleaser though.  I purchased it at Cosco for $54--you can kiss that price goodbye!

Yes, another Rolland creation.  Bob, are you trying to start another conspiracy theory?

Oh, man - would I love to!  Problem is here, we have a combination of true genius and hapless lemmings.  I need only the lemmings
Having said that, I purchased #4, 5, 6, 8, 9 this week.

Figures.  I usually by this wine every year and passed on the 05 due to the price hike from $50 to $65.

Stop motivating me, Craig!  Now I'm picturing how much fun it would be to blind taste 'em (by type, of course).  Wouldn't that be great promotion for a wine shop to do?

Yay! [and wow!] Very glad to see DM didn't grab #1 spot ... even though it was most deserving, IMO.

I have the Pontet-Canet.  I already drank one of the others.  I have two that should have been top ten but are not.  :(

I normally buy the Clos Apalta every year and actually have a couple of 04s but passed this year as the price went up $15 from last year.  Now Almaviva is the only Chilean wine I buy, which is also fabulous so I don't feel like I am missing much by not having the Apalta.  I would never buy the Apalta to resell anyway.  Even as WOTY, the demand won't be as bad as it it were the 05 Cos or something like that.

Got the Zin, the Aussie and the Rhones (VT from 375 all the way to 6 litre) but was disapointed in the Rhone selections.  The two chosen are good but there is much better juice from this region to be had.  Glad that they don't like burgundy - prices are high enough already.  Nice to see Chile get the nod.

hmmm...no DM for you?  I've never tried the Almaviva, how does it compare to DM?  I, too, will be surprised to see a large spike in the price of Clos Apalta.

I've had every vintage of DM since 00 and I have one 04 left and two 05s.  The 04s have really disappointed me though and now I have a mental block on the remaining 04 and 05s I have so I'll probably not drink them for a while.  I may still purchase it but Almaviva is just so damn good that it's my goto for Chile premium vino.

I already had the VT in several sizes, picked up a few bottles of Pio since it was there and hadn't been marked up, and got three of the #2 R-S the day before it was named.

Grafstrb,

The Rhone is imported by European Imports LLC of Charleston, NC.  The local distributor in the Seattle area is A&B but they are out.  Seems some guy in Anacortes bought it all.

Cheers

went to L.A. Wine Co. today to pick-up my 3 splits of '05 guiraud I purchased the day before WS's 2, 3, 4 reveal (yes, I did make the purchase b/c I thought it would fall somewhere in there) ... I'm glad I did buy some the day before b/c L.A. wine co's 2+ cases they had just last week are totally gone now ... they still do have 750's for $59.99, if anyone's interested.  They also stocked up on the '04 Clos Apalta ... shrewd move, for sure (Rob, the '04 Clos Apalta is $54.95, btw ... if you care) ... while i was browsing around some guy came in and asked about it ... he clearly knew nothing about the wine ... i gotta wonder how many people are going to go rushing out to buy that wine and then end-up not liking it b/c of the high Carmenere content ... Carmenere seems, to me, to be a very polarizing grape ... methinks many a point chaser is going to be awfully disappointed with that wine ... too bad!
