J2K - I saw a lot of the whites close by you perhaps in New York or something but I am not sure how the Pennsylvania Booze Police feel about you crossing state lines.  :)

RR,
They don't like it as that would be "breaking the law". I'm surprised they don't have check points at the border.

Any last votes?  I'll close the polls Tuesday and then time to search out what you can find.

The first post has been updated with the results of the vote.  Here are the wines:

Whites
[W1] 2006 E. Guigal Condrieu (Rhone) http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=377781
[W3] 2007 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Drachenstein Riesling Dragonstone (Germany)  http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=524600
[W12] 2007 Fritz Haag Riesling (Germany) http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=508464

Red
[R3] 2005 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm (Aussie) http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=308534

For those that want to do the Tawny Port as the finisher, we will go with a 20 year Tawny and you are free to choose the producer.  Ideally I would like a few different ones to be chosen by people so we can compare notes on different producers. For example, I will probably try the Dows 20 year.  Someone else might want to try a Taylor, etc....

So I haven't participated in the prior two events, but might be interested in trying to join in on this one. Wondering how this usually plays out, is this typically tasting each of these wines in one sitting or over a couple days/weeks? In the past have most of you been able to find all of the wines you are tasting?

I already have the Dead Arm, I brought a few home from Oz with me last spring, and I've been looking for an excuse to pick up a Taylor 20 year Tawny. That would just leave the Whites, and since I do lean toward Riesling and Viognier when I do drink whites, this might be good experience for my Palate.

Got me thinking, I'll start checking stocks around Portland and see what I can find.

Scott

What we do is pick a weekend (Friday - Sunday) for tasting the wines picked.  In this case sometime in February. We then post the tasting notes to CT on the Sunday night so we don't influence each other's note writing.  We also do an optional, and quite fun, Skype chat during the Saturday where you can taste all the wines in a flight at that time and share your impressions online with everyone else on the chat.

I'll add that I agree that it is a great way to try wines which you may not have otherwise and open your eyes to new regions and producers.   Plus it is fun to hunt for the bottles.  :)

Thanks Rob.

FYI for those of you hunting, especially those of you in CA, Wine Exchange in Orange has all but the Haag (www.winex.com)

Only finding the 2006 Haag and the Dead Arm so far in Portland

I have seen the Leitz Dragonstone at a surprisingly large number of regular type wine shops and liquor stores as well as places like Cost Plus World Market, etc.

Just saw the Ramos Pinto 20 yr at Costco today, and while I haven't had their port yet, I am a big fan of their Douro.  I have heard that their port is even better, so I think I will go that direction.

Otherwise, looks like all the wines are at Wine Exchange, which is like 5 minutes from my house.  And at reasonable prices.  Kind of sad I don't have much of a hunt this time around, but nice that I don't have to pay for shipping this time around.

Happy hunting!

Had taken a punt on the Hamilton Russell in my last purchase, will have to drink another time now.  Dead Arm should be easier enough and haven't had one for a while, think the Fritz Haag is readily available as is the Guigal so should be able to enjoy 3 in HK while you're all asleep or having your breakfast in the US!

Off shopping again!

I was over optimistic. The Dead Arm's onto the 06 and I can only find the Fritz Haag. Will have to try some other outlets.

Same here - but reversed.  I can't find anything later than the '03 Dead Arm.  None of the other stuff is local.  I have a couple of other places to look, but I don't have high hopes.  I was sure the Guigal would be easy to find...

Gotta look past the borders of your state/country! I found the Guigal and Deadarm in a German internet wine shop (the joys of winesearcher.com). Ordered both and just got confirmation, so hopefully next week they will arrive.

Shipping wine in the states - especially the former Puritan colonies - can be problematic.  I try to keep it to NY or Conn, but I will branch out a little further if I can't find anything here.  At some point, though, the cost of shipping becomes prohibitive.  Especially if I have to order them from different stores and pay shipping on three or four packages.
------
Update:   Broke down and ordered all but the Dead Arm which I have tracked down nearby and will grab next week.

well,  I was happy with myself when I found the Fritz Haag at a LWS today ... thought it was a bit expensive at $27 ... then, I get home and realize I bought the wrong one ... oh, well, I guess I'll just be tasting that one or maybe the correct one, if I find it before the VCTE III.

Here's the one I bought: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=508486

I think that one is a step up from the one on the list isn't it?

i guess it's supposed to be one step up, yeah ... but at least one taster preferred the one we selected for the VCTE III ... soooo, I dunno.  I don't have any experience with Riesling outside of the horrible plonk around the $10 range that comes in the blue bottles, so I'm not sure it will really be of any consequence that i bought the "wrong" one, except everybody else will be tasting the "right" one ... I'll keep my eyes peeled for the "right" one and do a side-by-side if I do end-up finding the "right" one.

Think I've got two of them but think/hope there's a dupe on the Fritz Haag, otherwise I'm a half a step up
http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=508455 the tagged wine appears to have Trocken on the label as well but it's hard to tell.
Also got the Condrieu but still can't find an 05 Dead Arm (unless I get a magnum) or the Josef Leitz

And do we have a date yet?  Just realised I'm going to be in Germany the first weekend in Feb, but unlikely that I could join in as it's a working weekend - toy fair. Shame considering two of the wines are German - haven't found a decent German wine restaurant/shop in Nurnberg yet, any help from anyone?

Hmm, indeed, looks like a dupe. I have my Fritz Haag under this wine http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=508464 . I'll post this in the Wine errors forum.

Either weekend is fine for me - I probably won't be able to find time to Skype, though.  Finally picked up the Dead Arm...
