In the last several weeks I have had many opportunities to buy wines that are impossible to find here in the NW corner of the country - Dujac, DRC, Mont Luisant.  For me it has been more than just the price, which has been good to great, it is also just being able to get these wines.  I have gone from taking whatever I can get to picking and choosing.
Getting another 50 case locker at my local wine shop two weeks ago has helped but it is filling fast.

received a tip from someone in MN yesterday that 8 bottles of '05 Clos des Papes Rouge (750ml) are just sitting-out on the shelves of a LWS in Minneapolis.  This morning I called them ... the tip was accurate.  I am sending my father over there tonight to pick-up 3 for me.  The employee I spoke to said they'd been sitting there awhile.  This wine shouldn't be sitting on any wine store shelf, any where, especially for "awhile" .. and especially for $84.99 a bottle!!!

I didn't buy the tickets yet, but was planning from 11th to 16th. I'd rather travel on weekend when stock market is closed. I am flexable and can come any weekdays in January. Can we all get together?

Now I know why you are going to be out there that weekend!

I say go the following weekend.  That weekend can be crazy because it is also the same weekend as the Consumer Electronics Show.

I have been to that thing a couple of times.  And I am with you, I could have done without going even the just the second time.  It's not as exciting as one might think.

No - just not French wine.  Wasn't Mondavi from Minn?  If I remember the story correctly, the Italians living in Minn at the time couldn't get wine (or wine they liked) and they sent his family out to California to find grapes to be shipped back to the midwest.

kelp,

this is exactly what I [don't] need to be hearing right now ... I've now talked myself into buying 6 ... i'd get all of 'em but i really shouldn't be spending this money right now ... but a deal like this, geez!  The wine gods have been awfully kind to me this week [and awfully hard on the bank account].  Now if I could just get my father to pick-up his f'ing phone!

Great minds think alike.  I had this same conversation with Grafs in this thread

It is one of the few things I remember from a tour of the winery during my last trip to CA - almost 10 years ago!

Just read House of Mondavi a couple of months ago, and that kind of useless crap always sticks in my head

The economic times have not affected my buying decisions, however, the utter lack of space to put anything else has curbed my buying habits.  I will still be looking for great buys but will be very selective.

The bad economic times are upon us,
the working girls who are not married to the brain surgeons can't even afford wine and will just work for food.
Sign of the times.

P.S. Working for food is a time honored tradition born in Texas. Did you ever thought how did the Chicken Whorehouse, the most famouse American Bordello also known as Chicken Ranch,  got it's name?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Ranch_(Texas)

During the Great Depression, Williams was forced to lower the prices she charged. As the Depression lingered, the number of customers dwindled, and Williams had difficulty making ends meet for her employees. She implemented the "poultry standard," charging one chicken for each sexual act. The number of chickens at the brothel exploded, and soon the place became known as the Chicken Ranch. Williams supplemented her income by selling surplus chickens and eggs.

I just heard that the Houston Galleria Costco that is brand new got a pallet of 05 in yesterday...........Does anyone here live in Houston?

PP:
I live in Houston. I visited the Galleria Costco on Friday, and the only 2005 Bordeaux that they had was Laforge (~30 bottles) and Kirkland Margaux (~60 bottles). I didn't buy the Laforge because I already have enough of it.

FYI: A Costco employee (i.e. Daniel) told me that the Galleria Costco is currently the #1 store in the US since it opened and that as soon as he puts most 2005 Bordeaux on the shelves, they are picked up by customers within minutes.

I usually have better luck at the other two Costco locations. FWIW: On Friday, I bought several bottles of Montrose ($114.99) Le Gaffelière ($75.99) and Guiraud ($54.99) at the other two Houston Costcos.

FYI:
As of today, Costco (Bunker Hill) had the following 2005 Bordeaux:
Angelus (1 bottle, $249.99)
Episode 1, M. Roland (12 bottles, $39.99)
Blasson D'issan (~5 cases, $29.99)
Nenin (~3 cases, $64.99)
La Tour Blanche (~3 cases, $49.99)
Coutet (~3 cases, $54.99)

Laforge (~30 bottles)

I forgot to mention the price: $49.99 (not bad for a 95 Pointer from Robert Parker Jr.)

GalvezGuy - how is the general hurricane recovery going in your area?

Every day it gets a little better.  We like to say that we have come further in two months than NO has come in three years.  There is still a lot of cleanup to do.  The canals around my home are full of stairways, walls, etc.  There is a roof (a whole complete house top) across my canal.  I finally got my first insurance advance so I will start building the destroyed areas.  As long as I keep my weekends and evenings dedicated to recovery, I personally should be all the way back by late Jan to early Feb.  I am a little bit ahead of my neighbors, mostly because I can do my own work instead of hiring it out and waiting and because I had available savings to start rebuilding.

There still folks without water and sewer (mostly along the beach) and a few without power (mostly from not working to recover).  As far as the city of Galveston itself, it will take at least two years to finish out infrastructure repairs and refurbish the historical areas.  As I have mentioned before, the folks I really feel for are on Bolivar Peninsula.  They have been mostly forgotten (I will leave my media comments out of this) and are suffering tremendously.  Many will be forced to abandon their property and it will be months before services like power, water, etc. will be available.  I plan on driving there this weekend to help a friend do what can be done to what is left of his property.  If anyone wants to help the folks in this area, the best place to channel your donations is the Salvation Army.  They have done a tremendous job of providing warm meals and other comforts to the citizens of the area.

RR, I really appreciate the thoughts and interest.

According to story in today's L.A. Times, bottles of 2005 Mouton-Rothschild are "languishing" on the shelves at Hi-Times Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa for $549.  Now, I understand how people might generally be buying cheaper wines these days, but this represents a huge markdown!
